Chapter 12
“I’ll go back and tell Uncle and Aunt about breaking off the engagement with Brother Beichen, but… can we talk about our matter a bit later?”
Xia Chuwei looked at Gu Shisheng, her eyes showing a trace of hesitation and unease.
Gu Shisheng was slightly taken aback. He had originally thought it would take more time and effort to make Xia Chuwei determined to break off her engagement with Mu Beichen.
However, he had never expected Xia Chuwei to make this decision so decisively.
Seeing that Gu Shisheng didn’t respond right away, Xia Chuwei felt a little uneasy.
She hurriedly explained, “I don’t mean anything else, it’s just that if I just broke off the engagement with Brother Beichen and then immediately told them I was with you, it would indeed be a bit awkward.”
“I don’t want Uncle and Aunt to worry.” Xia Chuwei’s voice interrupted Gu Shisheng’s thoughts.
Gu Shisheng came back to his senses, the doubt in his heart gradually fading as he looked at her.
He smiled and said, “Alright, I promise you.”
After a moment of silence, Gu Shisheng slowly said, “I understand your concerns, but this matter can’t be dragged on for too long.”
“How about we tell Uncle and Aunt from the Mu family on the day we get our marriage certificate?”
Xia Chuwei thought for a moment and felt that Gu Shisheng’s suggestion wasn’t unreasonable.
So, she nodded and said, “Alright, I agree.”
Seeing this, Gu Shisheng felt a little more at ease.
He knew Xia Chuwei was a filial girl, and not wanting to put the Mu family in a difficult position was natural.
This arrangement could give her time to adjust to the new relationship while avoiding unnecessary trouble.
However, deep down, Gu Shisheng still had a lingering doubt.
He couldn’t help but think of Mu Beichen’s past behavior toward Xia Chuwei, which never seemed to show much affection.
Still, he wasn’t entirely at ease, always feeling that Mu Beichen wouldn’t just let go so easily.
This was fine, Gu Shisheng thought.
At least for now, they could stabilize the situation. Once everything was settled and the marriage certificate obtained, even if Mu Beichen wanted to win her back, he would have no chance.
Besides, he didn’t want Mu Beichen to know about their relationship before they got the certificate, in case he deliberately caused trouble.
After all, they were both men—he didn’t believe that Mu Beichen truly felt nothing for Xia Chuwei.
It was Mu Beichen who had made Xia Chuwei cry, and not just once or twice. He was utterly unworthy of being with her.
What was even worse was that, despite having a fiancée, he still crossed the line and got entangled with other women.
Such behavior was intolerable. Since Mu Beichen didn’t know how to cherish her, Gu Shisheng felt no guilt in stealing her away.
Originally, Gu Shisheng had planned to take Xia Chuwei out for a stroll, but seeing that she was in low spirits, he didn’t bring it up again.
After asking her opinion, he drove her back to the Mu residence.
“Before we get the marriage certificate, I won’t tell anyone about it. You shouldn’t tell the Mu family either, alright?”
“Otherwise, they might think you’re marrying me on a whim because you were hurt by Mu Beichen, and they might try to stop us. After all, we haven’t spent much time together over the years—they probably wouldn’t feel reassured about you being with me.” Gu Shisheng said this as he looked at her before she got out of the car.
“Alright, I understand.” Xia Chuwei didn’t doubt him.
Gu Shisheng kept watching until she walked to the Mu family’s door and went inside, disappearing from view, before he drove away.
Not long after Xia Chuwei returned home, Mrs. Mu came in with an angry face, leading her two sons.
