Chapter 30: Yueyue Visits Family
After the spring festival, she was going to marry Luo Yue, so she needed to find an opportunity to meet his family. Since she had more than ten days off for the New Year, she planned to take Luo Yue home to visit his parents.
At the train station, she bought two sleeper tickets from the ticket seller. Being staff at the train station, they had some discounts. When the ticket seller saw Shuxin come to buy tickets, they gladly offered her the best price available.
After thanking the ticket seller, Shuxin returned home with the tickets.
Upon returning to the Liu family, she pulled Luo Yue out of the kitchen and showed him the tickets.
“Train tickets, and it’s to H City? What’s this, Xinxin?”
“Right, just like what you wanted. Since I have time off now, I’m taking you back to H City to visit your family. I’ve already talked to my parents and grandparents, and they’re looking forward to it.”
“Ha ha, thank you, Xinxin! The ticket says we leave tomorrow afternoon; I need to pack my things. Otherwise, I won’t be ready in time.”
Luo Yue happily gave Shuxin a kiss on the cheek, then shyly went back inside to pack for their trip.
With their departure tomorrow, there wasn’t much time left. He had to pack well because they’d be on the train for two or three days, and he wanted to prepare food; last time, he hadn’t prepared properly, making him suffer quite a bit.
Shuxin quickly stopped the hurried Luo Yue entering the kitchen and said, “First, let’s go to the village and get a letter of introduction and a visiting certificate from the brigade leader. When we come back, you can prepare some dry rations in the kitchen.”
Luo Yue understood that as a young educated worker, he needed the brigade leader’s approval to go out, but with Shuxin by his side, he figured it wouldn’t be a problem.
In fact, Luo Yue didn’t feel particularly close to the Luo family. Originally, he was the reincarnation of the son of the Luo family in a matriarchal society. Ever since he left the侯府 (marquis’s residence), he felt he had some insight into human nature and understood the general thoughts of the Luo family members.
Previously, he lived alone and was busy disguise himself to survive, without concern for many things. As long as his life wasn’t in danger, he was too lazy to care. Now that he had Shuxin by his side, with food, drink, and entertainment, he no longer needed to worry about his life, which allowed him to think about how to get along with the Luo family.
His happiness in going back wasn’t just to see the Luo family; it was mainly to visit Grandpa Luo and Grandma Luo, to sweep their graves, and tell them he had found a wife, assuring them not to worry about him anymore.
During his time in the countryside, Mr. and Mrs. Luo said they left the next month’s living expenses for the family and took everything else to support Luo Yue.
In reality, they only gave him a little over thirty yuan, while they kept eighty or ninety yuan for themselves, justifying it by saying there were many mouths to feed at home and fearing there wouldn’t be enough if they left less.
They had promised to send him five yuan each month after he went to the countryside, but he hadn’t seen any of that. When he arrived at Liulin Brigade, after adding the inheritance from Grandpa and Grandma Luo, he only had a little over a hundred yuan.
Grandpa and Grandma Luo were retired workers from a textile factory, with some savings. However, little Luo Yue was sickly as a child and frequently visited hospitals, so most of their savings went towards his medical expenses, leaving very little for Luo Yue.
After coming to this matriarchal society as Luo Yue, he wasn’t a frugal person. He had also borrowed quite a bit of money from the Luo family.
It is easier to go from frugality to extravagance than from extravagance to frugality; coming from a marquis’s son, it was unrealistic to expect him to be frugal. Not having completely squandered all he had and still having over a hundred yuan was considered acceptable.
When he had just been reincarnated, Luo Yue wasn’t very familiar with the prices in this world and didn’t realize that compared to other impoverished families, he was well-off.
However, compared to other wealthy families, the money Luo Yue had was like a small fish seeing a big whale.
During his time with the Luo family, the couple only ensured he had enough to eat; other luxuries like meat and sweets were not for him.
Luo Yue’s older brothers were both valued for their jobs, while his younger sister, being the only daughter, was showered with affection by their parents.
As for him, having grown up away from his family and being frail, the Luo couple invested very little time and resources in him.
When he was young, Luo Yue was born prematurely and was weak. The doctors predicted he wouldn’t live past his teenage years, so the Luo couple had long excluded him from their plans for the family.
Who would have thought he was so resilient? Grandpa and Grandma Luo took good care of him, and he managed to survive and even reach adulthood.
Usually, when parents see their sickly child growing up, they would pull him close, but that was not the case with the Luo couple.
Every time they thought of their third son’s frail condition, the monthly medical expenses seemed like a heavy burden, so they acted as if they were unaware of it and never initiated bringing him home. Grandpa and Grandma Luo had to bring it up, and even then, they found excuses to decline.
Later, after Grandpa and Grandma Luo passed away, they felt pressured by the outside world to bring him back into the Luo family. They explained it as worry for his health, not letting him work, but in reality, it was their reluctance to spend money on Luo Yue.
When Luo Yue’s older brothers turned 16, the couple helped them find jobs in a factory, while Luo Yue, at 20 years old, was still left at home, sometimes facing the couple’s dissatisfaction, which they would express indirectly by saying he was just eating their food for free.
Upon recalling this, Luo Yue felt a heaviness in his heart. Before, he couldn’t stand firm, always under the watchful eyes of the Luo family, fearing that any significant change in him would give away his true self to them and the neighbors.
Now that his household registration had moved to Liulin Brigade, he no longer needed to worry about the Luo family discovering his true nature.
He was resolved to settle the score with them and confront them decisively.
You might ask what he spent during his time with the Luo family? That was money left by Grandpa and Grandma Luo. Originally, their house was meant for Luo Yue.
At that time, the Luo family claimed they didn’t have enough space, and they persuaded little Luo Yue to agree to let his older brother’s family live in the house.
After Luo Yue arrived, he kept a close eye and never agreed to transfer ownership. The Luo family members did not anticipate that Luo Yue would later create trouble for them; they thought the house was theirs and did not disturb him.
The years they lived there effectively offset the living expenses he incurred while with the Luo family. After all, he had mainly spent money on food, and he hadn’t seen any of the other things he was entitled to.
After getting off the train, Luo Yue looked at H City with mixed feelings. He hadn’t expected to return so soon after only being gone for half a year.
Seeing Luo Yue’s expression, Shuxin felt that he didn’t seem excited about visiting family. However, since they were at the station with people coming and going, she couldn’t ask him directly and had to keep it to herself.
Shuxin took Luo Yue to a guesthouse and booked two adjacent rooms. After Shuxin was done arranging her things, she knocked on Luo Yue’s door.
“Yueyue, do you have a bad relationship with your family? You didn’t seem very happy just now. You seemed quite cheerful in the village.”
Upon hearing Shuxin’s question, Luo Yue didn’t hide anything and shared the details of his upbringing with her.
