At dinner, when the Song family father and son heard that Song Suisui would be cooking, their faces couldn’t help but reveal a look of mixed emotions.
Song Suisui planted her hands on her hips, wearing a “smiling” yet threatening expression. “Dad, big brother, why aren’t you eating? Don’t you like it?”
Under Suisui’s fierce glare, Song Jianjun and Song Bai immediately summoned their survival instincts. Both grinned and assured her they would absolutely finish every bite of the food she made.
“Alright then, I’ll be waiting to see those clean plates,” Suisui said cheerfully, retracting her glare.
Hmph~ (。-`ω-)
Seeing her lively younger sister and family like this, Song Niannian silently vowed in her heart: This time, I will protect our Song family no matter what.
…
After dinner, Niannian told her parents about finding a job at the supply and marketing cooperative, including how much it would cost to secure the position. She also mentioned her intention to give the job to Suisui instead.
Suisui immediately refused. “Sis, you found this job yourself—why give it to me? Besides, I don’t even like working at the supply and marketing cooperative.”
If Niannian doesn’t take this job, how will she meet the male lead? Suisui didn’t want to accidentally erase their first encounter.
Moreover, she already had her own plans for work.
Niannian tried to persuade her further, but Suisui quickly cut her off, firmly stating again that she didn’t need the job.
The two sisters argued back and forth for so long that Ma Xiumei and Song Jianjun couldn’t even get a word in. Still, seeing their children’s selfless attitudes, the couple felt deeply gratified.
They had raised four children, all of whom got along well and weren’t selfish.
At this point, Song Bai spoke up. “If Suisui really can’t find a job, then I’ll go to the countryside, and she can take over my position.”
Niannian gasped. “No way!”
Suisui waved her hand. “I don’t want big brother’s job either!”
Having read the original novel, Suisui knew full well how miserable Song Bai’s life would be if he went to the countryside. There was no way she’d let that happen again!
Scolded by his sisters in unison, Song Bai couldn’t help but shrink back.
Sigh…
I’m the older brother, right? So why am I scared of my little sisters?
So embarrassing.
“Don’t worry about my job,” Suisui said. “I’ll go meet a friend tomorrow to ask around for leads.”
Suisui and Niannian’s school had been reported back in March, leading to all second-year high school students graduating early.
That’s why they were currently at home.
Plus, since they weren’t yet sixteen and with Song Jianjun and Ma Xiumei’s connections, neither the neighborhood committee nor the educated youth office was in a hurry to pressure them.
Still, Niannian and Suisui needed to settle their job situations as soon as possible.
As for the five hundred yuan needed to secure the job, Niannian had no choice but to borrow it from her family for now. After all, there was no way she could scrape together five hundred yuan in just three days on her own.
SuiSui, on the other hand, wasn’t worried at all. She remembered from the novel that there was a black market in the alley near the machinery factory. Its boss not only dealt in goods but also handled property and job transfers.
The only catch? The prices were a bit steep—probably higher than what Niannian’s supply and marketing cooperative job would cost.
But as long as she could buy a job, Suisui could figure out the money issue later. Worst case, she’d borrow from her parents and pay them back eventually.
Truthfully, the Song family wasn’t poor. They could easily afford the five hundred yuan for Niannian’s job—after all, with four working adults in the household, saving up that much wasn’t a problem.
So when Niannian mentioned needing the money, Ma Xiumei immediately went to their room and handed her the five hundred yuan, urging her to secure the job quickly to avoid complications.
And if Suisui needed money for a job, they wouldn’t hesitate to help her either.
After the discussion, the family retired to their rooms.
Back in her room, Suisui checked the countdown for her blind box draw.
The nine-grid layout still shimmered with golden light. Trusting her gut, she picked three boxes.
This time, the prizes were: five cans of milk powder, five hundred yuan, and a spatial storage ring.
“Wow, System, you’re way more generous tonight than this afternoon!”
Originally worried about money, Suisui was thrilled to get the five hundred yuan—combined with the hundred from earlier, she now had six hundred. That should be enough to buy a decent job, right?
The milk powder could be used to nourish herself. At fifteen, she might still grow a few centimeters taller with proper nutrition.
If there was one thing Suisui resented about transmigrating, it was losing height.
Back in her original world, she was a solid 170 cm (5’7″). Now? A pitiful 160 cm (5’3″).
She wasn’t asking for her old height—just 165 cm (5’5″) would be enough.
Whimper~ Who understands my pain?!
But the real jackpot was the spatial storage ring she’d been dreaming of.
Following the instructions, Suisui bound the ring with a drop of blood and checked its space.
It wasn’t huge—only about twenty square meters—but that was more than enough for her needs.
A storage ring—the ultimate must-have for home and travel!
Hell yeah~ (*/\*)
…
The next morning, Song Niannian headed to the supply and marketing cooperative in the eastern part of town with the money in hand.
Meanwhile, Song Suisui left shortly after her, taking a bus to the area near the machinery factory. After wandering around for a while, she finally found the well-hidden black market.
Finding a secluded spot, she pulled out the cosmetics she had gotten from her morning blind box draw and began transforming her appearance.
Soon, a dark-skinned, slightly shorter girl with buck teeth emerged.
The cosmetics Suisui had drawn that morning weren’t ordinary—they were from a professional makeup kit, complete with wigs and other disguise tools.
At the entrance of the black market, a skinny man stood guard. When she approached, he asked in a low voice, “Buying or selling?”
“Both,” Suisui replied quietly. “But what I want to buy is something only your boss can provide. Mind introducing me?”
The man—nicknamed Shouhou (“Skinny Monkey”)—glanced at her and immediately winced at her bucktoothed grin. Still, business was business, so he told her to wait while he headed deeper into the alley.
A few minutes later, he returned with another man to take his place as lookout, then led the heavily disguised Suisui inside.
Stopping at a door, Shouhou knocked.
“Who is it?” came a voice from inside.
“Brother Piao, it’s me, Shouhou,” he answered.
With a click, the door cracked open. Brother Piao eyed Shouhou, then scrutinized Suisui before finally letting them in.
Once inside the courtyard, Shouhou whispered something to Brother Piao, who then turned to Suisui.
“Shouhou says you’re here to buy and sell. Care to explain?” Brother Piao’s gaze was sharp, but Suisui didn’t flinch.
“I need to buy a job,” she said. “As for what I’m selling… I’ll only show that to your boss.”
Brother Piao exchanged a glance with Shouhou, then walked toward the main house.
Less than three minutes later, he opened the door and gestured for Suisui to enter.
Inside, she saw two men—one in his early twenties and the other around Song Jianjun’s age. For a moment, she wasn’t sure which one was the boss.
The older one spoke first. “What are you looking to buy, little girl?”
Skipping the guessing game, Suisui cut straight to the point.
“I need a job!”
