The maidservants carried in basins of water for everyone to cleanse their hands. After that, they quietly served the soup. The madams chatted and laughed, while the young ladies were attended to as they ate. After the meal, everyone moved to the side hall for tea.
Once the tea was finished, they proceeded to a warmly enclosed pavilion set up in the courtyard. Several long couches had already been arranged inside, with trays of fruits and pastries placed on the tables before them. The guests sat in order of seniority, with the young ladies gathering around the madams.
Old Madam Li handed a playbill to Grand Madam Ning with a smile and said, “I find all the plays delightful. I’d like to ask you to help me make a choice.”
The most respected among them, Grand Madam Ning, modestly declined a few times before finally accepting the playbill. After flipping through it briefly, she turned to Madam Shen beside her and asked, “Are there any particularly good plays recently?”
Madam Shen glanced at the gold-embossed playbill in Grand Madam Ning’s hand and smiled. “Mother, there is indeed a fine play titled ‘The Orphan of Zhao’. However, today is a joyous occasion, and this play carries a rather sorrowful tone……”
The opera house owner, who had been kneeling respectfully to the side, quickly explained, “Please rest assured, madams. This play was indeed quite tragic at first, but when it was introduced into the palace, the empress dowager disapproved of the ending and personally had it revised. Now, it concludes on a joyous note!”
“Oh? Even the empress dowager has watched this play? Then let’s have it performed. There’s nothing to worry about.” Old Madam Li said with a smile.
Ouyang Nuan maintained a gentle and harmonious smile, but she understood all too well that Old Madam Li was someone who reveled in grandiosity. She had always been superstitious about bad omens, yet upon hearing that the empress dowager had watched this play, she immediately wanted to see it, as if doing so would elevate her own status.
A single strike of the gong signaled the start of the performance, and all attention turned to the stage. The story took place in the previous dynasty and followed the Zhao family, a clan that had risen through military achievements. Their growing prestige, however, aroused the jealousy of General Tu Anjia, who falsely accused them of treason. As a result, the Zhao family’s entire household of three hundred people was massacred, leaving only a single orphan behind.
By the time the play reached the third scene, where the nursemaid entrusted the orphan to a physician named Cheng Ying— a frequent visitor to the Zhao residence— the audience was utterly captivated. At that moment, as the nursemaid sang, “Raise the orphan of Zhao to adulthood, and avenge his parents!”, a maid suddenly stepped forward and reported, “Old Madam, the madam has arrived.”
The hall fell silent for a brief moment before Ouyang Nuan was the first to stand. Smiling, she said, “Grandmother, I’ll go greet Mother.”
Old Madam Li’s expression was indifferent as she nodded and said, “Since she’s unwell, she should be resting properly. Why bother coming out in the cold?”
Ouyang Nuan responded with a faint smile as she watched Nanny Wang and Lixiang accompany Lin Wanru inside. Under the gaze of so many, Lin Wanru’s smile was warm and sincere.
Old Madam Li remained seated, only speaking after Lin Wanru had completed her bow. “If you need anything, just send someone to inform me. There’s no need for such trouble. You are carrying a child. If anything were to happen from all this exertion, what then?”
Before anyone else could speak, Madam Jiang chimed in, “Indeed, Wanru, just see how much Old Madam cares for you. She is absolutely right. You must take good care of yourself.”
Lin Wanru responded with a slight bow and a smile. “Today is Mother’s birthday, and all the madams are here. How could I not come to pay my respects?”
Saying that, she moved to Grand Madam Ning’s side and solemnly performed another bow. The grand madam smiled faintly, a sharp glint flashing in her eyes as she said, “We’re all family. No need for such formalities.”
“Yes, Mother, you should focus on resting and taking care of yourself.” Ouyang Nuan said gently. Lin Wanru smiled and patted her hand, their mother-daughter affection appearing close and warm in the eyes of outsiders. Though in reality, they were as incompatible as fire and water.
Lin Wanru took a seat and Ouyang Nuan personally poured her some tea. “Mother, the play is at its most exciting part. You arrived just in time.”
The opera’s melody was high-pitched and powerful, the drumbeats resounding forcefully. Suddenly, the gongs and drums stopped abruptly, and the orphan of Zhao swore before his family’s memorial tablets, his voice filled with rage, “He slaughtered my entire clan; I will repay him by exterminating his nine generations!”
Lin Wanru’s heart jolted violently. As she regained her composure, she found Ouyang Nuan smiling at her, causing an involuntary chill to run down her spine and a cold sweat broke out on her back.
As the third act concluded, Old Madam Li ordered rewards to be given to the performers. At that moment, Ouyang Nuan noticed that Lin Wanru kept glancing toward the entrance with a hint of anxiety in her eyes. She pondered for a moment. Since becoming pregnant, Lin Wanru had been holding her breath, determined to give birth to a son and regain her status. Yet, Ouyang Nuan had disrupted all her plans, leaving her in an awkward position. Knowing Lin Wanru’s temperament, she would never resign herself to such a fate. It was likely that she would make a move today…… But what exactly was she planning?
As the performers were still taking their bows, a young maid ran in and stood hesitantly outside the pavilion, not daring to enter. Nanny Wang noticed and discreetly approached the girl, whispering a few words before quickly returning to Lin Wanru’s side and murmuring something into her ear. At last, Lin Wanru’s face lit up with a trace of a smile.
Standing up, Lin Wanru loudly announced to Old Madam Li, “Mother, Madam Su has just arrived in the capital. Upon hearing about your birthday banquet, she wishes to come and pay her respects!”
At the mention of ‘Madam Su’, Ouyang Nuan’s smile remained unchanged, but waves of shock surged in her heart.
The Su family— famed for its immense wealth, with vast businesses in traditional medicine, silk, and tea— was known as the wealthiest household in Jiangnan. However, no one knew the Su family better than Ouyang Nuan, for in her past life, she had been utterly ruined by them!
She had never expected that on Old Madam Li’s birthday, Madam Su who was supposed to be far away in Jiangnan would suddenly appear. No wonder Lin Wanru had been so restless earlier. She had been waiting for this moment!
Madam Su had been close friends with Lin Wanru since their youth, a fact even Old Madam Li was aware of. However, as the Su family had always remained in Jiangnan, Old Madam Li found their sudden visit to the capital puzzling. Still, she concealed her thoughts, smiling as she said, “Then let us welcome Madam Su.”
Ouyang Nuan watched as a group of seven or eight maids surrounded the dazzlingly adorned and beautiful Madam Su as she entered. Her own smile remained gentle and composed, betraying not a single trace of emotion— yet deep within her eyes, there was a chilling coldness, as if it had come straight from the depths of hell……
Come, then. What is destined to come will always arrive. Everything had already been pushed forward by two years compared to her past life. It seemed that Lin Wanru had been forced into a corner and could no longer wait.
Madam Su walked gracefully across the grand red brocade carpet and bowed elegantly to Old Madam Li. Beside her stood a young girl dressed in red. Upon seeing these two familiar faces again, Ouyang Nuan’s lips curled into a faintly mocking smile.
Madam Su was an outstanding beauty, with a sharp glint in her eyes. She carried herself with radiant poise, exuding an air of elegance and grandeur. After greeting everyone in turn, she sat down beside Lin Wanru and pointed at Ouyang Nuan, who stood near Old Madam Li, before asking with a smile, “Who is this young lady?”
Lin Wanru smiled and replied, “This is Nuan’er, the one I’ve mentioned to you several times before, our family’s eldest daughter.”
Madam Su examined Ouyang Nuan closely, and a trace of surprise flickered in her eyes. She smiled and said, “What a remarkably beautiful girl! I came in such a hurry today that didn’t prepare a proper gift for our first meeting, but here, take this.” As she spoke, she pulled out a heavy red embroidered pouch with golden thread from her sleeve and handed it to Ouyang Nuan.
Ouyang Ke, who had been observing the situation, did not wait for Lin Wanru to speak. She immediately stepped forward with a respectful and obedient demeanor, bowing sweetly. “Madam Su, I wish you well.”
Madam Su glanced at her and smiled, while Lin Wanru’s expression also softened with satisfaction. She then introduced her daughter, “This is Ke’er.”
Madam Su nodded without saying much. Instead, she removed two gold bracelets inlaid with pearls from her wrist and gently slipped them onto Ouyang Ke’s hands. Smiling, she said, “Good child, take these.”
Ouyang Ke lowered her eyes to look at the bracelets, then glanced at the embroidered pouch in Ouyang Nuan’s hands. The dazzling pearls and gemstones adorning the pouch made it exceptionally luxurious and eye-catching. Even without seeing what was inside, Ouyang Ke knew it was worth a fortune. Her eyes widened, and she couldn’t help but feel a surge of jealousy.
Ouyang Nuan remained completely unmoved. Since Madam Su had set her sights on her, it was only natural for the other party to present a generous gift. In her past life, she had foolishly believed that the older woman was kind-hearted, never suspecting that everything had been carefully orchestrated! She performed a slight bow before turning to return to Old Madam Li’s side. However, Madam Su held onto her hand, gently stroking her face, her eyes filled with admiration. “This child is truly beautiful and so well-mannered. She is nothing like my unruly daughter, who runs around all day like a wild horse without reins.”
Ouyang Nuan sneered inwardly but maintained a gentle and obedient expression on her face. Meanwhile, the exquisitely delicate girl who had accompanied Madam Su smiled playfully, her brows arched. “Mother, you’re so biased! When have I ever been mischievous? You’ll make Sister Nuan laugh at me!”
Of course, Ouyang Nuan recognized this girl. It was Su Yunniang, Madam Su’s youngest daughter and the sister of Su Yulou. Back then, when she and Su Yulou were entangled, Su Yunniang had eagerly played matchmaker, putting in considerable ‘effort.’ Later, when Ouyang Nuan was thrown into the river to drown, this seemingly innocent girl had already married but still rushed back overnight to witness the spectacle. The Su family was truly a pack of hypocrites with kind faces and ruthless hearts!
Without betraying her thoughts, Ouyang Nuan smiled warmly. “And who might this younger sister be?”
“This is Yunniang. You two should get to know each other.” Madam Su said.
Su Yunniang approached with a bright smile, taking Ouyang Nuan’s hand and lowering her voice, “Sister Nuan, I’ve long admired you. From now on, we can spend more time together.”
As Su Yunniang grasped her hand, Ouyang Nuan caught the overwhelming fragrance that clung to the girl’s sleeves. She took in the dazzling jewels adorning the other person, shining brilliantly with every movement, and felt nothing but cold amusement. The people from Marquis Zhengou Manor remained composed, their expressions unreadable. However, the wives and daughters of the Ministry of Personnel officials could not hide their sneers. The Su family might wield power in Jiangnan, but in the capital, among the nobility, they were nothing more than wealthy upstarts, looked down upon by the true aristocrats. And yet, Su Yunniang had dressed so ostentatiously, as if desperate for others to notice her.
Once the greetings were complete, everyone took their seats. Su Yunniang repeatedly tried to pull Ouyang Nuan to sit with her, but Ouyang Nuan politely declined, choosing instead to sit among the noble ladies of Marquis Zhengou Manor. Su Yunniang then attempted to join the daughters of other officials, but they subtly pushed her away. Never had she imagined that it would be so difficult to integrate into the noblewomen’s circles of the capital. Her face reddened with frustration as she clenched her fists, yet in the end, she had no choice but to return to her mother’s side.
Madam Su noticed her daughter’s reddened eyes but pretended not to see, turning instead to Lin Wanru with a smile. “Since my marriage, I have not returned to the capital for many years. Jiangnan is wonderful, but it will never be my homeland. There has never been a moment when I did not long to visit the capital again. Last year, my eldest brother-in-law persuaded my husband that although we have wealth, we must not abandon official aspirations. So this time, we have brought the entire family to the capital, intending for Yulou to study diligently.”
Lin Wanru chuckled. “That’s quite right. You should have returned long ago. There’s no need to be formal with us. I have instructed the servants to clear out three halls in the front courtyard. You can stay there. Although my household may not be as wealthy as yours, I can still afford to be a proper host.”
As Ouyang Nuan attentively watched the opera performance, she overheard the conversation due to her proximity. The corners of her lips curled slightly. Lin Wanru was bold indeed. Since when did she have the authority to make such decisions in Ouyang Manor? How dare she make such an offer without consulting the old madam? Did she think the old madam did not exist? Sure enough, with a sideways glance, Ouyang Nuan saw Old Madam Li’s face darken, the old woman’s eyes glinting with an icy sharpness.
Madam Su smiled. “It’s not that simple. Including maids, nannies, and manservants, we have nearly seventy or eighty people. I fear that ordinary accommodations won’t suffice. Instead, I must trouble my husband to purchase us a residence. The cost does not matter as long as it is comfortable.”
Then, turning to Old Madam Li, Madam Su added with a smile, “Old Madam, don’t you agree? We aren’t just here for a brief visit. Perhaps we will settle down permanently.”
Old Madam Li’s smile remained indifferent as she replied, “Madam Su speaks truly. The capital is indeed a wonderful place. I fear that once you settle in, you won’t want to leave.”
Grand Madam Ning chuckled and said to Old Madam Li, “I believe Madam Su is planning exactly that— to establish a home in the capital.”
The other ladies exchanged amused glances, covering their mouths as they laughed.
The capital’s land was as valuable as gold and purchasing property there was not merely a matter of wealth— it required power. Even with power, one still needed deep ancestral roots in the city. For a merchant family like the Su’s, buying an estate in the capital was nothing more than a fool’s dream.
Though Madam Su knew they were mocking her, she remained composed, her face betraying no anger. Instead, she smiled and said, “You’re right. I was being naïve. Buying a residence is not urgent. We’ll simply rent one for now.”
At that moment, Su Yunniang leaned close to her mother and whispered a few words.
“Yulou wishes to pay his respects?” Madam Su feigned surprise. “Isn’t he in the front courtyard?”
For Old Madam Li’s birthday banquet, all male guests had been gathered in the front courtyard, including the young men of Marquis Zhengou Manor. And yet, Su Yulou wanted to come there? Lin Wanru’s intentions could not have been more obvious.
Ouyang Nuan inwardly sighed. How foolish she had been in her past life, falling so easily into their trap and allowing herself to be used and betrayed!
“This is rather improper.” Madam Su said hesitantly. “This hall is full of women.”
“Let him in.” Lin Wanru interjected with a smile, turning to Old Madam Li. “Young Master Su has traveled a long way and simply wishes to pay his respects.”
A thousand thoughts flashed through Ouyang Nuan’s mind as she observed the situation.
Old Madam Li chuckled, though dissatisfaction flickered in her eyes. “Very well, let the boy come in.”
The others followed suit with polite smiles, but only Grand Madam Ning’s eyes flashed with sharpness.
Ouyang Nuan exhaled softly. Grand Madam Ning had surely seen through Lin Wanru’s schemes long ago. She smiled faintly and said, “Grandmother, there are no outsiders here, so it shouldn’t matter. However, the young ladies from Marquis Zhengou Manor and the minister of personnel’s family are all of age, and since Young Master Su is an outsider……”
Old Madam Li nodded. “That is true.” She then turned to Nanny Zhang and said, “Take the young ladies behind the screen.”
Lin Wanru’s expression turned anxious, but Madam Su reached out, patted her hand soothingly, and calmed her down. Ouyang Nuan smiled to herself. It seemed Madam Su had more patience than her stepmother.
Behind the screen was a rest area. As they took their seats, the servant’s voice rang out from outside, “Young Master Su has arrived!”
Ouyang Ke happened to be sitting by the screen. She leaned in to peer through the gap. The other young ladies sat silently, holding their breath, but only Ouyang Nuan wore a gentle smile on her face— though deep in her eyes, an indescribable chill lingered.
A voice, warm like a spring breeze, drifted through the screen and struck straight at the heart, “Greetings to all the elders!”
That voice was as soft and refined as ever, stirring the soul. But a surge of resentment suddenly welled up in Ouyang Nuan’s heart, sharp and piercing to the bone……
However, she did not cry. The tears she had once shed for him had long dried up and rusted away. She would never shed another tear for him again. Let the past forever remain in the past. Those days of happiness she had once cherished so deeply were gone, never to return. No, it had all been nothing more than an elaborate act— a performance that had enchanted and consumed her, dragging her into an abyss with no escape.
His tenderness had once trapped her in an intoxicating haze, making her unable to extricate herself. Yet, that very tenderness had eventually turned into a cruel and icy blade, leaving her covered in wounds. The deeper she had once loved, the deeper the hatred in death— hatred so consuming, she wished she could tear the heavens and the earth apart!
Su Yulou, Su Yulou…… Su Yulou. Do you know how much I wish to tear your flesh and drink your blood? And yet, you still dare to walk right into my hands? Good, good, good…… this is truly wonderful!
Everyone outside was drawn to that gentle voice, so no one noticed the icy coldness in Ouyang Nuan’s eyes— like a deep, frozen abyss and an ancient glacier untouched for a thousand years.
Ouyang Ke rarely saw outsiders. At this moment, she pressed close to the screen, peering through the gap. Through the narrow slit, she saw a strikingly handsome young man walking in with measured grace. He wore a dark red robe adorned with flowing cloud and bat patterns, its edges trimmed with dark golden velvet. Over it, he draped a snow-white fox fur cloak. His starry eyes were mesmerizing, his brows carried a hint of affection, and his lips were as red as cinnabar. His bearing was elegant and his spirit was dazzling. There was no other way to describe him but as a man of extraordinary charm, unrestrained yet refined. The moment Ouyang Ke laid eyes on his striking features, she froze completely, as if an invisible force had immobilized her.
“Rise.” Old Madam Li spoke with warmth. “Young Master Su has traveled a long way. As an honored guest, he must join us in the front hall for a few more cups of wine.”
Su Yulou’s voice was calm and unhurried, carrying an unmistakable steadiness, “Yes, many thanks for the old madam’s kindness. I heard the madams were gathered here today, so I came to pay my respects.”
His appearance caused a stir among the assembled ladies. No one had expected the Su family to have such a strikingly handsome young master. Ouyang Nuan slowly lowered her gaze, concealing the cold glint in her eyes. Su Yulou’s beautiful features remained vivid in her memory. But who would have thought that behind such charm lay calculated intentions and a heart full of ambition?
While pleasantries were exchanged outside, the young ladies inside the room could hardly sit still.
The lively Third Miss Liao, with her bright, expressive eyes and a touch of adorable innocence, was the first to break the silence. Unable to contain her curiosity, she asked, “Ke’er, what does Young Master Su look like?”
Ouyang Ke was still staring blankly outside, lost in thought. Ouyang Nuan, with a gentle smile, lifted a teapot from the red clay stove and personally poured a cup of tea for Third Miss Liao, softly saying, “Please, have some tea.”
Third Miss Liao suddenly realized her impropriety. Asking such a question in front of everyone was highly inappropriate for a young lady of the rear courtyard. Her face instantly turned crimson with embarrassment.
Dressed in a six-paneled, multicolored skirt and radiating dazzling beauty, Young Miss Ke, from the family of the Ministry of Personnel’s clerk, chuckled playfully. “We’re all among friends here, no need to be so reserved. I heard that this Young Master Su is famed as the most handsome man in Jiangnan!”
“Yes, yes!” A chorus of excited murmurs erupted among the young ladies.
Young Miss He, the daughter of the senior assistant of the Ministry of Personnel, sat holding a small hand warmer. With a smile, she mused, “A handsome man? There is no shortage of them in the capital. But the most famous of all is none other than Prince Ming. It’s a pity he rarely shows himself. Otherwise, wouldn’t he have already stolen the hearts of every woman in the city?”
“Has Young Miss He ever seen Prince Ming?” A young lady, whose name Ouyang Nuan couldn’t recall, asked curiously.
“Once, from afar, during a sacrificial ceremony that year. But I couldn’t see him clearly……” Young Miss He’s eyes took on a dreamy, faraway look, as if recalling a cherished memory. Her cheeks turned a delicate shade of pink before she let out a soft, wistful sigh, unable to help herself.
“Alas, no matter how exceptional Prince Ming is, his marriage must be granted by His Majesty. Daughters from ordinary families could never hope to reach such heights. Young Miss He, you’d best not indulge in wishful thinking.” Lin Yuanrou said with a faint smile, her eyes carrying an indescribable mockery.
“Nonsense!” Young Miss He nearly jumped to her feet, but Ouyang Nuan gently cut her off with a single remark, “Ladies, this screen is quite thin. If those outside overhear……”
Everyone was momentarily stunned and immediately fell silent.
At some point, Su Yulou had already left. Ouyang Ke sat back down, and Young Miss Ke beside her, unconcerned, directly asked, “Have you seen this Young Master Su? How does he look?”
The young ladies all pricked up their ears. Ouyang Ke, still somewhat dazed, thought for a moment before replying, “Exquisite.”
“In what way?” Young Miss Ke pressed further.
Ouyang Ke shook her head, smiling lightly. “Impossible to describe or capture in paint.”
No matter how the others pestered her, she refused to elaborate.
After Su Yulou had left, the young ladies gradually returned to their seats to continue watching the opera. However, Ouyang Ke had lost interest. At that moment, Lin Wanru suddenly suggested, “Since we are enjoying the opera here, we shouldn’t keep the young ones constrained. Let them take a stroll in the garden.”
No one immediately responded, especially not Ouyang Nuan, who remained elegantly seated, smiling faintly without any intention of leaving. Lin Wanru grew anxious and signaled to Ouyang Ke with her eyes.
Ouyang Ke simply stood up and coquettishly said to Old Madam Li, “Grandmother, I don’t want to listen to the opera. I want to go play in the garden.”
Old Madam Li chuckled. “Go on, then. Don’t sit here with us any longer. I know you young ones can’t sit still and have no patience for these drawn-out performances.”
Everyone laughed. Lin Yuanrou also stood up with a bright smile. “Grandmother, I’d like to go as well!”
Following her lead, most of the young ladies stood up one after another, expressing their desire to join.
Grand Madam Ning nodded and turned to Ouyang Nuan. “Nuan’er, will you go with them?”
However, Ouyang Nuan merely smiled and replied, “Grandmother, I really want to know whether Young Master Zhao will avenge his family! I’ll stay and watch the opera with you all.” Her tone carried a longing anticipation.
Lin Wanru’s expression subtly changed, and her gaze toward Ouyang Nuan flickered with uncertainty.
Ouyang Ke curled her lips into a smile, stepped forward, and took Ouyang Nuan’s arm. She playfully said to Grand Madam Ning, “Grandmother, Sister is reluctant to leave your side. She doesn’t really enjoy operas! Please be kind and grant her permission to accompany us!”
Lin Yuanrou quickly chimed in, “Yes, yes! Let Nuan’er come with us. We’re unfamiliar with the garden, and it would be troublesome if we got lost.”
“In that case, Nuan’er, go along with the young ladies for a walk and take good care of them.” Old Madam Li said with a nod.
Ouyang Nuan looked at Ouyang Ke with a half-smile, her expression unreadable. Under that gaze, Ouyang Ke felt a tingling discomfort at the back of her head. As soon as they stepped out of the madams’ sight, she instinctively let go of Ouyang Nuan’s arm.
Upon arriving at the garden, Ouyang Ke suggested they sit in the pavilion for a while. The other young ladies followed her lead, except for Lin Yuanxin, who held onto Ouyang Nuan’s sleeve and whispered, “Ouyang Ke is quite strange. You should keep an eye on her.”
That warning was absolutely sincere. Ouyang Nuan glanced at Lin Yuanxin with a faint smile. “Sister Xin, don’t worry. I won’t let our grandmother be concerned about me.” No matter what the other side’s intentions were, she would make sure they ended up empty-handed.
The octagonal pavilion of Ouyang Manor was built atop an artificial hill. The young ladies ascended the steps and took their seats. Fruits and pastries had already been prepared, and the view from the pavilion offered a clear sight of the entire garden, making the setting rather enjoyable. Just as they were about to settle in, a commotion erupted nearby, and cheers and laughter filled the air.
Young Miss He suddenly exclaimed, “Look!”
On the western side of the garden, banquet tables had been set up. Young noblemen sat at their leisure, wine filling their cups, their conversations brimming with mirth. The sight startled the young ladies, leaving them somewhat flustered. Ouyang Nuan cast a calm glance in that direction and smiled. “Young Miss He, there’s no need for surprise. My father arranged an additional banquet in the garden to entertain the guests. We are in the pavilion, with maids guarding below. No outsiders can enter easily.”
Hearing that, the young ladies felt slightly reassured and turned their gazes toward the scene. About a hundred paces from the banquet tables stood a solitary stone shield. Two young servants stood on either side, ready to serve. Behind the young noblemen, maidservants held bows in their hands, their expressions poised. Ouyang Nuan’s eyes swept across the gathering and soon spotted Ouyang Jue among them. A slight smile appeared on her lips. Whenever noble sons gathered, they enjoyed holding small archery contests. But Ouyang Jue was still a child, could he even pull a bow?
Seated at the banquet were not only Ouyang Jue but also Lin Zhiran, the eldest di son of Marquis Zhenguo; Lin Zhiyu, the son of the minister of war; and Liao Hefeng, the son of the minister of personnel. The last to arrive was Su Yulou.
Su Yulou casually glanced toward the pavilion. Though he couldn’t distinguish which young lady was Ouyang Nuan, he knew she was among them. To him, winning a young lady’s heart was an effortless task. Since his mother had repeatedly urged him to ensnare the eldest daughter of the Ouyang family, he intended to proceed without restraint.
At that moment, Liao Hefeng released an arrow, striking the lion’s head target. Applause broke out among the onlookers. Su Yulou, lips curved in a smile, stood up leisurely, took a bow from the maid behind him, pulled the string to test the tension, and then smiled with ease. With a sharp whoosh, the arrow flew straight toward the lion-shaped shield, piercing through the wooden target with a resounding crack. It struck the lion’s nose dead center!
Gasps filled the pavilion as the young ladies marveled in disbelief. None had expected the young master of the Su family to possess such exceptional archery skills. Their eyes unconsciously fixed on him, and among them, Ouyang Ke was especially enthralled. Originally, Lin Wanru had instructed her to bring Ouyang Nuan there so that she could witness Su Yulou’s charm firsthand, creating an opportunity for them to meet. Yet at this moment, Ouyang Ke had completely forgotten Lin Wanru’s instructions, as her attention was entirely captivated by Su Yulou.
Meanwhile, Ouyang Nuan was quietly conversing with Lin Yuanxin and hadn’t spared Su Yulou a single glance. Just then, Lin Yuanrou interjected, “Nuan’er, look, Jue’er is going up next!”
Ouyang Nuan immediately looked toward the field and saw that, indeed, Ouyang Jue was holding a bow, using all his strength to draw the string. She slowly stood up and instinctively stepped closer. This bow was clearly too much for a child to handle. Ouyang Jue shouldn’t force himself……
Before she could think more, Ouyang Jue had already released the arrow. The young servant guarding the shield let out a sharp cry and darted aside in a panic. The arrow completely missed the target. Let alone the lion’s nose, if the servant hadn’t dodged in time, he might have been injured on the spot! The noblemen erupted into unrestrained laughter, their ridicule blatant. Ouyang Jue’s face flushed red. He was only ten years old and had never handled a bow before. This was merely an attempt. He hadn’t expected to be mocked so mercilessly!
“Sister, I didn’t expect Jue’er to be so terrible at archery!” Ouyang Ke covered her mouth, giggling.
Ouyang Nuan, however, simply smiled and said, “Jue’er is still a child. His strength is limited. The fact that he could even draw the bowstring on his first attempt is already impressive.” She only hoped he wouldn’t feel disheartened by this humiliation.
At that moment, a young man stepped forward. He took the bow from Ouyang Jue’s hands, smiled faintly, and said, “Jue’er, let me give it a try.”
“That’s my brother!” Lin Yuanxin’s sharp eyes immediately recognized the other party, her face lighting up with surprise. Lin Zhiran? Ouyang Nuan couldn’t help but be astonished. The eldest son of her uncle, Lin Zhiran, had always been proud and aloof, never particularly close to her and her younger brother. Why was he stepping forward to help Ouyang Jue now?
Su Yulou strolled up beside him, his lips curved in a faint smile. “Eldest Young Master Lin, are you interested in archery as well?”
Lin Zhiran met his gaze and returned a slow smile. “I know a little. But when I’m interested in something, I make sure to win.”
Su Yulou’s smile faded slightly. “I am the same. When I want to win, I never lose. Are you certain you’ll take the championship today?”
Lin Zhiran smiled coolly. “Then let’s see what we’re both capable of.”
“Very well, since that’s the case, let the two of us compete.” Su Yulou said slowly. He extended his arm outward, and someone behind him handed him a bow. He swiftly nocked an arrow and shot it. The moment the arrow left the bowstring, he had already reached behind him for another, nocking and releasing it in one seamless motion. His movements were as fast as lightning, clean and effortless, as if it had all happened in the blink of an eye. Before anyone could even react, the two arrows raced toward the lion shield, landing almost simultaneously— one on the left and one on the right— both striking the lion’s nose dead center!
The young noblemen were momentarily stunned before erupting into enthusiastic applause. In Dali, both scholarly and martial arts skills were highly valued, and noble sons were expected to be proficient in archery and horseback riding as well as literature. Su Yulou, with his strikingly handsome features and merchant family background, had been dismissed by many as nothing more than an embroidered pillow[1]one who is outwardly attractive but lacking ability or talent inside. No one had expected that he possessed such astonishing archery skills, able to hit a target with such precision from a hundred paces away. A rare man indeed!
Even the young ladies in the pavilion stood up one after another to watch, their faces unconsciously showing admiration. At that moment, all eyes were fixed on Su Yulou.
Only Ouyang Nuan remained seated in the pavilion, leisurely pouring herself a cup of tea. Now that Ouyang Jue had taken his shot, she no longer cared about the competition. In contrast, Lin Yuanxin clutched her handkerchief nervously. Ouyang Nuan glanced at her and smiled faintly. “Sister Xin, are you worried?”
Worried? Of course, she was! No matter how impressive Su Yulou was, he was still of merchant descent. Her elder brother, Lin Zhiran, was the eldest young master of Marquis Zhengou Manor, far superior in status. If he were to lose to Su Yulou in front of everyone, wouldn’t he become the laughingstock of the entire capital?
“There’s no need to be nervous, Sister Xin.” Ouyang Nuan said with a reassuring smile. “You know Brother Ran’s personality better than I do. He would never engage in a battle he wasn’t certain of winning.” Despite her words, she wasn’t entirely confident. She knew Su Yulou well, and he was indeed both talented and skilled, not just an empty show. But Lin Zhiran…… she hardly understood him at all.
Ouyang Jue walked up hesitantly, tilting his head to look up at Lin Zhiran, who towered over him. With some concern, he said, “Brother Ran, maybe we should just let it go……”
Lin Zhiran gave a faint smile, his sharp phoenix eyes narrowing slightly. As he took the bow, his expression became incomparably steady, his lips pressed into a firm line. Every muscle in his body tensed, and in that instant, the refined and elegant young nobleman seemed to transform completely. A chilling aura radiated from him, as if even the sunlight had lost its warmth.
In the pavilion, the young ladies held their breath, watching intently. The lively scene gradually quieted, falling into utter silence. Everyone’s gaze was fixed on Lin Zhiran. They had a strange feeling that this was going to be a truly extraordinary duel.
Suddenly, the cold gleam of an arrowhead flashed, and with a sharp whoosh, the arrow shot out at lightning speed. Before anyone could react, Lin Zhiran fired another arrow in rapid succession, following the first with a swiftness that left no time for the eye to catch up.
The young ladies instinctively stepped forward, some even disregarding their composure as they leaned over the railing to watch below……
With a crisp snap, one of Su Yulou’s arrows was split in half by Lin Zhiran’s arrow, the broken pieces tumbling to the ground. Su Yulou’s second arrow, with a resonating buzz, was forcefully shaken by the impact against the wooden shield and plummeted down. Before the astonished crowd could even gasp, Lin Zhiran’s second arrow streaked through the air like a shooting star, striking precisely at the same spot where Su Yulou’s arrow had landed— right on the lion’s nose!
This was no longer just a display of superb archery, but an act beyond words! Everyone watched, wide-eyed, as Su Yulou’s arrow was split clean in half and the other was shaken loose from the wooden shield by sheer force. The power required to achieve such a feat was unimaginable! Not only was Lin Zhiran’s archery extraordinary, but even his arm strength was astonishing!
The crowd collectively drew a sharp breath, rendered speechless by the spectacle. A hush fell over the field, so silent that even the drop of a pin could be heard. Then, like a crashing tide, a wave of cheers erupted— ten times more passionate and excited than before!
The young ladies, caught up in the excitement, joined in the celebration. Even Lin Yuanxin, who had always carried herself with the grace and composure of a refined lady, was now flushed with excitement. Pulling Ouyang Nuan toward the edge of the pavilion, she shouted enthusiastically, “Brother, you’re amazing! Absolutely amazing!”
A group of elegant young ladies stood above, their presence long noticed but deliberately ignored until now. With their enthusiasm on full display, they immediately drew the attention of countless young men below, who instinctively looked up at them.
However, Ouyang Nuan’s gaze was drawn elsewhere, unconsciously settling on the young man clad in a silver-white brocade robe edged with golden embroidery. He was tall despite his young age, his striking appearance making him stand out prominently in the crowd. As if sensing her gaze, he turned his head and met her eyes.
His features were flawless— fair as jade, his dark pupils reflecting a faint shimmer, clear and pristine like flawless black gemstones. His beauty was near-perfection, like a meticulously sculpted statue, every detail just right, resembling an unparalleled work of art. It was a sight that could leave one mesmerized yet, at the same time, self-conscious of their own inadequacies.
Ouyang Nuan neither looked away nor avoided his gaze. Instead, she offered a gentle smile. Lin Zhiran smiled back, his expression dazzling under the sunlight.
Just then, a maid approached to report that the master had invited the young gentlemen to the front hall for the banquet. Upon hearing that, the young men turned and departed. The ladies in the pavilion, seeing this, understood at once that the competition had concluded. Losing interest, they began discussing their return.
Ouyang Nuan, however, smiled and said, “Ke’er, since everyone wants to go back, why don’t you take them to watch the opera?”
Ouyang Ke gave Ouyang Nuan a strange look, while Lin Yuanxin asked curiously, “Nuan’er, aren’t you coming?”
Ouyang Nuan shook her head slightly. The young ladies glanced below and saw that everyone had left and only Ouyang Jue remained in the garden. Understanding that the siblings likely had something to discuss, they nodded and left with Ouyang Ke.
Ouyang Ke hesitated at first, but Lin Yuanxin, sensing Ouyang Nuan’s desire for some privacy with her younger brother, deliberately clung to Ouyang Ke’s arm and pulled her away.
Ouyang Jue stepped forward and picked up a bow. It was rather heavy for someone his age, yet he still lifted it with his left hand, pulling the string taut with his right. Taking several deep breaths, he tried to draw the bow, but it was clear that he was struggling.
Ouyang Nuan watched from a short distance, her heart filling with concern.
Ouyang Jue attempted multiple times, his right hand turning red and swollen from exertion.
Ouyang Nuan remained silent, not stepping forward to stop him. Sweat beaded on Ouyang Jue’s forehead, but his face showed no sign of frustration. He released an arrow with great effort, but it fell before even reaching the lion shield. Biting his lip, he lowered his stance, attempting to shift his weight downward before pulling the bow again.
Ouyang Nuan’s eyes were full of worry, yet she said nothing.
Halfway through his pull, Ouyang Jue faltered, his foot slipping. The bowstring snapped back into place with a sharp twang. He stared at it in frustration, clearly contemplating another attempt.
At last, Ouyang Nuan could not hold back any longer. She strode forward and snatched the bow from his hands.
Ouyang Jue froze. “Sister? What are you doing here?”
Her heart ached for him, yet she said firmly, “Jue’er, you don’t have to push yourself like this.” She tossed the bow aside and grabbed his hands. His fingers were bruised and bleeding from the strain. Ouyang Nuan held back her tears, instead gently patting his head with a smile. “Silly child, does it hurt?”
Ouyang Jue’s long, dark lashes cast shadows over his eyes. He pleaded, “Sister, let me try again. I must surpass Brother Ran.”
“Jue’er, I’ve told you before that there’s no need to force yourself. So what if you can’t pull the bow?” Ouyang Nuan said softly.
Ouyang Jue, however, shook his head with determination. “Sister, I will surpass everyone! I won’t bring shame upon you. Believe me!”
Ouyang Nuan looked into his pitch-black eyes, full of unwavering resolve. She opened her mouth as if to speak but ultimately said nothing. She had always believed that as long as Ouyang Jue became a diligent and capable person, it would be enough. There was no need for him to be the best at everything. After all, he was only ten years old, still just a child. He shouldn’t be burdened with such heavy expectations. Yet, she had overlooked that deep in his bones, Ouyang Jue harbored a proud and stubborn determination. Today’s events had likely shaken him deeply…… and she had failed to notice.
“Jue’er, I believe in you.” Ouyang Nuan finally said, her lips curling into a smile.
“Mm! One day, I will earn the title of marquis and prime minister. I’ll make you a first-rank lady, so those who look down on us will never dare to mock us again! I will make you and our mother proud! Sister, just wait and see. I will make it happen!” Ouyang Jue declared, lifting the bow once more.
Ouyang Nuan stepped back a few paces, silently watching as he repeatedly pulled the bowstring. A marquis, a prime minister, a first-rank lady…… Jue’er, is that your dream? Do you not realize that my greatest wish is simply for you to be happy? What use are wealth and status if they don’t bring you joy? But if that is what you desire, then I will do everything in my power to help you achieve it!
“Why is Young Master Ouyang still practicing?”
A voice interrupted her thoughts as a young man emerged from behind the flowering shrubs.
Handsome beyond compare— there was no better way to describe Su Yulou. Talented in both the arts and martial arts skills, proficient in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, he was the type of man any woman would find irresistible. Lin Wanru had certainly gone to great lengths to try and ensnare Ouyang Nuan. She sneered inwardly.
“And you are……?” His gaze landed on Ouyang Nuan, his warm smile carrying a hint of intoxicating charm.
