Chapter 7: Eavesdropping at the Corner

Hearing the man come in, Cheng Yuanyue panicked and had no choice but to crawl under the bed.

The man walked in, unbuttoned his shirt, and took it off, revealing a plain white vest underneath. From Yuanyue’s angle, she could clearly see the firm, well-defined muscles on his chest. Eight perfect abs, each one solid and sculpted, practically begging to be touched.

In her previous life, she had been a face-connoisseur—weak to handsome men. Normally, she could only watch short videos of hot guys with abs online. She never expected that after transmigrating into this book, she would encounter such an absolute specimen so soon.

Her heart skipped. Oh, this is real. She swallowed hard, remembering the man she had slept with right after transmigrating. His chest had been equally firm, equally irresistible… It was a pity she’d been too preoccupied that night to appreciate it properly.

“Who’s there?”

The man’s ears were sharp. The faint sound of her swallowing had alerted him. His voice turned wary as his hand moved toward his waist, step by step approaching the bed.

Yuanyue shut her eyes tightly as his footsteps grew nearer. It’s over. If he finds me, will he kill me for sneaking into his room?

Just as he was about to check under the bed, a weak female voice called out from behind the curtains:

“Help… me…”

The man immediately shifted direction and strode toward the sound.

Behind the curtain, a young woman curled up, her face unnaturally flushed, sweat dripping down her forehead. Hearing footsteps, she forced her eyes open and pleaded faintly:

“Save me…”

Yuanyue, still under the bed, clamped a hand over her mouth in shock.

Heavens—it’s the heroine, Su Peipei!

So the unconscious woman she’d seen earlier was Su Peipei. No wonder she couldn’t find her after searching the room—she had been hiding behind the curtain all along.

Wait. That meant… this insanely good-looking, muscle-packed man was the male lead?

The same man she had slept with?

Yuanyue nearly gasped out loud, her hands trembling over her lips.

In the novel, this was the first meeting between the hero and heroine: the heroine had been drugged and begged the male lead for help. He would try to take her to the hospital, but unable to endure, she would pounce on him instead.

Afterward, the male lead would vow to take responsibility, but the heroine would insist it wasn’t his fault—she’d been drugged first.

This was supposed to be their first night together.

But Yuanyue was here, under the bed, about to witness it all.

Dear god, am I really about to hide here and listen to the sound of their passionate lovemaking shaking the bed? Someone save me! I should never have tried to play the hero and rescue the poor little white flower… turns out the real clown is me!

In the book, their relationship would deepen from this moment onward. Later, the male lead would learn that the heroine was the daughter of his father’s old comrade, the very person he had been searching for.

Yuanyue pinched herself hard to stop from screaming. Stay quiet. Don’t ruin their moment. Getting too close to the heroine is the same as courting death. I want to change my fate, not die here.

If dying could send her back to her original world, maybe it would be worth it. But for now—no thanks.

The man, Lu Chen, frowned deeply as he looked at the flushed woman trembling before him. Damn it. Why is there a woman here?

The heroine gazed at him, her eyes hazy and fevered.

“Brother… I can’t hold on. Please… help me…”

Lu Chen nodded.

Under the bed, Yuanyue cursed him silently. Scumbag!

But instead of stripping off his clothes, Lu Chen pulled a pill from his pocket and fed it to the girl.

“This will ease your symptoms. Hold on. I’ll call for someone to take you to the hospital.”

He went to the phone and quickly made a call. Soon, two female staff arrived.

“This woman isn’t well. Take her to the hospital,” Lu Chen ordered coolly, without even a trace of desire in his eyes.

The two women exchanged glances, silently wondering which fool had dared send a drugged woman into this guest’s room. But they didn’t dare waste time and quickly carried Su Peipei out.

After taking the medicine, the heroine was slightly more lucid. Passing Lu Chen, she whispered, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” he replied flatly. “I’ll find out who’s behind this and make sure you get justice.”

And just like that, she was gone.

Silence fell again.

Yuanyue blinked under the bed in disbelief. Wait… what? That’s it?

She had been ready to overhear a night of wild romance and witness the legendary first night of the leads. Instead, the man had… let her go.

Don’t tell me… he can’t perform anymore? Did I break him last time? Otherwise how do you explain this?

Su Peipei was beautiful, clearly drugged, and even begged him directly. Any normal man would’ve caved.

Yep, he’s definitely impotent. That has to be it.

As she spun wild theories in her head, a sudden force yanked her out from under the bed.

Light flooded her eyes. Instinctively, Yuanyue raised a hand to cover her face—not to hide her beauty, but simply out of panic.

“Who are you? What were you doing under the bed? Did you drug that woman just now? Who sent you?”

Lu Chen’s icy voice cut through the air as his hand closed around her throat, his gaze sharp enough to kill.

Yuanyue clawed at his wrist, choking out muffled sounds.

Big brother, you’re strangling me—how do you expect me to talk?

Finally she rasped: “Let… go… I can’t… speak… if you keep choking me…”

He released her instantly.

Yuanyue gasped for air, her neck aching. Damn, this dog of a man almost snapped my neck!

She coughed and sputtered: “Listen, I didn’t mean to enter your room. I saw someone carry in an unconscious woman and I just wanted to help her. Do you believe me?”

It was the truth. Just a few minutes ago, her sense of justice had flared up—and nearly ruined the main couple’s storyline.

“Raise your head when you speak.”

Lu Chen’s nose caught a faint herbal scent from her, one he vaguely remembered from before.

Yuanyue lifted her chin, meeting his gaze squarely. Fine. Look all you want. Who’s afraid of who?

That night when he’d been burning with fever, he hadn’t recognized her. But now…
