Chapter 33: He Didn’t Have a Cent in His Pocket
Lu Zhixing stayed at the hospital for a long time yesterday before coming home. He didn’t even turn on the living room light, so naturally, he had no idea that Xie Yunshu had moved the TV out. That morning, he looked at himself in the mirror, feeling somewhat dazed, trying to find out information at the hospital, but his heart twitched painfully!
Although Zhao Lingling was fired and kicked out of the hospital, and the others were somewhat punished, he knew the real culprit behind everything was himself! But Xie Yunshu wanted a divorce because of this, and he would never accept that.
What happened in the past had already happened, and he was doing his best to make amends. How could she easily say the word “divorce”? Besides, no matter what, this whole mess started because she slapped Zhou Xinyue. If she hadn’t acted, none of this would have happened.
He admitted his mistakes and was willing to change, but divorce was out of the question…
“Zhixing!”
Zhou Xinyue pushed the door open, holding a basket of steamed buns, smiling brightly as she put them on the table. She naturally acted like the lady of the house: “I guessed you hadn’t eaten yet. These just steamed, come eat quickly!”
Lu Zhixing frowned slightly: “Why did you come over?”
Zhou Xinyue raised a set of keys: “I’m moving to the family dormitory. You better free up the marital home soon. Yunshu still doesn’t want to come back, how can I shamelessly just stay here?”
After saying this, she put the keys on the table, then brought out a bowl from the kitchen: “Also some millet porridge. Let’s eat quickly, then we have to go to work!”
“What about Xiaowei?” Lu Zhixing found it strange that she was alone: “He got burned on his arm and leg; can he manage by himself at the hospital?”
A trace of impatience flashed in Zhou Xinyue’s eyes, but she put on the caring mother act: “I just came from the hospital. I fed him; it’s not hurting as much today, and he fell asleep again.”
Lu Zhixing nodded slightly, sighed as he looked at the buns on the table: “You don’t have to work so hard.”
“But I worry about you!” Zhou Xinyue smiled at him, eyes reddening again. “If it weren’t for me, Yunshu wouldn’t have gotten so mad and left. Zhixing, please let me do something for you. Otherwise, I feel guilty.”
Thinking of her suffering, Lu Zhixing softened: “Yunshu’s temper is like that. Last time she slapped you, she didn’t apologize. When she comes back, I’ll take her to apologize to you.”
“Don’t say that!” Zhou Xinyue quickly shook her head, putting a peeled egg into Lu Zhixing’s bowl, softly: “I only got slapped once, Yunshu suffered too. I heard what happened yesterday — it’s all my fault! I never thought anyone would shed tears for me or comfort me like that. That would be unfair to Yunshu…”
Yesterday, Lu Zhixing lost his temper badly at the hospital. Of course, she knew about the incident and deliberately came to stir things up today.
Lu Zhixing frowned: “She was wrong to hit you, but what happened at the hospital has nothing to do with you. You’re innocent.”
He wouldn’t blame Zhou Xinyue for the torment Yunshu had endured for five days — that would just be taking out his anger on the wrong person. Xinyue was already pitiful enough, and Xiaowei was so weak. He believed that, with time, Yunshu would come to understand.
Zhou Xinyue smiled faintly, naturally submissive again: “Zhixing, you don’t have to be so kind to me.”
After they finished eating, Zhou Xinyue hurriedly cleared the dishes and teased him with a smile: “Your hands are for surgery, how can you do chores like this?”
Lu Zhixing was a bit taken aback. Yunshu had said something similar — she always treated him kindly…
The two left the house together. To an outsider, they looked like a real married couple. Zhou Xinyue stood at the door and deliberately wrapped a scarf around his neck: “It’s pretty cold these days, don’t catch a cold.”
Lu Zhixing didn’t sense anything wrong. Thinking about the meal, he reached into his coat pocket: “How much are the buns? I’ll pay you.”
Before Zhou Xinyue could speak, his face suddenly stiffened and turned pale…
He didn’t have a single cent in his pocket!
When Xie Yunshu left, she took all the money from home. He promised to make amends and gave her the bank card. Even the savings book with over a thousand yuan was handed to her… Because he hadn’t been spending much lately, Yunshu did all the cooking and bought clothes for him. She handled all the household expenses; he only worked.
That time he picked her up from the hospital was only the second time he had cooked since they got married.
He had more than ten yuan in his pocket, but he used it to pay for Xiaowei’s medical bills after the burns. Now Lu Zhixing was completely broke!
Zhou Xinyue didn’t notice his odd expression; she was more focused on the watching eyes around them and smiled even sweeter: “Zhixing, do you really have to be so strict with me?”
Lu Zhixing, who had never worried about money before, felt a little panicked now. He just nodded vaguely: “Let’s go to work then.”
No matter how cold he was by nature, he couldn’t admit he had no money — that was too humiliating! This unprecedented embarrassment made him clench his fists slightly. He didn’t mention money to Zhou Xinyue anymore and hurried with her toward the hospital.
They didn’t realize how much impact it made for a single man and woman to come out of the same room in the family dormitory.
Chen Xue was happy but still a bit disdainful: “I thought Dr. Lu was quite upright. Xie Yunshu only returned to her parents’ home a few days ago and already brought someone to live here. Tsk tsk…”
Zhang Qingshan didn’t understand why she was so focused on others’ affairs. He and Lu Zhixing were colleagues and knew that before Zhou Xinyue appeared, the couple had a good relationship. So he didn’t like Zhou Xinyue much.
“It must be a misunderstanding. Dr. Lu isn’t that kind of person.”
Although he said that, he was somewhat uncertain. Honestly, Zhou Xinyue was pretty and constantly calling out to Zhixing, while Xie Yunshu, although beautiful, was not soft in character and had caused trouble by going back to her parents’ home… Could Dr. Lu really resist?
After the two left, the women in the dormitory whispered among themselves, surprised to see the normally reserved Dr. Lu acting like this. And Zhou Xinyue practically clinging to him — this was a fragile little flower?
Pfft, do they think we’re all blind?
Xie Yunshu’s attitude when coming for the TV showed it all. She really didn’t want to live with Lu Zhixing anymore! Now Lu Zhixing was clearly a scumbag. Being a good doctor didn’t mean he had good character. Zhou Xinyue wasn’t any better, either. Which poor orphaned girl wouldn’t cling to a man?
Xie Yunshu’s slap was way too light. If it were them, they’d have grabbed her hair and scratched her face up!
