Chapter 3: Lin Shufen Isn’t Simple Either
“We’re back, Mom! Wife!”
“We’re back, old lady!” The Lin family patriarch, Grandpa Lin, shot his son a look and said, “Just call your wife. My wife, I’ll do the calling.”
“She’s still my—”
Seeing the father and son about to argue again, Jia Chunhua quickly interjected, “Hurry up and get him inside. Don’t bicker out here.”
Once she spoke, the other two immediately shut up and got to work.
Grandpa Lin muttered, “It’s just a twisted ankle, not like he needs to be carried!”
Chu Minghai was tactful. He got down from the sled, hopping on one foot until he reached his mother-in-law, asking anxiously, “Mom, how’s Shufen? She’s pregnant—was she scared by what happened to me?”
Originally, Jia Chunhua had been quite happy to see her son-in-law return safely, but as soon as she thought of how her daughter looked like she couldn’t survive without her man, her temper flared.
“She? She’s already made a big deal of it.”
Chu Minghai tensed up, every muscle going rigid. He asked in a trembling voice, “Mom, what happened to Shufen? What about her and the baby?” He turned around, searching frantically for his wife.
Jia Chunhua snorted, clearly still annoyed, “What happened? She already gave birth!”
Before Chu Minghai could react, Grandpa Lin was the first to shout in shock, “What?! Shufen gave birth?!”
Chu Minghai couldn’t care less about anything else—he dashed toward his wife’s room like an arrow. He moved so fast and smoothly that you’d never guess he had a sprained ankle.
Jia Chunhua watched and couldn’t help but feel moved. Her daughter and son-in-law really did love each other.
Sigh, if only those two could finally start living a proper life.
“Hey, woman, don’t leave us hanging!” Grandpa Lin complained, annoyed by her suspenseful tone, urging her to continue.
“Relax. Mother and baby are doing great. They’re both in the room sleeping like logs—snoring away!”
Hearing that his daughter had safely given birth to a healthy granddaughter, Grandpa Lin brightened up, getting ready to head in and take a look. But Jia Chunhua blocked his way.
“What are you going in for? Let the young couple have some alone time! Don’t be an eyesore, you old fart!”
Shut down hard, Grandpa Lin sulked. Fuming, he pulled out his prized smoking pipe—supposedly a gift from a Red Army commander back in the day—and leaned on the brick bed, puffing gloomily.
Hmph! His daughter adored him, and his granddaughter would love him just as much someday!
Meanwhile, Chu Minghai had charged into the room before even hearing Jia Chunhua finish.
Shufen was the clingiest, most dependent person—giving birth without him around? She must’ve felt so helpless.
As soon as he entered, he saw his wife lying peacefully on the brick bed, her cheeks rosy, her breathing steady as she slept soundly.
Heart aching, he walked over gently, reached out and lightly brushed a sweat-stuck strand of hair from her cheek.
His heart ached. It was all his fault. He was useless. He had made her suffer.
The thought terrified him—her due date wasn’t here yet. She must’ve gone into labor early because she was frightened when he encountered that avalanche today. Thank goodness his mother-in-law was so experienced—if something had happened to either of them, how would he go on?
His wife and child were now the only reason he had to keep going.
He stared at her for a long moment, steadying his emotions. Then he leaned in and kissed her gently on the forehead before turning to find the child she had just given him.
That’s when Chu Minghai noticed someone else on the other side of the bed—his nephew, Lin Feng, was lying there on his side, propped up on one elbow, staring down at a small bundle with an expression that didn’t match his age: full of doting tenderness.
Following Lin Feng’s gaze, Chu Minghai’s breath caught.
That little bundle—that was their baby. His and Shufen’s child.
His heart surged. Tears welled up in his eyes. They had another beautiful creation of love.
Lin Feng had been completely engrossed in staring at his little sister and only snapped out of it when he heard the noise behind him.
He turned to see his uncle, eyes rimmed red and face twitching slightly, like he was holding back intense emotions.
Lin Feng quickly got up to make room and tactfully slipped out of the east room.
Chu Minghai carefully approached the small bundle on the bed.
The warm room and peaceful environment made the little one sleep comfortably. The baby occasionally pouted its tiny lips—perhaps hungry.
With long eyelashes, a small, delicate nose, and a rosy little mouth, the baby was absolutely adorable.
Since the baby was so small with such tender skin, Chu Minghai didn’t dare touch it, fearing that his rough hands might harm the child.
Perhaps sensing her husband’s presence, Lin Shufen, who had been deeply asleep after childbirth, slowly woke up.
With great effort, she lifted her eyelids, worried that the news of her husband’s safety was just a figment of her imagination.
When she saw her husband gazing at their newborn child with soft eyes, only then did she truly relax.
She had been too impulsive. She almost lost both her life and the child. It was just like in the book—her husband was fine, nothing happened…
Yes, Lin Shufen was a transmigrator. In the real world, she was a beauty livestreamer, and after collapsing from food poisoning, she transmigrated into a novel she had read before, “The 80s Lovely Wife’s Counterattack to Become the Richest”
She wasn’t the heroine or even a supporting character—her name didn’t even appear in the story.
The only connection she had to the plot was her home in Jiachun County, where the cannon fodder male supporting character, Chu Minghai, had once been sent to the countryside.
Chu Minghai came from a complicated family background. His parents were ethnic capitalists, and his other relatives lived overseas.
The male and female protagonists were Chu Minghai’s classmates from junior high school. The male protagonist joined the military and eventually reached high office.
The female protagonist, a reborn character, had been born into a family with a heavy preference for sons, and her parents married her off to a man who abused her for a dowry. She had three daughters before giving birth to a son.
She was tortured in her in-laws’ family and eventually died from her husband’s abuse.
After being reborn, she used her previous life’s memories and cunning to marry the male protagonist, cut ties with her family, and later became the richest in the area, seizing opportunities during the reform period.
As for the cannon fodder male supporting character, Chu Minghai, he served as a stepping stone in the female protagonist’s success.
Chu Minghai was extremely intelligent and held many scientific patents. The female protagonist, using her old school friend relationship, intentionally approached him.
At that time, Chu Minghai had a disability and was often in poor health. Under her meticulous care, he fell in love with her, but after she had used him, she disappeared.
Heartbroken by the betrayal, Chu Minghai became even more depressed and lonely. After sending off his parents, he eventually died from his depression.
Lin Shufen had always felt deeply for the male supporting character, Chu Minghai, while reading the book. She never expected to transmigrate into this very novel.
She was a person with a soft exterior but a bold heart. Since she had arrived in this world, she chose to make the best of it. In the real world, her mother had passed away early, and her father remarried, neglecting her.
Transmigrating into the book allowed her to experience family warmth for the first time.
Later, when she met Chu Minghai and fell in love with him, she knew that this man was faithful, gentle, and kind. She thought, “Since fate brought us together, let’s make the most of it. Two people who once suffered deserve a life of happiness together.”
Lin Shufen looked lovingly at the father and child in front of her, feeling content.
Fifteen years had passed since she transmigrated from 2022. Although life was difficult for them now, she knew that the future was bright. With hope, as long as they were together, they could overcome any hardships.
Chu Minghai noticed his wife had woken up and quickly brought the child to her side, so they could both admire the baby’s cuteness.
The room was filled with warmth, and the atmosphere was beautiful.
Grandpa Lin, noticing his son-in-law had been in the room for quite some time, couldn’t hold back any longer. He poked his head into the kitchen.
Taking advantage of his wife’s distraction, he quickly ran over to the east room.
Lin Shufen’s brother, Lin Guodong, seeing this, imitated him and sneaked over as well. Grandpa Lin shot him a glare, but Lin Guodong didn’t mind.
Grandpa Lin knocked lightly on the door. “Dahai, I’d like to see the child. Is it okay to come in now?”
“Come in, Dad.”
