Uncle Jiu is so reliable.
After unloading the wood and fruit tree branches, Qiao Jiuru and the others immediately began digging more than a dozen holes by the side of the house.
Then, one by one, they planted the fruit tree branches.
Fortunately, after Uncle Jiu finished unloading, he left, giving Qiao Jiuru the chance to secretly transfer nearly twenty fruit tree branches into the space.
After planting the tree branches and watering them, the task was finally completed. Whether or not they would grow, it would depend on luck.
Once the fruit trees were planted, Su Huaiyuan immediately started drawing the blueprint for the pushcart. In less than an hour, he had completed a rough sketch of the cart bed.
The cart would allow the children to sleep lying down, sit, and also protect them from the wind, sun, and rain. There were still many things missing.
However, these weren’t a big deal.
Su Ze and Zhou Wanwan had heard from their parents on the way to work in the morning that they were going to make carts for the two sons.
By evening, all the materials were ready.
The couple eagerly looked at the sketch and thought it was a great idea. They wouldn’t have to worry about the two children being cold in the fields or not having a place to sleep anymore.
Su Huaiyuan and Su Ze discussed the sizes of the various parts.
The cart needed to be large enough for the two children to use for at least a few years, so they wanted to make it bigger.
However, after hearing this, Qiao Jiuru said…
“Don’t make it too big, just big enough for two years. If it’s too big, it’ll be hard to push, and there’s not enough space in the fields.”
It would be better to make it small now and then, when the children are three years old, consider making a larger one.
For now, they could make do with the smaller one.
Su Huaiyuan thought about his wife’s suggestion for a moment, then nodded. He understood what she meant.
“In the future, we can make two separate carts and join them together in the fields. They can both play and lie down in them.”
“We don’t have to worry about the wood either. We can slowly gather more wood. After one or two years, how can we not find enough wood?!”
Su Huaiyuan confidently made the decision, feeling quite pleased with his new idea.
Zhou Wanwan and Su Ze thought about it and agreed it was a good plan. The parents were doing this for the two children, so they had no objections and would just follow instructions.
Unfortunately, the dimensions were decided, but it was already getting late, and they had to work tomorrow.
In a few days, they would finish planting all the crops and fields, and things would be easier.
Also, after that, apart from the people assigned to the fields, others would have the opportunity to take leave.
Su Huazhu and the others should take this chance to come over. Qiao Jiuru planned to prepare some tasty food for them and have them bring back some fine grains.
That night, in the space.
Apples, pears, apricots, walnuts, jujubes, plums, hawthorns… basically, all the fruit trees Uncle Jiu could find were in the space.
He had even magically brought back several potted begonias, primroses, and wintersweet, which made Qiao Jiuru both surprised and delighted.
Except for the begonias, primroses, and wintersweet, which were planted outside the western courtyard, all the fruit trees were planted on the opposite bank of the river.
The fruit tree branches that Uncle Jiu helped find were planted half outside their house and half smuggled into the space.
If Uncle Jiu asked, she would just say the trees didn’t take or were possibly pruned by someone.
“I wonder when these fruit trees will bloom and bear fruit here?!”
Qiao Jiuru was really looking forward to it. She hadn’t had fruit in a long time, and just thinking about it made her mouth water.
“Maybe in a month if we’re lucky, or two months at most.”
Su Huaiyuan also missed the taste of apples, pears, and plums. He calculated, and within two months at the latest, they would have fruit to eat.
In the meantime, they would be able to harvest a new batch of corn, sweet potatoes, soybeans, wheat, and rice. The food supplies were growing, and the couple felt more at ease and calm.
“Let’s make more fish balls tomorrow night and slaughter three chickens. Hua Zhu and the others will probably come by soon.”
Qiao Jiuru guessed that her little daughter would find a chance to visit them in the next few days.
“Let’s slaughter the chickens now. We still need to harvest the crops tomorrow, and make fish balls too, so we won’t have time later.”
The time in the space was different, so they didn’t need to worry about not having enough time. They could split the tasks up and take their time. Su Huaiyuan suggested.
Qiao Jiuru had no objections. She had just had a batch of eggs incubated by the hens two days ago, and in a few days, they would have a new batch of chicks.
Also, slaughtering a few chickens didn’t take much time. She quickly caught the chickens, boiled water, slaughtered them, and plucked the feathers in one go, then proceeded to gut them and chop them up.
Soon, a large pot of potato chicken stew was simmering, and the chicken offal was stir-fried with onions, wood ear mushrooms, dried mushrooms, chili, and ginger, creating a fragrant dish in another large bowl.
Finally, chicken oil was slowly rendered over a low flame to make a jar, which could be used for over a month.
The next day at work,
Cai Qingwen, Zhou Meihua, and Old Feng, along with Feng Zilu, joined them to work.
They had heard about the pushcart bed for the two children.
“I’ll help you guys tonight. With more hands, we can finish the cart sooner, and then Da Bao and Xiao Bao can use it.”
Cai Qingwen was eager to help, saying that since she was free in the evening, she might as well help and bond with the family while working.
Su Huaiyuan and the others had no objections.
The more people helping, the sooner the cart would be ready.
Otherwise, Zilu would have to help take care of the two little ones every day.
Since Old Feng’s stomach illness had improved day by day, the grandfather and grandson had become more familiar with Su Huaiyuan’s family.
Especially last week, after Qiao Jiuru, Su Huaiyuan, and Old Feng had discussed and reached an agreement about the ancient jade trade, the two families had grown even closer.
Qiao Jiuru and Old Feng had agreed that within five years, they would deliver grain every three months: 150 pounds of fine grain, 300 pounds of coarse grain, plus 500 yuan, 10 pounds of meat tickets, 20 pounds of grain tickets, 20 pounds of cotton, and cloth for clothing.
The meat and grain tickets, cotton, and cloth, as well as the 500 yuan, wouldn’t all be given at once. The cotton and cloth would be provided before the snow in October.
As for the money, Qiao Jiuru had given 100 yuan first, with the remaining 100 yuan to be given later when they had the money.
Old Feng had no intention of asking for other things when he heard about the grain, but after seeing the ancient jade, Qiao Jiuru insisted on giving it to him.
In the past, this piece of ancient jade could not be bought for less than ten thousand yuan, and it was almost impossible to find a seller.
Thinking about it, Qiao Jiuru felt like she had made a great deal.
What surprised and delighted Qiao Jiuru the most was that after she put the ancient jade into the space, it suddenly turned into a beam of light and disappeared inside the space.
Then, both Qiao Jiuru and Su Huaiyuan noticed that the air in the space had improved, and the crops in the fields, as well as the chickens and fish they raised, were growing much faster than before.
The jade… truly magical!
