Chapter 9: The Special Materials People Are Made Of
After hearing Lin Guodong’s words, Jia Chunhua and her daughter-in-law were shocked, their teeth gritting as they gasped.
Big Hai was truly lucky. He had just escaped a snow avalanche yesterday and now had escaped another deadly disaster today!
What unbelievable luck!
As Lin Guodong continued to speak, he also felt that this situation was too bizarre, and he sighed in amazement.
The noise from the stove room was so loud that it could be heard in the East Room.
Chu Minghai had been letting his son do some exercises, but he hopped to the door and opened it.
“Big Brother is back, come in and warm up. Sweetie wants—”
Before he could finish, he noticed that all three people in the room were staring at him in shock, with no reaction at all.
He suddenly felt uneasy, goosebumps creeping up on his arms.
What’s going on? Why are Mom and Big Brother and Sister-in-Law staring at him like that?
He slowly looked down, then glanced around himself. There didn’t seem to be anything unusual.
He clenched his fist and cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Why isn’t Big Brother coming in yet?”
Lin Shufen’s voice came just in time to break the tense silence, and the three people in the stove room suddenly came back to life.
Lin Guodong quickly walked over and gently helped his brother-in-law into the room.
This treatment confused Chu Minghai. He hadn’t seen his brother-in-law act so “attentive” in a long time. Was this the kind of treatment he was supposed to enjoy?
Meanwhile, Cai Honglian, left behind in the stove room, was about to say something but was immediately interrupted by her mother-in-law.
“Shh,” Jia Chunhua pressed her finger to her lips, signaling for silence. “Don’t say anything. It’s not the time for that now!”
Cai Honglian understood and nodded.
In the East Room, after Lin Guodong helped Chu Minghai sit down, he rubbed his chin and started staring at him blankly.
Chu Minghai couldn’t take it any longer and asked, “Big Brother, what’s going on? Is there something wrong with me?”
Lin Guodong squinted his eyes and shook his head, then after a long pause, he finally spoke, “No, you’re fine. You’re really good.”
He then began pacing around Chu Minghai.
After a while, he said, “Tell me, what kind of person are you made of? You’ve got culture, you’ve got luck, and you always seem to avoid trouble! What’s so different about you from us? You always manage to turn bad luck into good fortune!”
Lin Shufen chuckled and shot him a playful glare. “Brother, what are you talking about? Why are you acting like a third wheel, saying these weird things today?”
Meanwhile, Lin Feng, who had been forced to do exercises by the little table on the kang (heated bed), had already spaced out. When he heard his aunt call him “weird,” he quickly defended himself.
“Aunt, what’s going on? I haven’t been doing anything recently!”
He pouted, clearly unhappy.
Lin Guodong waved his hand, “Go over there, grown-ups are talking, kids shouldn’t interrupt.”
Lin Feng wasn’t convinced, but seeing that his father had serious matters to discuss, he stopped causing trouble.
Then, Lin Guodong recounted the incident about the house at the forest station being crushed by snow.
Finally, he looked around the room, pleased to see everyone stunned and speechless.
Except for Lin Zheng, of course. This child had great focus, and no one could distract him. Only if it were an emergency would he possibly pay attention.
Lin Guodong glanced at his own son with disdain. He thought to himself:
“Truly, you get what you pay for. People like me can’t compete with others. But, well, he is still Xiao Si’s (his sister’s) nephew. He is my child, after all.”
On the other side, after hearing the story, Chu Minghai broke into a cold sweat. His hair stood on end!
No one knew better than him the structure of the house at the forest station. The beam was directly above the bed. If it had collapsed, would he even still be alive?
He might not have died, but he would have been maimed for sure!
His wife had just given birth to their daughter. If something had happened to him, what would they do? What would this family do?
Lin Shufen also felt a lingering fear, gripping her daughter’s little blanket tightly.
But since her husband was standing safely before her now, she could calm down and think things through.
She remembered a passage from the book about her husband: “Chu Minghai was handsome, tall, but unfortunately, in his youth, he lost both of his legs in a house collapse accident, and as a result, his body was weak for a long time…”
She had thought that her arrival had changed her husband’s fate, but she never expected this to still happen.
It was also her fault for being careless and neglecting such an important event.
Fortunately, her daughter had cried earlier that morning.
Wait…
Lin Shufen lowered her head and curiously looked at her daughter, who had just finished drinking milk. The little one was energetically punching the air, seemingly fighting with it.
Was it because of her daughter? Now that she thought about it, it seemed as if her daughter had some sort of premonition.
She kissed her daughter’s cheek with immense gratitude, “Thank you, darling. You were the one who protected Daddy.”
Chu Linyu grinned, “You’re welcome, Mama! Who would have thought that I really helped Daddy avoid danger!”
Chu Minghai felt a rush of emotion. He went over to the kang (heated bed) to hug his wife but realized that she was already curled up with their daughter.
The memory hit him all at once—yes, it was his daughter who wouldn’t let him leave this morning!
It was his daughter who had saved his life!
Tears surged uncontrollably in his eyes.
He gently hugged his wife and daughter, kissing his wife and giving several kisses on his daughter’s little forehead.
After that, he buried his head in his daughter’s blanket, trembling as he said, “Thank you, my little treasure. Thank you for saving our family.”
Chu Linyu, wrapped in her parents’ embrace, felt the overwhelming love and gratitude from her father and was so excited.
Though unable to speak, she cooperated by responding with a series of “Mm, mm, oh, oh” sounds. “It’s nothing, Daddy, you’re my daddy, of course I’ll protect you!”
Finally, she gave her father a sweet kiss, which made Chu Minghai’s eyes shine with emotion, choking up with tears.
Lin Shufen, holding their daughter with one arm and stroking her husband’s hair with the other, quietly soaked in this warm moment.
She thought to herself, who could have imagined that the emotionless, lonely, and solitary disabled scientist in the book, when he was young, was also a man full of emotions who shed tears for love?
Lin Guodong watched the scene in front of him, instinctively scratching his head, confused.
He didn’t know what had happened in the East Room that morning. He had only assumed that his mother was letting her son-in-law rest at home for the day out of sympathy.
Lin Shufen noticed Lin Guodong’s confusion and explained the reason to him.
Lin Feng, who had been eavesdropping, stared with wide eyes in shock.
He quickly crawled over to his uncle and, in a reverent manner, took Chu Linyu’s little hand and pressed it to his forehead.
“Little sister, I’ve already noticed you’re no ordinary child. Even with this ugly little face, you have an irresistible charm, and you’ve charmed everyone in the house. Truly remarkable. You’ve got good luck, no doubt. From now on, you must protect me. If you feel that I’m in trouble, cry and don’t let me leave the house, okay?”
“You little rascal, looking for a beating, huh?”
Lin Guodong glared at him, clearly irritated. He knew that this troublemaker would never behave, and sure enough, he was causing a ruckus again. Angrily, he didn’t care about anyone else and grabbed his shoe to slap him.
Lin Feng, having learned from experience, quickly let go of Chu Linyu’s hand and rolled back into the heated bed, accidentally bumping into Lin Zheng.
Lin Zheng frowned, realizing there were more people in the room and that the mood wasn’t quite normal.
However, it didn’t seem to be a big deal, so he returned to doing his exercises.
Seeing his furious uncle, he quickly kissed his little sister on the cheek before going back to his place and resuming his work…
Lin Shufen glanced around at the people in the room and couldn’t help but shake her head. What a bunch of oddballs in my family.
