Reborn in the Interstellar World as Cannon Fodder Chapter 136

The Seeds Have Spirits of Their Own

Ye Mo found it strange. She hadn’t instructed the elf seeds to form a tree canopy, yet here they were, creating a solid structure overhead. The top of this canopy looked quite sturdy. The fact that the elf seeds could grow into treehouses in the first place was due to their inherent spiritual energy. For them to grow in this way might carry some deeper meaning.

Curious, Ye Mo threw out more seeds, and sure enough, the canopy began to expand outward. By the time she stopped, the tree canopy had extended to cover nearly a thousand square meters.

Ye Mo climbed up to the top of the tree canopy and found a few interstellar soldiers already there. The top of the canopy was flat, with thick layers of branches and leaves. It was sturdy enough that even stepping on it wouldn’t break through.

When the soldiers saw her, they quickly greeted her.

“Hello, madam!”

“Hello, madam!”

Ye Mo smiled and greeted them back. “Hello, everyone!”

One of the soldiers ran over to her. “Madam, what is this tree canopy for?”

Ye Mo frowned slightly. “I don’t know either. The seeds grew like this on their own.”

“Really?” The soldier who had asked wasn’t the only one surprised; the others were equally puzzled.

Ye Mo looked into the distance, suddenly feeling a sense of unease. “How many people are still on Vitality Star right now?” she asked.

“Only the ones nearby. Most people took the day off to visit Planet Elf.”

“I see,” Ye Mo blinked. “You all go ahead and enjoy yourselves. I’m going to keep looking around.”

“Alright!” A baby-faced soldier smiled cheerfully in response.

Soon, the soldiers moved to the centre of the canopy. The baby-faced one had made a small nest-like structure in the branches, just big enough for one person to sit in. He sat cross-legged in it and declared with satisfaction, “Planet Elf has treehouses, and now Planet Life has tree nests. This will be my nest from now on.”

The other soldiers praised his handiwork.

“Yu Chen, you’ve got a good setup there. Make one for me too!”

“Yeah, Yu Chen, I want one too!”

“Come on, it’s not that hard. Can’t you figure it out?” Yu Chen complained as he climbed out of his nest and stretched. Suddenly, he froze and pointed into the distance. “What’s that?”

Everyone followed his gaze, including Ye Mo. What she saw immediately made her shout to the people below, “Quick, everyone climb up! A huge wave is coming!”

The soldiers below looked toward the horizon and saw it—a massive wave, as if the sky itself had folded over, rapidly approaching.

Without hesitation, the soldiers and ability users on the ground rushed toward the tree canopy.

A few moments ago, some of them had been laughing, questioning the purpose of the canopy Ye Mo had created. But now, they were grateful. Without this structure, the wave would likely have swept them away, leaving them unaware of how they died.

Quickly, everyone climbed up onto the top of the canopy, which stood about five meters tall. After greeting Ye Mo, they turned to watch the looming wall of water.

Now they were standing high up and seeing from afar. The sky that was originally very far away was now close and everyone could smell the strong dampness of seawater in the water. Someone commented, “The Vitality Water we’ve been extracting doesn’t have this salty taste.”

“Yeah, weird. Could this tidal wave change the water quality here?” someone else wondered. If the water quality changed, they might not be able to extract Vitality Water anymore.

Ye Mo kept her eyes on the wave, her unease growing. She had only just finished creating the tree canopy, and now such a powerful tide had appeared. If she hadn’t built this, would the tide still have come?

Just then, someone turned to another soldier and said, “Zheng Yize, didn’t you say ten days ago that a tidal wave was coming? How did you figure that out?”

Everyone looked toward Zheng Yize, who was now staring at the wall of water. “I predicted it based on weather patterns, temperature, gravity, and humidity changes. Haven’t you all noticed that the impurities in the Vitality Water have been increasing lately?”

The others exchanged confused glances. They had noticed their extraction rate slowing down recently but had assumed it was because they were growing tired of the repetitive work.

“So it wasn’t that we were bored,” someone muttered. “It was the water quality changing, making the extraction slower.”

“Yeah, I thought I was just slacking off.”

Zheng Yize chuckled. “Come on, don’t sell yourselves short. Even if you were bored, you’ve all gotten really good at this. The slowdown shouldn’t have been this drastic.”

No one had anything to say to that—they’d been so focused on their work that they’d overlooked their own professional skills.

By now, the wave had nearly reached them. Ye Mo quickly shouted, “Everyone sits down and grabs onto the vines!”

She led by example, sitting down and gripping a vine tightly. The others followed her lead.

They hadn’t been holding on for long when the wave hit. Seawater crashed over them, soaking everyone to the bone.

But that wasn’t the worst of it. After the wave passed, the water level rose dramatically. Three meters of the tree canopy’s five-meter height were now submerged.

The water had risen so much, that they realized how fortunate they were. Had more people been on the planet, they might not have been able to save everyone in time.

Zheng Yize turned to Ye Mo. “Madam, did you have a premonition? Is that why you created the tree canopy?”

“It wasn’t me,” Ye Mo replied. “The seeds grew like this on their own. You’ve all seen the treehouses on Planet Elf. They all built themselves like this.”

She didn’t know how to explain the magical properties of the elf seeds. But one thing was clear: the seeds had saved everyone’s lives. While Ye Mo could have saved them herself if needed, doing so might have revealed her secret space.

“These seeds really are alive!” someone marvelled.

“They must adapt to the environment,” Zheng Yize speculated. “Planet Life has no plants and is full of water, so the seeds grew into a canopy instead of treehouses.”
