Chapter 30: The Black Wind Stronghold was truly poor—only one chest of silver to its name.
Wang Shun didn’t understand why they didn’t just kill those people on the road. Why wait until they got to the stronghold?
But he quickly understood—she wanted the jade artifacts.
After Su Wan came out of the treasure vault, he jumped in. Only then did he realize how poor the Black Wind Stronghold really was. All they left him was a small chest of silver.
Wang Shun silently hugged the chest of silver as he walked out, thinking that after working hard all night, at least the silver should be his. But as soon as he stepped into the main hall, he heard Su Wan say:
“Mother, this Black Wind Stronghold is really poor. Just one small chest of silver left. Let’s divide it up.” Seeing Wang Shun frozen in place, Su Wan waved him over. “What are you standing there for? Come on!”
“You didn’t do much, so you’ll get a smaller share. Master did a lot—killed quite a few people—so she gets more.”
As Su Wan spoke, she began dividing the silver.
“One for you, one for me, one for Master, one for me, one for Mother, one for me… There, this is your share. Don’t say I’m stingy.”
Wang Shun looked at the shining pile of silver in front of Su Wan, then down at his own measly little pile, on the verge of tears.
Who taught her to divide silver like this?
Ji Sang twitched the corner of her mouth but said nothing. Su Fu was still in a daze, her mind lingering on the dangerous events from before.
At that moment, Ji Sang said, “Brother Wang, when we get back, you should ask your granduncle to come search the mountain. I think those stone ornaments are pretty valuable too.”
Wang Shun: ……
Ji Sang found a cart in the back courtyard, and after much effort, they made it down the mountain just as dawn broke.
With just a look from Su Wan, Ji Sang stomped hard on Master He. His voice was merciless as he declared, “Collaborating with bandits and harming the people—death!”
“Ahhh—!”
Ji Sang swung his longsword and severed the tendons in Master He’s legs, leaving him completely unable to escape.
The four servants carrying boxes behind him were terrified. They dropped the boxes and fled.
Su Wan, curious about what was in the boxes, skipped forward and opened one. Seeing the glimmering silver, her eyes lit up. “Mine. All mine.” With just a thought, she collected all the silver inside.
She was overjoyed.
The boxes she had collected from the bandits’ den last night were at least ten times more than those of the Ning family. And now, she had gotten her hands on two more—how could she not be thrilled?
Just as Su Wan was thinking about sneaking into the He family’s storeroom for a peek, Wang Shun arrived with the fat precinct chief.
“He Youyong, you bastard! How dare you collude with bandits and oppress the people. You’re finished!” The fat precinct chief stormed over, furious, his beard bristling and eyes wide.
When he got closer, he gave He Youyong a hard kick—right on the wound Ji Sang had made earlier. He Youyong howled in agony like a pig being slaughtered.
“What are you all standing around for? Go search the place!” After giving his orders, the fat precinct chief turned and bowed with a smile to Ji Sang. “Hero Ji, you’ve helped me once again. I don’t even know how to thank you. May I invite you to the precinct for a short visit?”
In his eyes, everything had been Ji Sang’s doing. He assumed Ji Sang had taken a liking to Su Fu, which explained why he was staying with the Su family.
He didn’t even glance at Su Wan the entire time.
“Sir, we’ve found two empty boxes at the entrance,” one of the precinct officers reported.
Still groaning in pain, Master He was stunned when he heard they were empty. “Impossible! That’s impossible! I clearly packed over a thousand taels of silver in there! How could they be empty?”
Thinking of how Master He had tried to use his life to threaten his own uncle, Wang Shun got angry again and started kicking him even harder.
Master He had no idea what was going on and shouted, “They’re not empty! They’re really not empty!” Then, realizing that the entire room full of rare treasures had vanished, he shrieked, “Ghosts! There must be ghosts!”
No one paid attention to his hysteria.
After politely declining the fat precinct chief’s invitation, Ji Sang left with Su Wan in a carriage.
Instead of returning to the general store, they headed straight for Qinghe Village.
Su Fu and Su Wan had not returned home the entire night, and the Su family hadn’t slept either. They feared that the mother and daughter had been taken by bandits. The old madam of the Su family was sobbing bitterly in her room.
“Husband, we can’t just sit around and wait any longer,” Xia Xian said angrily, having come up with a plan.
Su Mingshan’s eyes were bloodshot as he turned to Xia Xian and asked, “What do you plan to do?”
Xia Xian glanced at the elderly and children in the room, her eyes red as she said, “Isn’t Ning Yumo trying to kill all the witnesses? Then let’s make a big scene—make it so big that everyone knows about it. By then, will he really be able to kill every single witness?”
“If he won’t let us live, then we can’t let him have peace either.”
As soon as she said this, the elderly couple immediately voiced their support. “Yes, let’s make a big scene, let everyone know. Let’s see if Ning Yumo really has the power to kill them all.”
But doing this would also put the entire Su family in an even more dangerous situation.
Just then, the sound of wheels could be heard outside. The few people exchanged glances and rushed out the door, only to see Su Fu getting down from the carriage and then turning back to carry Su Wan.
“Uncle, Aunt, Sister Yao.” Su Wan’s cheerful voice rang in their ears.
The Su family members were overjoyed, crying tears of relief.
“Sister, Wanwan, where did you go last night? You nearly scared us to death.” Xia Xian quickly stepped forward and hugged Su Fu and Su Wan tightly, tears streaming from her eyes.
The two elderly people who came out after them were also in tears. “It’s good you’re back, it’s good you’re back.”
Su Xinyao clung to Su Fu’s leg and called out in her childish voice, “Auntie, Yaoyao was worried about you.”
“Big sister, Yaoyao was worried about you too.” Little Su Xinyao, young as she was, knew to be fair with her affections.
Su Wan took Su Xinyao’s small hand and walked toward the courtyard, saying as she walked, “It was wrong of me to make Yaoyao worry. I promise it won’t happen again.”
Meanwhile, Su Fu recounted the perilous events of the previous night, leaving the whole family pale with fright.
