“Suisui, Niannian, come here for a moment.”
Song Bai called out to Song Suisui and Song Niannian.
Song Niannian replied, “Just a sec, let me put something away first.”
Song Suisui chirped, “Coming!”
Suisui entered Song Bai’s room first and asked curiously, “Brother, what did you want to talk to us about?”
“Wait until Niannian gets here, and I’ll tell you both together.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Niannian arrived.
“I’m here. What’s up, brother?”
Seeing both of them present, Song Bai gestured for Niannian, who was near the door, to close it.
“Brother, what’s all the secrecy about?”
Song Bai smiled and then pulled out two antique-style dressing cases from under his bed.
Though Suisui couldn’t appraise antiques, she could tell these cases were made of high-quality materials.
“I found these at the scrap station. They’re good pieces—take them for yourselves.”
“Brother, there’s definitely more to it than just these cases. If it were just the cases, you wouldn’t have been so secretive about it.”
Niannian knew her older brother well, so she spoke up.
“Heh, each of you pick one and open it—you’ll see.”
“Sis, you choose first. I’m fine with either.”
Suisui glanced at the two cases, which looked nearly identical, and didn’t mind either way.
“No, you go ahead and pick, Suisui.”
Suisui looked at her and saw Niannian smiling at her.
Since they were practically the same, Suisui didn’t hesitate and took the one decorated with what looked like plum or peach blossoms.
The other one, adorned with chrysanthemums, naturally went to Niannian.
After receiving their cases, Niannian and Suisui opened them simultaneously.
Inside Suisui’s case were a pair of jadeite bangles, a jade bead necklace, a gold bangle, and a white jade Buddha pendant.
Niannian’s contents were similar, though her jadeite bangles weren’t solid green but rather “spring with color” (lavender and green).
After seeing the items, Niannian and Suisui wordlessly closed the cases and placed them back on the table, returning them to their brother.
“What’s this about?” Song Bai asked, baffled.
Suisui glared at him. “What else? These are way too valuable—take them back.”
“Yeah, bro. Keep these for yourself—you can give them to your future wife someday.”
Song Bai: “…” He was utterly speechless.
“Don’t overthink it. It took me years to find a matching pair of these cases—I specifically hunted them down for you two. If you don’t take them, all my effort would’ve been for nothing.”
With that, he pushed the cases back toward them.
Hearing this, Suisui and Niannian hesitated but eventually accepted them.
Now holding the expensive gifts, Suisui grinned and said, “Brother, don’t worry—since we’ve taken these, when you get married, I’ll definitely prepare a lavish betrothal gift for you!”
Niannian chimed in, agreeing that she’d do the same.
Song Bai listened to their words, his forehead creasing with exasperation.
What kind of nonsense were these two spouting?
He was a grown man—since when did he need two young girls to prepare betrothal gifts for him?
Wouldn’t that make him seem utterly useless?
Knock, knock, knock… Someone rapped on Song Bai’s door.
Song Tong’s voice came from outside: “Open up… You three having a secret meeting without me? How unfair! Open the door now!”
Hearing this, the three inside couldn’t help but laugh. Niannian pulled the door open and let Song Tong in.
He strode in and plopped himself onto the desk.
When he saw the dressing cases Song Bai had given to Niannian and Suisui, he wasn’t surprised at all.
Instead, he smirked at Song Bai and said, “So you finally managed to get a matching pair.”
Song Bai ignored him and turned to Suisui and Niannian. “That’s all for now. You two should head back to your rooms and get some sleep. Suisui must be exhausted after running around all day.”
“Alright, we’re off then.”
Niannian and Suisui left, each cradling their dressing cases with smiles on their faces as they returned to their room.
Song Suisui opened the dressing case again to admire its contents before storing it away in her spatial ring.
After being jostled around in the truck all day, her bones felt like they were about to fall apart. The moment her head hit the pillow, she was out like a light.
Just before drifting off, she had the vague feeling she’d forgotten something.
FF had waited all day without seeing any reaction from Song Suisui.
Unable to resist, it checked in on her—only to find her fast asleep, snoring away.
It instantly felt deeply wronged!
When it first arrived, the main system had assured it that humans adored systems the most.
But its own host didn’t seem to like it very much.
Heartbreaking…
Meanwhile, Song Suisui, lost in dreams, had no idea she had wounded a poor system’s fragile heart.
She was currently dreaming of lounging on a bed of money.
In fact, the moment she received Song Bai’s gift, her first thought had been: Who needs a golden finger? Who needs some lousy system?
Just cling tight to my big brother and sister’s coattails, and sooner or later, I’ll coast straight to the pinnacle of life!!!
……
After a night of sweet dreams, Song Suisui woke up glowing with energy.
Watching her cheerfully brushing her teeth, Song Tong nudged Song Bai and said with a grin, “Who knew our Suisui was such a little money-grubber?”
“Isn’t it adorable?” Song Bai replied with a soft chuckle.
In high spirits, she headed to work for another day of leisurely slacking off.
After her shift, as she was about to wait for the bus home, she suddenly spotted a woman sneaking out of an alleyway, carrying a child in a suspicious manner.
At first glance, something felt off about the woman.
So she quietly tailed her.
After following for a while, Suisui noticed the woman had terrible situational awareness.
“Doesn’t seem like a human trafficker,” she muttered.
Still, whether or not she was a trafficker, Suisui kept following—because the woman’s behavior was just too strange. The way she had looked at the child earlier was chilling, as if staring at something already dead.
That was why Suisui kept trailing her. After all, with her combat skills, handling one woman would be a breeze.
Following at a relaxed pace, she wondered where the woman was taking the child.
The path grew increasingly remote until they finally reached a riverbank.
When the woman stopped, Suisui tensed up.
Holy crap! Is she about to throw the kid into the river to drown?!
Her guess was spot-on—the woman raised the sleeping child and prepared to hurl them into the water.
But the moment the child left her hands, Suisui sprinted forward in a flash and snatched the kid back.
Of course, this sent her tumbling into the river. But Song Suisui was never one to take a loss lying down—right before falling in, she shoulder-checked the woman, sending her into the water too.
As she plunged in, the child in her arms inevitably swallowed some water.
Fortunately, Suisui knew how to swim. Within seconds, she resurfaced, lifting the child above the water as she paddled toward the shore.
The woman, clearly also a swimmer, saw Suisui rescuing the child and immediately started swimming toward her.
Sensing a malicious gaze, Suisui glanced back and locked eyes with a pair of serpent-like pupils.
She cursed inwardly and swam harder for the riverbank.
The child had actually woken up the moment they hit the water.
But Suisui had covered their mouth and nose, only releasing them once they were above the surface.
Though terrified, the kid was smart—realizing Suisui was saving them, they stayed still and let her carry them without struggling.
Still, with how dazed they looked, Suisui couldn’t tell if they were just in shock or genuinely frozen with fear!

Using “they” keeps it gender-neutral since the original Chinese text doesn’t specify the child’s sex.
