Chapter 97: Who Really Hurt the Child?
Zhou Xinyue’s eyes were red and still tearing up as she looked at Lu Jianwei with some surprise: “Dad, why are you here?”
Lu Jianshe’s face was dark and grim. Today’s meeting was about next year’s promotion issues. The scandal involving Lu Zhixing and Zhou Xinyue had some impact on him, but recently he had been very cautious. As a deputy department-level official working overtime every day in his office, others’ opinions of him had improved somewhat.
If nothing unexpected happened, he was very likely to be promoted. Now it was just a matter of what evaluation the director of Jingbei would give him. The difference between the main and deputy director positions was just one word, but the power held was vastly different.
But he hadn’t expected that, right before the new year and when the position was about to be finalized, this kind of trouble would arise! He vaguely felt a bad premonition deep in his heart. Seeing his son and Zhou Xinyue now made his heart even heavier.
Lu Zhixing saw Lu Jianshe and looked surprised: “Dad?”
Lu Jianshe took a deep breath and warned them both with a glance: “Shut up!”
Officer Lao Zhang hadn’t expected that a single call would bring so many people. He personally knew Lu Jianwei. The injuries on Xiao Wei’s body were too shocking. Regardless of whether the grandfather knew or didn’t, they needed to conduct an inquiry and investigation.
Before he could speak, Lu Zhixing anxiously explained his reason for coming: “Officer, our child went missing this morning…”
Missing this morning?
Lao Zhang was stunned for a moment: “That can’t be right. The young lady came with the child and said he was at her place since last night.”
After he said that, he stepped aside, and Lu Jianwei saw Xie Yunshu sitting on a bench inside, with Lu Xiao Wei sitting closely next to her.
“Xiao Wei, where did you run off to? Don’t you know your mother was worried sick?”
Zhou Xinyue reacted, quickly walking over and pulling the child into her arms, crying as she looked at Xie Yunshu: “I know you blame me and Zhixing for leaving together, but the child is innocent. If you have anything, take it out on me!”
She was crying so heartbreakingly, truly like a mother scared and worried for her child. Even the family members and neighbors who came along looked at Xie Yunshu with strange expressions. Xie Yunshu had only divorced Lu Zhixing a few days ago, and Lu Zhixing had already married Zhou Xinyue. It was understandable that she was unhappy, but how could she hurt a child?
Or was Xie Yunshu using Zhou Xinyue’s child to take revenge because of her feelings toward Lu Zhixing?
Chen Xue, who followed in the crowd, was still resentful that she had helped Zhou Xinyue last time but gained nothing. Seeing Xie Yunshu seemingly involved in the missing child immediately sneered coldly: “Some people act so pure on the surface, but turn around and steal someone’s child. It must be jealousy because they can’t have their own. Officer, you have to handle this — this is a crime!”
Zhang Qingshan pulled her aside, not understanding why his wife always liked to meddle in Dr. Lu’s family affairs. He whispered: “The matter isn’t decided yet, say less.”
Chen Xue’s voice got louder. She deliberately glanced at Lu Zhixing: “Isn’t this obvious? The child was just missing and she suddenly appears with the kid. Where in the world is there such a coincidence?”
Lu Zhixing’s expression was complicated. A despicable joy rose inside him. Yunshu must still hate that he married Xinyue, right? Otherwise, how could she bring Xiao Wei out? But no matter what, he was the one at fault. The child was innocent.
“Yunshu.”
He called softly, standing before Zhou Xinyue who was holding Xiao Wei and crying hard. Tilting his head, he looked at Xie Yunshu: “Xinyue has cried all morning over the missing child. If you have anger, take it out on me… I know I’ve wronged you, but after this period, we can still…”
With so many people around, he didn’t finish, but his gaze toward Xie Yunshu grew more fervent.
He still had hope! Once this period passed and rumors died down, he would make Zhou Xinyue leave and marry Xie Yunshu again. This time, he would never wrong her again!
Zhou Xinyue, clutching Xiao Wei, paused for a moment and instinctively pinched him. How could Lu Zhixing still think of divorcing Xinyue and marrying her again? Her reputation was ruined, she married into the Lu family without a penny, and never had a single glorious day. How could she divorce him?
She would cling on and cling to Lu Zhixing until the end!
Squinting, she wanted to cry more to gain sympathy but was suddenly yanked hard away by Xie Yunshu. Xiao Wei’s numb, suffering little face froze for a moment…
“Xie Yunshu, what do you think you’re doing!” Zhou Xinyue cried as she stood up, weakly leaning on Lu Zhixing, tears full of pain: “Xiao Wei is only five years old. If you want to hit or scold, take it out on me!”
Lu Zhixing instinctively supported Zhou Xinyue, his face filled with anxiety: “Xie Yunshu, don’t hurt the child!”
This was the man who kept saying he wanted to remarry her. Pretending to be loving, but only believing the woman who cries. Blindly fooled by Zhou Xinyue — he deserved it!
Xie Yunshu’s eyes were icy cold. She said nothing, immediately pulling Zhou Xinyue away from Lu Zhixing’s arms and then fiercely kicked her. Before anyone could react, she slapped her hard across her tear-streaked face!
Xie Yunshu was always fierce when hitting people, and this time she used all her strength. Zhou Xinyue’s face instantly swelled on one side, far worse than the slap marks on Xiao Wei’s face.
Many people standing in the police station were stunned. A thought flashed through their minds: Has Xie Yunshu gone crazy? How dare she hit someone at the police station! She stole someone’s child and still dared to openly hit Zhou Xinyue!
Lu Jianwei’s expression completely darkened. He looked sternly at Officer Lao Zhang standing behind: “Someone’s hitting people at the police station. Aren’t you going to do anything?”
Lao Zhang felt his head ache. He dryly said: “Miss officer, please speak calmly. You can’t just hit people!”
Although this woman started by slandering others and the child was pitiful, you still can’t just strike someone. How was he supposed to handle this?
Xie Yunshu pulled Xiao Wei in front of her, gently cupped the child’s face, and turned toward everyone. A deep fingernail mark was clearly visible on his slender neck, almost bleeding — showing how vicious the person who did this was.
And that fingernail mark was clearly made just now. But except for Zhou Xinyue, who was holding the child, no one else had touched him!
Zhou Xinyue hadn’t thought Xie Yunshu could notice this either. She bit her lip and argued: “Did you do it just now when we weren’t here?”
Xie Yunshu bent down and loosened the cotton jacket on Xiao Wei, gently saying: “Child, hang on.”
The cold air made the frail child shiver, but he didn’t dodge or avoid it. He exposed the bruised arms and back covered with scars in front of everyone…
The scars of long-term abuse appeared on a five-year-old child who was skinny to the bone. The strong visual shock made everyone present gasp sharply; the air seemed to freeze at that moment.
