Chapter 37: “I Will Make Her Come to Apologize to Xue Ting”
Lu Xueting has always cared about her appearance, but this time she was wrapped up tightly, only her swollen, red eyes visible.
“Mom, Xueting?” Lu Zhichen stopped in his tracks, surprised. “Why are you two here?”
Cheng Yuxiang liked to act like a high-status ‘official’s wife.’ Although her son was outstanding, she rarely came to the hospital to visit, and never would she bring Lu Xueting with her. In her words, frequently visiting the son’s workplace was something only low-class parents did…
Cheng Yuxiang’s face was cold: “Go to the car and talk!”
Lu Zhichen could sense the anger underlying his mother’s words. He rubbed his forehead helplessly, feeling that ever since Xie Yunshu left, everything had been a mess…
The mother and daughter came by the family car. Once seated in the back, Lu Xueting cried as she pulled down her scarf. “Brother, I don’t care — you have to stand up for me! Look what she did to me!”
Her face was swollen and red, hair in a mess — she looked truly pitiful.
Lu Zhichen, several years older than his sister, was cold by nature but very protective of her. He immediately grew angry: “Who hit you?”
Cheng Yuxiang clenched her teeth in anger. “Who else but your wife?! Zhichen, no matter how she begs you, this time you must divorce her! First, she hit Zhou Yue, and now she’s hitting Xueting. What’s next, is she going to hit me too?”
Xie Yunshu hit Xueting?
Lu Zhichen was stunned, instinctively wanting to deny it. “How could that be?”
Xie Yunshu had always valued their family deeply. Xueting was straightforward and didn’t always show the respect a sister-in-law should. He disliked being caught up in family quarrels. He had tried to mediate a few times, and there were no serious conflicts — they mostly just argued verbally. Yunshu, as the sister-in-law, usually tolerated Xueting, so over time it had eased.
Besides, Yunshu was always cautious at his family’s place, afraid that if she caused trouble, he’d be stuck in the middle. So physical fights were rare, not to mention slapping back.
But now she actually hit Xueting?
Xueting was their beloved daughter. Did Yunshu ever think about the consequences before laying a hand on her? His parents had already been angry at Yunshu for causing a scene at the hospital. Now Xueting was beaten like this — if they went through with the divorce, what then?
There should be limits even in quarrels!
Cheng Yuxiang held her daughter protectively, resolute: “She must leave the Lu family immediately. Don’t even think about getting a cent from us!”
Lu Xueting covered her face and quickly said, “That damn Xie Yunshu even moved my brother’s TV out! I was mad and went to get it back — that’s why she hit me!”
She didn’t mention the fact that she had cursed first.
Lu Zhichen took a deep breath. He didn’t care about the TV incident, but anger rose sharply in his chest now! What on earth was Xie Yunshu trying to do?
Divorce? Did she really want a divorce? Did she think about how a woman with no job or family background would live without him?
If she wanted the savings account, he’d given it to her. If she wanted to go back to her family, he didn’t stop her. And now she even hit Xueting?
“Mom, I’ll talk to Yunshu about this,” Lu Zhichen said with difficulty, avoiding the divorce topic. “I’ll make her come apologize to Xueting.”
Lu Xueting sensed the protection in his words and got furious. Thinking about how Yunshu had beaten her like a dead dog, her anger threatened to overpower reason: “Just an apology? Brother, what do you mean? She hit me — I want you to lock her up in a mental hospital and never let her out!”
Cheng Yuxiang coldly said, “Five days was too short!”
She obviously agreed with that.
Lu Zhichen’s expression darkened. “I said, I’ll make her apologize! She’s still my wife, the daughter-in-law of the Lu family. Who has the authority to put a normal person in a mental hospital?!”
“Brother, weren’t you the one who locked her up before?” Xueting blurted out, making Lu Zhichen’s face even grimmer.
He regretted those five days and would never do that again.
Cheng Yuxiang now saw her son still had feelings for Xie Yunshu and didn’t want a divorce. She didn’t expect that after Yunshu had worked like a slave in the Lu family for over a year, she’d actually have some use — at least she made her son care!
“Forget the divorce for now. But she must come apologize to Xueting,” Cheng Yuxiang said strategically. “Not just Xueting, but Zhou Yue’s child too! I want her to apologize in front of the hospital and family compound — everyone!”
If she really did this much for Zhichen, then keeping her a few more days wouldn’t hurt, while she searched for a new daughter-in-law. After all, although Yunshu wasn’t very presentable, she took care of her son well and could cook.
Lu Zhichen knew this was a concession from his mother. Otherwise, with her temper, she wouldn’t accept just an apology for Yunshu hitting Xueting.
So he agreed, “I’ll go to the factory’s family compound and find Yunshu. She will come apologize.”
He said this confidently.
On their wedding day, he told Yunshu that couples should settle conflicts face to face. If she ran back to her parents like other women, she couldn’t expect him to come pick her up and make peace.
So often, even when Yunshu was wronged or angry, she still stayed in the family compound at night.
This time she went back to the dorms, and he didn’t look for her once. He wanted her to calm down, and thought that going back to her parents was immature — something only people from broken homes would do.
But now thinking about it, Yunshu never went to university. Maybe he had expected too much?
Maybe she was secretly hoping he’d come pick her up and make up?
She loves him; if he gives in, she’ll come back.
Lu Xueting still wasn’t satisfied. Her face hurt when she spoke, especially her hair, which Yunshu almost pulled out. “She hit me and you still won’t divorce her! And that TV — she said you owe her money! How shameless! She’s been living in the hospital and family compound for over a year, eating and drinking everything for free, yet she still moves stuff back to her family. Don’t you care?”
Lu Zhichen thought about the 3,000 yuan issue and the savings account, furrowing his brow: “When she comes back, all these issues will be settled.”
If she’s willing to help her family a bit, he’s okay with giving them the TV. But he opposes her using all the savings on her family. He didn’t like how Yunshu’s brother looked at him, though he was a good student.
He hoped she would focus all her heart and energy on him.
