Chapter 65 – Arriving at the B City Safe Base
Hearing Chu Jiangyue’s words, the skinny old man didn’t even know how to describe his feelings.
At first, their attitude toward her hadn’t been friendly at all.
Yet he never expected her to be so magnanimous, not only bearing no grudge but even giving them such a good thing.
“Is it really true that this can block extreme heat and shield against zombies?”
Unlike the old man’s gratitude, one of the young men beside him raised doubts.
No matter how he looked at it, this thing didn’t seem very reliable.
It was just an ordinary-looking piece of paper—how could it possibly have such amazing functions?
“Believe it or not, it’s up to you.”
Only by using it could they know whether it was good or not. Hearing it from others was nothing compared to experiencing it themselves.
“Then how do we use it?”
Since she had given them the item, surely she wouldn’t leave them clueless about how to use it.
“You can pick one up and try it.”
There were a hundred sheets in total. Using one to test wouldn’t matter.
The young man took one from the stack of flyers in the skinny old man’s arms. The moment he held it in his hand, his eyes suddenly widened and he turned to Chu Jiangyue.
“It’s real!”
The old man and the other young man beside him also felt the change in temperature.
There were no zombies in the neighborhood, so they couldn’t test that function for now—but just being able to ignore the extreme heat was already remarkable.
Their community also had ability users. As long as they didn’t encounter a zombie horde, they wouldn’t be in too much danger.
“Why… why would you give us something this good?”
The young man holding the flyer looked at Chu Jiangyue with a mix of shame and agitation.
“Because I want more people to know about my hotel. Before going there, prepare some valuables or crystal cores. You’ll be in for a surprise.”
“I’ll arrange it as soon as possible!”
This time, the old man’s gaze at Chu Jiangyue carried not only gratitude but also a trace of respect.
To be able to run a hotel in the middle of the apocalypse was proof enough that this woman’s abilities were extraordinary.
Afraid the food would spoil if left too long, the old man ordered the youngsters to carry the supplies, sticking close to the young man holding the flyer. He himself lifted the box of instant noodles, walking beside them as they all left the room where Chu Jiangyue’s group stayed.
Once they were gone, Chu Jiangyue and her companions didn’t linger either. They packed up and left the community.
Before leaving, however, Chu Jiangyue cast one last glance at the vines hanging over the gate of the bathhouse community.
This time, it was Su Zhucheng driving, with Chu Jiangyue once again seated behind the driver’s seat.
Perhaps because people from the base often traveled this road, their journey went rather smoothly.
Even when zombies appeared, there were only one or two. Thanks to the silver SUV’s zombie-shielding function, they didn’t attack.
Still, Shen Zhigui threw a bolt of lightning, blasting the zombies into charred corpses.
Kindly, Chu Jiangyue used her vines to bring the crystal cores back to him, and Su Zhucheng washed them with his ice ability.
If others saw them using their abilities this way, they would probably cry out at the waste.
The car drove all the way to the entrance of the safe passage repaired by the B City Safe Base.
Several base workers at the road greeted Chu Jiangyue and Shen Zhigui’s group politely.
“Boss Chu, Mr. Shen…”
The five of them returned the greeting with a slight nod.
“Are you heading into the base?”
The road crew hadn’t expected to see Chu Jiangyue here.
In their eyes, she had no need to leave Jianglin Hotel at all. Staying there meant food, shelter, and comfort without risk.
If they were her, they’d probably never step out of that hotel again.
“Yes. We’re allowed passage here, right?”
The supply packs she had provided them—once assembled—could immediately be put to use.
How quickly they became fully operational depended only on when the workers finished assembling them.
“Of course, the road is open.”
The road crew smartly stepped aside, clearing the way.
Su Zhucheng pressed the accelerator and drove the SUV into the safe passage.
This time, the road was truly unobstructed.
There weren’t many vehicles coming and going—most of them were from the B City Base, heading toward Jianglin Hotel.
Chu Jiangyue’s group was traveling in the opposite direction, so there was no risk of traffic jams.
Still, even with smooth passage, it took several hours to drive from the entrance to the base itself.
When their car finally stopped at the gates of the B City Safe Base, Chu Jiangyue felt as if she had stepped into another lifetime.
And wasn’t that the truth? She had, in a way, lived another life.
“Get out, I’ll end the navigation.”
With that, Chu Jiangyue was the first to open the door and step out.
“Stop! Entry into the base requires registration.”
Unsurprisingly, they were stopped at the gate.
Each of them was handed a quarter-sheet of A4 paper.
“Please fill in the information. Without a base pass, each person must hand over two jin of rice or equivalent supplies.”
Two jin of rice—in times like these, that was no small amount.
But Chu Jiangyue wasn’t worried. She didn’t have uncooked rice, but she had corn and potatoes.
On the slip of paper, aside from name and gender, the very first question was whether one had awakened an ability.
Chu Jiangyue had never intended to hide her powers. She simply wrote “Wood Ability.”
As for the rest of the questions, she filled them in carelessly.
No one would bother checking, and even if they did, it didn’t matter. The B City Base relied on her hotel for supplies—they wouldn’t dare offend her.
Chu Jiangyue finished first and handed her form to the guard.
“You’re a Wood Ability user?”
The guard’s eyes lit up when he saw what she had written.
She nodded, knowing well why he reacted that way.
The land was polluted, and the base was studying how to grow crops.
Wood users were the backbone of the farming teams.
In her previous life, she had worked in such a team with decent treatment.
That was why Jiang Zhenzhen had set her sights on her, tricking her out of many things.
“The base is recruiting Wood users right now. If you’re interested, I can recommend you.”
If he could bring in a Wood user, he’d surely be rewarded.
And having connections with one might mean getting first dibs on new crops later—another way to make money, with plenty of benefits.
“No need. I live at Jianglin Hotel.”
The man froze. Of course he’d heard of Jianglin Hotel. The base even sent out daily shuttles there, all-inclusive.
He himself had gone once, but his luck was bad—the rooms had been full, so he hadn’t stayed, nor seen the legendary Boss Chu.
Now, hearing that she lived there, his eyes flashed with jealousy.
“I see. In that case, it doesn’t really suit you. There’s still a health check step—go on in.”
