Chapter 18

The brown soup on the clothes had dried completely. Xu Ning soaked the clothes in water, sprinkled some detergent on them and rubbed them slowly with her hands.

Knowing that Xu Ning wanted to wash clothes, He Beian poured out the water in the bucket, filled another bucket of water, and walked back carrying the bucket.

He took it back so that she wouldn’t have to run to the well again, and he did it by the way.

The lights in the room were on. Xu Ning was sitting under the electric light, rubbing her clothes. The dim light was not too bright, and it couldn’t even make her exposed arms look white.

He Beian lifted the door curtain and paused for two seconds. Then he carried the bucket into the house and placed it next to the basin where Xu Ning washed clothes.

Xu Ning looked up at him, then lowered her head and continued to rub the clothes in her hands. The stains were distributed in small patches, and she had to rub them bit by bit.

The loose vest fell forward as she bent over. Her thin back and overly thin waist caught He Beian’s eyes. He quickly looked away and looked at the clothes in her basin. “There is a water tank in the kitchen. Go to the kitchen to scoop some water.”

“Oh, okay.” Xu Ning raised his hand, grasping the cloth under his hand, and deliberately used the light to check whether it was clean.

After making sure that it could be washed off, she became more confident and lowered her head to wash other places.

She didn’t expect there to be water in the kitchen at first. After all, it was inevitable since she had just arrived.

After explaining it, He Beian saw that she had no intention of paying attention to him, so he went back to the room and continued with his own business.

Xu Ning checked the clothes from front to back, and only after making sure that nothing was missed did she take them out and rinse them with satisfaction.

After rinsing and wringing out the clothes, I hung them on the clothesline in the yard. I touched the clothes that I had washed in the afternoon, which were all wet.

After returning the bucket, she walked to the door of He Beian’s room and saw that he was not writing, but was still sitting behind the desk.

Maybe she knocked on the door too softly, but He Beian didn’t seem to hear it. He didn’t turn around or say anything.

She wanted to knock on the door again, but seeing how serious he looked, and thinking about what he had said before that she could come in and out at any time except during sleeping hours, Xu Ning hesitated and stepped into the room.

When she was cleaning the room in the afternoon, she saw a set of bedding in the closet that He Beian had assigned to her. She was sure it was for her.

The subconsciously light footsteps might be easy to detect for ordinary people, but He Beian didn’t notice it for a long time.

Standing next to the wardrobe, Xu Ning finally saw what he was doing.

He held a palm-sized piece of wood in one hand, and in the other hand he held a particularly delicate carving tool, and was carving it carefully on the wood.

Open the closet door, take out the bedding from the bottom layer and bring it to the opposite room, then come back to get the pillow and close the closet door.

After making sure he knew she had taken her things, she wandered back to bed and went back to sleep.
