Chapter 6: Ancient Relics Market
Rein opened the study’s door and said, “Old Jonas, I’m here.”
Jonas Evans, who was sketching a complex magic circle on the large table in the study, did not look up.
He would have known who it was even without hearing Rein’s voice.
Because the only person who entered without knocking on his door was Rein.
Rein also knew that his mentor, Jonas, was an enthusiast of magic research and did not disturb him when he looked so focused.
He casually grabbed a stool, sat beside the magic circle Jonas was sketching, and watched him work.
Jonas’s golden hair shone particularly brightly in the sunlight.
Suddenly, Jonas seemed to sense something, stopped sketching the magic circle, turned to stare at Rein, and showed a hint of surprise in his eyes.
Rein was also taken aback by Jonas’s action.
“Old Jonas, what are you staring at me for? Continue sketching the magic circle.”
Jonas dissipated the magic marks in his hand and spoke slowly.
“Lord Fude helped you find a meditation method that matches your talent? You actually advanced to a rank 1 mage.”
There was a slight tone of surprise in Jonas’s voice.
Rein shook his head and offered a quick excuse, since he would never mention the Ancient Tome.
“No, it wasn’t my father who found it; I bought it from a small stall.”
“I only recently discovered that it was a Legacy Stone, and that’s how I obtained the meditation method.”
Jonas nodded and said, “Then you’re really lucky. With a meditation method that suits your talent, your one-in-a-million gift will begin to gradually manifest.”
After speaking, he picked up an exquisite teapot and poured two cups of hot tea.
“Moreover, I can feel the arcane energy in the study subtly converging around you, humming with excitement. Full-attribute magical talent is truly magic’s darling.”
Jonas handed the hot tea to Rein.
Rein reached out to take it; indeed, after mastering the Abyssal Meditation Method, his magical energy slowly increased even without meditation.
Jonas walked to the window, looked at the bustling students below the tower, and couldn’t help asking Rein.
“Is there any activity at the Academy today? It’s so lively.”
Rein sipped his tea and said, “Hmm… it must be because I’m dueling Damon Mick today; otherwise, I really wouldn’t know of any other event in the Academy.”
Upon hearing the name Mick, Jonas seemed to ponder something but then returned to normal.
He was also aware of the matter between Damon and Sophia.
“He did it because of Sophia? And you even agreed? You don’t look worried at all.”
Rein nodded and said, “Something like that, but why should I be worried? He should be the one worried.”
Jonas smiled; he admired Rein’s confidence.
“Very good, confidence is the first ingredient of victory.”
“Now let’s begin the lesson.”
Jonas took a white stone from the cabinet in the study, placed it between them, and began to explain.
“Today I’m going to tell you about the uses and fundamental properties of the ‘Anti-Magic Stone’…”
Just as Rein was listening to Jonas explain the Anti-Magic Stone, most of the students at the Academy already knew about the duel between Rein and Damon scheduled for the next day.
“Have you heard? Rein and Damon are going to duel for Sophia’s sake.”
“I’ve heard that a long time ago; your version is outdated. I heard that Rein and Sophia have been secretly engaged for ages, and her refusal the day before yesterday was just out of shyness.”
“What!? The Ward family’s pure white flower has been picked by Rein too? He’s a jerk; leave some goddess for us.”
Some clever students even set up a betting pool, with odds of 1:15 on Rein versus Damon.
The payout was quite substantial.
After all, most students at the Academy had never seen Rein in action.
They knew nothing of Rein’s combat strength.
They only knew him to be a magic apprentice.
He could not possibly compare to Damon, who had been immersed in the Rank 1 Intermediate Warrior rank for years.
For the entire morning, the Academy was as lively as a festival.
At high noon, Rein emerged from the Mage Tower.
The teaching of magic was not just about listening; it required a lot of personal practice.
In other words, the master could only show the way; cultivation depended on the individual.
Therefore, after Jonas finished teaching him about the Anti-Magic Stone that morning and handed over a few magic manuals he had developed himself, he let Rein leave.
The carriage of House Gray waited at the Academy gate as promised.
Seeing Rein step out of the Academy gate, the coachman quickly set down a stool to help him onto the carriage.
After Rein stepped onto the carriage using the stool, he asked the coachman, Drake.
“Drake, has anything interesting been happening recently in the capital?”
Drake Berry said to Rein as he drove the carriage.
“My lord, nothing particularly exciting lately, but there is an auction at the Anderson Auction House in a week’s time. They say some truly fine items will be up for bid.”
Rein sat in the carriage, crossing his legs in boredom.
Although magic was interesting, studying too much could cause fatigue, and he somewhat missed the days of scrolling through beauty videos on his phone.
Thinking of that, Rein suddenly sat up from the carriage’s backrest.
“Yeah, even though I can’t watch videos, watching them in person should be even better, right?”
“You might even have deeper interactions when things get passionate… slurp.”
Rein wiped away the delightful drool at the corner of his mouth.
But he had other business to attend to this afternoon, so he suppressed his excited thoughts and said to Drake.
“Drake, take me to the Ancient Relics Market; I’m going there to have a look around.”
“Yes, my lord.”
Drake responded with one word and then headed toward the Ancient Relics Market in the west of the capital.
There was no other purpose in going to the Ancient Relics Market.
Rein needed to lay groundwork for the skills, meditation methods, or breathing techniques he would reveal now and in the future.
He needed to legitimize what the Ancient Tome had bestowed upon him.
The Ancient Relics Market was a very good choice for that.
After all, every year people found rare combat skills, magic, or other treasures here.
Moreover, he also had the display prompts from the Ancient Tome.
This would be Rein’s chance to score bargains.
The carriage of House Gray drove into the Ancient Relics Market, instantly causing an uproar.
“Look quickly, it’s the lion sigil… it’s House Gray’s carriage.”
“Yeah, I wonder which big shot from House Gray it is, coming to a commoner area like the Ancient Relics Market.”
“I’m going to volunteer myself. If I could get into House Gray’s favor, my family would never worry about food or drink again.”
“Are you stupid? That’s House Gray’s carriage; it’s highly likely to be that extremely irritable rogue young master. Don’t you know volunteering yourself is a suicide mission?”
“So what if that’s the case? Isn’t there still a chance to get close to him?”
Drake still skillfully produced the small stool to help Rein step up.
As soon as Rein got off the carriage, he saw the crowd gathering around and secretly sighed.
He had meant to arrive in a carriage so that more people would see that Rein had been to the Ancient Relics Market and later could vouch for him.
But it seemed he had underestimated the influence of the House Gray name on commoners.
Even as the rogue Rein, he was still looked upon with longing by the crowd.
Drake shielded Rein behind him, drew the sword at his waist, and shouted at the oncoming commoners.
“What are you all doing? If you’ve offended Young Master Rein, ten lives wouldn’t be enough to make up for it.”
“Where are the market officials? What are they doing? Get out here and maintain order.”
Drake stared intently at every single person.
He feared that if any foreign spy or lawbreaker caused harm to Young Master Rein, he would be held responsible.
Just as Drake finished speaking, the market administrators hurried over and arrived in front of Drake and Rein.
“Young Master Rein, forgive our offense. Upon hearing the news of your arrival, we hurried here without pause.”
Drake glanced back at Rein, saw he didn’t look angry, and spoke to the officials.
“Quickly disperse the crowd. If a foreign spy or assassin truly hurts Young Master Rein, you cannot escape responsibility.”
“Yes, yes.”
The steward immediately nodded and began directing his guards to disperse the crowd.
Fortunately, there were no assassins among the crowd. Otherwise, it would have been quite dangerous for Rein to come out without bodyguards.
