Deportation Committee
“Director, I’ve already completed the documents and proof for the Su family’s deportation this morning. I also went out and bought train tickets for them—it’s for tomorrow. Do you think that’s appropriate?”
Tan Shuwei placed the train tickets and the deportation documents on Lin Kesheng’s desk, proactively reporting the situation.
Lin Kesheng had not been in the office all morning and also didn’t appear during lunch.
It wasn’t until the afternoon when he returned to work that he realized Tan Shuwei had already come in.
Thus, without hesitation, Tan Shuwei brought the materials from the morning for him to review.
“The Su family is being deported to…”
“Director, have you gathered any information? What did you find out?”
Lin Kesheng’s expression was unreadable as he reached for the documents Tan Shuwei had just placed down, asking his question.
Unexpectedly, Tan Shuwei spoke up faster than him.
“I’ve got the news. They’re being parachuted into your position. No, actually, it’s an additional vice-director role.”
Lin Kesheng’s expression grew visibly worse at the news, and he had no desire to review the Su family’s deportation documents anymore.
“I heard it’s from that person’s side. Is it true?”
That person was Lin Kesheng’s counterpart because Lin Kesheng was the one who promoted him, and the two of them were in the same boat.
“Hmph. If my position hadn’t been so secure without any mistakes, perhaps they would’ve parachuted into my role instead.”
Since hearing this news, Lin Kesheng had been in a foul mood.
He used to be able to call the shots in the committee, but that might not be the case anymore.
Moreover, he had to be even more cautious now, as a single mistake could mean losing his position altogether, not just having someone else move in.
“Director, that’s why I’m telling you to quickly handle the things on your desk. We can’t afford to let someone new take over and find fault with what we’ve done, using it as a way to attack us. Also, we don’t know the other person’s background or personality, so we must be cautious.”
Tan Shuwei glanced at Lin Kesheng without much concern, noting that he seemed uninterested in the documents about the Su family.
He felt relieved.
Even if Lin Kesheng saw them, Tan Shuwei wasn’t worried.
After all, he had plenty of persuasive arguments to sway him.
Ultimately, with the new person about to be parachuted in, Lin Kesheng had no choice but to show respect and try to win him over.
As expected, Lin Kesheng didn’t just listen but also realized that Tan Shuwei was someone he needed to ally with.
“Old Tan, working with you is always pleasant. We know each other well. I trust you with this matter. Handle the Su family issue as you’ve suggested.”
Lin Kesheng wasn’t worried that Tan Shuwei would shield the Su family.
At most, he’d assign them to a better place.
Beyond that, Tan Shuwei wouldn’t dare do more.
Leave some leeway, give the other party a good impression, and if something happens later, they’ll owe you a favor.
“Director, I also think we’re doing well now. Everything is harmonious. All we need to do is show up for work and earn a living.”
Tan Shuwei immediately expressed his stance.
He was content with his current job and just wanted to do it well.
Lin Kesheng was very satisfied with this attitude.
As long as Tan Shuwei didn’t team up with others to go against him, everything would be fine.
“Old Tan, I like people like you.”
“Director, you’re not bad to us either.”
“Old Tan, you know me.”
“Director, if there’s nothing else, I’ll submit this deportation file and go. Before the end of the day, I’ll take someone to the Su family and announce the decision.”
“You go ahead.”
The two exchanged pleasantries, and Tan Shuwei took the deportation materials and submitted them.
Just before the end of the workday, he called two young people, a man and a woman, to head to the Su family’s house.
At the Su family’s home, after lunch, Su Huaiyuan had gone to the newspaper to submit the declaration severing ties with his youngest son and daughter, as well as the payment for the newspaper advertisement.
He returned home after that.
Then, the family settled in at home.
All the belongings they could pack were ready, with Zhou Wanwan and Su Ze packing things according to Qiao Jiuru’s instructions, waiting for them to be taken.
In the afternoon, Qiao Jiuru and Su Huaiyuan used the excuse of resting to enter the space and harvested the mature sweet potatoes and potatoes.
The items in the space could only be planted and harvested manually.
The couple took advantage of the time difference in the space, spending just one afternoon to harvest all the sweet potatoes and potatoes, then replanting another batch.
“Huaiyuan, I was thinking of exchanging these sweet potatoes and potatoes for rice and flour. What do you think?”
Qiao Jiuru didn’t want to eat sweet potatoes and potatoes all the time, even though the quality from the space was excellent.
She would much prefer rice and flour.
Moreover, with a new batch being ready in less than a week, if they kept planting, they’d never be able to finish all the sweet potatoes and potatoes, no matter how much they ate.
“I agree. These sweet potatoes and potatoes are of good quality and very large. This small amount has already added up to five thousand pounds.”
The yield was incredibly high. This amount would be enough to feed their family for over half a year.
Not only did Qiao Jiuru not want to eat sweet potatoes and potatoes every day, but neither did Su Huaiyuan.
“We’ll also check with Xiao Lei tonight to see if he’s willing to trade and how it would work.”
Qiao Jiuru was delighted.
She knew her husband would always support her.
The couple also used the time while harvesting the sweet potatoes and potatoes to cook a large pot of white porridge and millet porridge, steam a pot of rice, and prepare two large bowls of noodles.
Finally, Tan Shuwei arrived at the Su family’s house, accompanied by two young members from the Deportation Committee, as well as staff from the street office.
Su Huaiyuan, Qiao Jiuru, Zhou Wanwan, and Su Ze were all dressed in patched clothes, looking uneasy and unsure.
They didn’t dare to meet the eyes of the visitors.
“Su Huaiyuan, Qiao Jiuru, Su Ze, Zhou Wanwan, Su Xingchen, Su Xinghai, the documents for your deportation have been finalized. The destination is Baigou Village, Mengtou Township, Tongshi County, Jisheng Province. You’ll be escorted to the train station tomorrow morning at 8:00 by the street office.”
Tan Shuwei’s face was expressionless as he coldly announced the Su family’s fate.
“Director Tan, I heard the two children from the Su family aren’t here.”
The street office staff had already received the news. When they heard the two children would also be deported with the family, they immediately reported this.
“Comrades, the children were originally adopted by relatives. Since they need to go with us, we’ll go tell the relatives now. I guarantee the two children will be at the train station tomorrow.”
Qiao Jiuru hurriedly and nervously reassured them, repeatedly promising that the two children would be there, ready to go.
“If we don’t see them at the train station tomorrow, you’ll have to escort them back to the Deportation Committee.”
Tan Shuwei wasn’t actually sure what the Su family’s plans were for the two children.
But now that it was pointed out, he couldn’t let it become an issue. He could only proceed with business as usual.
The staff from the street office agreed, and Tan Shuwei’s two young companions also had to give him face.
“Director Tan, the Su family has many belongings. They can’t possibly take all of them with them, right?”
The staff from the street office had already surveyed the Su family’s house and had plans in mind.
“They’re being deported, not going on a holiday. Apart from clothes, shoes, bedding, and personal items, they can’t take anything else.”
These people were truly shameless.
Tan Shuwei despised them but maintained his facade, making the decision in front of the two young assistants.
Since he, the Deputy Director of the Deportation Committee, had spoken, the street office staff and the two young people had no choice but to agree.
