Chapter 46
Zhang Qiufeng mentioned the wedding, making Ye Yao focus seriously—she had completely forgotten about it.
Although three days ago, she and Shen Yun had agreed to break off the engagement in six months, they had yet to officially announce the postponement of the wedding.
Now, counting the days, there were only about ten days left before the original wedding date. People in the courtyard were bound to start asking questions.
“Yao Yao, now that everyone’s opinion of us has changed quite a bit, if you really have feelings for Li Cheng…”
“Feelings? What feelings?”
Before Zhang Qiufeng could finish, Ye Yao interrupted her.
Her grandmother was truly amusing—she had been firmly against her marriage to the Li family before, but now she seemed to have changed her mind?
Zhang Qiufeng blushed and coughed.
“Mom, there’s no way Li Cheng and I will be together. Didn’t you say it yourself? We’re from completely different worlds. Even if we lived together, we wouldn’t be happy.
Besides, we all heard Auntie Shen that night. Li Cheng clearly doesn’t like me at all.”
As she spoke, Ye Yao picked up a pear from the basket and took a big bite.
This pear, like the other fruits, was a gift from the neighbors—juicy and sweet.
Watching Ye Yao act so indifferent, Zhang Qiufeng felt uneasy instead.
She had been foolish, thinking that a better reputation might change things, forgetting about the gap between their families—and her daughter’s circumstances.
Maybe her insistence on losing weight was the right decision. Now, she was truly afraid this matter would hurt her.
“Yao Yao, don’t be discouraged. One day, a good man will recognize your worth!”
“Why should I wait for someone else to see my worth? I already know it myself. So sweet.”
Ye Yao took another big bite of the pear, smiling brightly.

“Guoxiong, did you know about this?”
Shen Yun looked at Li Guoxiong, feeling that he was hiding something about the Ye family from her.
Li Guoxiong shook his head, clearly surprised.
“Dongming is the kind of person who, once he decided to take the blame for Zhao Jianshe, wouldn’t have told anyone. Honestly, back then, I had my doubts—he never seemed like the kind of man who would commit a hit-and-run.
But since he turned himself in, I had no choice but to believe it.
Turns out, this was the truth all along.”
By the end, Li Guoxiong sighed heavily.
Seventeen years had passed. Even if the truth had come to light, it couldn’t change anything for him.
Shen Yun could tell from his reaction that he truly hadn’t known.
“Zhao Jianshe, though—what a shock. At least now that the truth is out, Qiufeng’s life in the courtyard should be easier from now on.”
Even if their families couldn’t become in-laws, she still hoped that mother and daughter could live well.
“You’re saying Ye Yao was the one who uncovered all this?”
Li Guoxiong was still surprised by that part.
“Yes. She even fought with Wang Guihua—and Wang Guihua took quite a beating.”
Not just Li Guoxiong, even Shen Yun had found it hard to believe when she first heard it.
Li Guoxiong, however, looked relieved rather than tense, even pleased.
“That child has grown up. She can protect her mother now.”
“Yes, she really has. Also, regarding the wedding postponement, Ye Yao came to me this morning to discuss it. She asked if she could be the one to make the announcement.
Li Cheng, what do you think?”
Shen Yun turned to look at Li Cheng, who was sitting on the other side, holding a newspaper as if he hadn’t been paying attention to their conversation.
At that moment, Li Cheng finally lowered the newspaper, his face blank.
“That’s fine.”
