Chapter 73: Have Some Candy Instead
Late at night, inside the car.
“Mr. Shen, the lady has been sent to the hospital,” the driver said.
Shen Yu’s eyes darkened, “What did the doctor say?”
“Stomach cramps, caused by not paying attention to diet,” the driver told Shen Yu truthfully, relaying what the doctor had said.
This was the first time he had seen Shen Yu so concerned about a woman, and this woman seemed to have never appeared in his life before. He couldn’t help but be curious.
Shen Yu’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, his emotions were unclear, his voice was cold, without any warmth, “Go back.”
It was really ridiculous. After three years, she had actually made herself so miserable.
His thoughts drifted back to three years ago.
He came from a wealthy family, and his parents had paved the way for his future, but he chose to go to a vocational college.
He was arrogant and dissolute, smoking, drinking, and hanging out with his friends all day long, not doing anything productive.
He remembered the first time he saw Yang Ke. He was leaning against the wall of the hallway, smoking. It was class time.
She was late for class and rushed up the stairs. Her long black hair cascaded over her shoulders, and she was holding several books in her arms. The wind blew through her hair, and strands of hair fluttered. The sunlight shone on her, adding a touch of softness.
She was pure and lively.
He wasn’t unfamiliar with Yang Ke. She was the recognized school beauty, and the school forum was full of posts about her. She was the girl every boy wanted to chase.
As she passed by him, Yang Ke was choked by the strong smell of smoke and coughed violently.
She looked at him questioningly, as if to say, “It’s class time, why aren’t you in the classroom?”
His gaze also fell on Yang Ke, but it only lingered for a few seconds. He ignored her gaze, lowered his head, and continued to smoke.
Yang Ke didn’t stop. She walked a few steps with her books, as if she had made a big decision, and turned back to look at him.
Then she walked up to him, her palm open in front of him, with a pink, laser-paper-wrapped candy lying in her palm. She smiled sweetly, “Classmate, smoking is harmful to your health. Have some candy instead.”
He looked at Yang Ke in confusion. She was already late for class, yet she was wasting time on a stranger. He didn’t understand, so he casually asked, “Not going to class?”
Yang Ke winked at him, “It’s okay, I’m already late.”
He didn’t say anything else, nor did he take the candy from her palm. They just looked at each other.
As if she had waited too long, Yang Ke directly stuffed the candy into his hand and left in a hurry.
As she left, her voice echoed in the hallway, “Remember to smoke less!”
He remembered that he had smiled at the candy in his hand.
He just didn’t expect that her approach was a conspiracy, with a purpose, not the coincidence he had imagined.
In the past three years, whenever he thought of her, it was with hatred, but when he saw her squatting on the ground with a pale face, he didn’t want to care.
He clearly only hated her, but he couldn’t leave her alone on the side of the road.
Three years had passed, and his heart was still stirred by her appearance.
In the past three years, he had been immersed in the bright lights and nightlife. It wasn’t so much that he liked the excitement, but rather that he was punishing himself, or perhaps he wanted to use those women to forget her.
But she had already gone abroad. Why did she come back?
She was like poison. The more he wanted to forget her, the deeper she sank into his bones.
——
The next day, Yang Ke had just walked out of her neighborhood when a gentle woman walked towards her. She was well-maintained and looked like she was in her thirties.
Yang Ke stopped, her eyelashes fluttered slightly, and then she curled her lips into a polite and distant smile, “Auntie.”
“Let’s talk?”
Yang Ke nodded.
The person was Shen Yu’s mother, Qin Qiu.
In a coffee shop, Yang Ke and Qin Qiu sat opposite each other.
“How have you been in the past three years abroad?” Qin Qiu asked, ordering two cups of coffee.
“I’ve been fine.” Yang Ke nodded obediently.
Qin Qiu could see that she was a little nervous, so she smiled, “Don’t be nervous. I just wanted to chat with you casually.”
Her gaze fell on Yang Ke. She hadn’t changed much over the years. She was still the same as before, “Have you seen Shen Yu?”
Yang Ke nodded, “Yes, Auntie, don’t worry, I won’t go after him.”
“Little Ke, don’t misunderstand.” Qin Qiu sighed softly, “I just wanted to tell you, you’re both mature enough now. Shen Yu is also successful in his career and stable enough. I can also see that he has never forgotten you in all these years. If you want to be together, I don’t object. I will wish you happiness.”
Yang Ke was stunned for a moment. She looked at the person in front of her in disbelief, “Auntie, I…”
Qin Qiu continued, “I never objected to you being together. Three years ago, it wasn’t your fault, it was Shen Yu. He was arrogant and dissolute, smoking, drinking, fighting, and messing around in school. He had no responsibility or sense of duty. I think your family wouldn’t agree to you being with someone like him.”
She had never looked down on Yang Ke. Yang Ke was an excellent student, obedient and sensible. She liked her very much, and she never regretted sending Yang Ke abroad for further studies.
Yang Ke was shocked. She had always thought it was because of her family background, that she and Shen Yu were not a good match.
Now that Qin Qiu had confessed to her, her heart was touched.
Qin Qiu smiled. She was an experienced person, and she could naturally see what Yang Ke was thinking, “Are you thinking about whether you’re a good match?”
Yang Ke nodded.
“Actually, I don’t care about whether you’re a good match or not. To be arrogant, the Shen family doesn’t need to rely on anyone.” Qin Qiu smiled gently.
“Think about it carefully. When you’ve figured it out, call me, and I’ll make arrangements.”
After saying that, Qin Qiu left, leaving Yang Ke alone, sitting there in a daze.
Three years had passed. Shen Yu probably didn’t have any feelings for her anymore. Even if he did, it would only be hatred.
Yesterday, he sent her to the hospital. It must have been because he felt sorry for her, or maybe it was because he remembered that they were classmates.
She recalled that rainy night. She held an umbrella and said the harshest words to him, stepping on his pride and arrogance.
That night, he stood in the rain, his hands hanging limply at his sides, his eyes bloodshot.
He didn’t move, letting the rain pour down on him.
In the end, she didn’t give Shen Yu another glance. She turned and left directly. She held the umbrella tightly, her knuckles turning white. She forced back her heartache and left without looking back.
The next day, she packed her bags, deleted all of Shen Yu’s contact information, boarded the plane, and left the country.
Later, she saw on the trending topics that Shen Yu had inherited the Shen Group and became a leader among young people.
He was successful in his career, never making any mistakes at work, and became an elite in the business world.
In the past three years abroad, she had been paying attention to the news in China, especially about a certain person.
She admitted that she couldn’t forget him. She had never been able to forget that arrogant and dissolute boy.
But she could only see him on her phone or in her dreams.
She made a decision. She wanted to make one last effort, even if the outcome wasn’t what she wanted, at least she wouldn’t have any regrets.
