Chapter 25: Breakfast Together and a Visit to the Bookstore
Although the college entrance examination was over, Tang Feng’s biological clock had clearly not adjusted yet.
He woke up from his sleep before six o’clock.
He got up, washed up simply, and then walked out of his home.
At this moment, the residential area was very quiet.
Tang Feng occasionally encountered one or two elderly people walking around the neighborhood.
He smiled and greeted them, then walked out of the residential area.
He did not wander around the vicinity but headed straight towards Su Xiaoli’s place.
Unexpectedly, halfway there, he saw a familiar figure.
He even doubted he was hallucinating.
However, he eventually confirmed that the person he saw was Su Xiaoli.
Su Xiaoli, upon seeing Tang Feng, also froze on the spot.
She too had come out for a stroll in the morning, hoping to bump into Tang Feng.
To her surprise, they really did run into each other!
“Su Xiaoli!” Tang Feng greeted her proactively.
“Why are you here?” Su Xiaoli’s face was full of surprise.
“I was just out for a walk and didn’t expect to run into you here,” Tang Feng responded.
“Have you eaten yet?” Su Xiaoli changed the subject.
“Not yet,” Tang Feng replied truthfully.
“I’ll treat you to breakfast,” Su Xiaoli offered.
“Let me treat you instead,” Tang Feng said, instinctively reaching for his trouser pocket.
He then realized his pockets were empty, not a single coin in them.
He felt somewhat embarrassed for a moment.
“It’s okay! We don’t need to be so formal with each other. It’s just breakfast; it doesn’t matter who pays,” Su Xiaoli said, and headed towards a nearby breakfast stall.
Tang Feng hurriedly followed.
Although he had no money in his pockets, he was definitely going to eat this breakfast.
“What would you like to eat?” Once Tang Feng entered, Su Xiaoli asked with a smile.
“I’ll have two dough sticks and a bowl of tofu pudding,” Tang Feng answered.
“Is that all? Do you want to add a tea egg?” Su Xiaoli suggested.
“No,” Tang Feng shook his head, saying, “This is enough.”
Seeing this, Su Xiaoli did not insist.
She ordered a pork and green onion stuffed pancake for herself, along with a bowl of millet porridge.
Soon, the stall owner brought Su Xiaoli’s breakfast to their table.
Su Xiaoli took a sip of her millet porridge, then picked up the pancake and slowly ate it.
In contrast, Tang Feng dipped his dough sticks into the tofu pudding, eating with relish.
Su Xiaoli couldn’t help but laugh seeing him gobble down his food.
After Tang Feng finished eating, Su Xiaoli hesitated for a moment, then broke her pancake in half, offering him the half she hadn’t bitten into.
“What are you doing?” Tang Feng was clearly startled.
“I can’t eat this much. If you don’t help me finish it, it will go to waste,” Su Xiaoli replied.
Hearing this, Tang Feng took the pancake without saying another word and quickly finished it off.
“Tang Feng, are you going to Xinhua Bookstore today?” Su Xiaoli swallowed the pancake in her mouth and changed the subject.
“Yes! Aren’t you going too?” Tang Feng countered.
“Since that’s the case, let’s go straight there after we finish eating,” Su Xiaoli decided.
“Do you not need to tell Uncle Su?” Tang Feng suggested.
“No need,” Su Xiaoli shook her head, saying, “I already told him when I left.”
“But Xinhua Bookstore isn’t open yet. If we go now, we’ll just have to wait. How about you come to the supermarket with me?” Tang Feng offered.
“What for?” Su Xiaoli was puzzled.
“You treated me to breakfast, so I thought I’d get you some snacks in return. Otherwise, I’d feel bad,” Tang Feng answered.
“Do we really need to keep score like this? If you keep this up, I won’t eat with you in the future,” Su Xiaoli pouted, pretending to be angry.
“Don’t be like that!” Tang Feng quickly waved his hands, somewhat embarrassed, “I just wanted to go back and ask my mom for some money.”
“And you were saying you’d treat me to breakfast?” Su Xiaoli rolled her eyes at him.
Tang Feng just chuckled, not saying anything.
“You might not have money, but I do! My dad knew I was going to Xinhua Bookstore, so he gave me three hundred yuan. The books you buy can go on my tab,” Su Xiaoli volunteered.
“That doesn’t seem right. You’re treating me to breakfast, and now you’re also buying books for me at Xinhua Bookstore. I really feel bad about this,” Tang Feng showed difficulty accepting.
Although he was tempted by the offer of a free meal, as a man, he couldn’t just let the other party pay for everything.
“Enough! Don’t be so polite with me! You’ve tutored me before,” Su Xiaoli said, then stood up and went to the stall owner to pay the bill.
Then she waved at Tang Feng.
The two left the breakfast stall together.
The stall owner watched their departing figures, a hint of a smile on her lips.
The love of young people is truly enviable.
Unknowingly, Tang Feng and Su Xiaoli arrived at the entrance of Xinhua Bookstore.
Perhaps because the middle and elementary school students were not yet on holiday, and it wasn’t the weekend, Xinhua Bookstore wasn’t very crowded.
Tang Feng headed straight for the bestseller display.
He saw “The Legend of the Condor Heroes,” “Wolf Totem,” “Transparent Like Crystal,” and “Three Body Problem.”
Tang Feng looked at these familiar titles, a smile appearing on his lips.
He opened these books and flipped through a few pages.
He could even recite some of the content from memory.
“What are you looking at?” Su Xiaoli came over.
“Just browsing,” Tang Feng put the book he was holding back in its place.
“Do you want to buy these books?” Su Xiaoli asked, picking up one of them.
“No,” Tang Feng shook his head, “I’ve already read these.”
“Then what do you want to buy?” Su Xiaoli was curious.
“I want to buy a set of ‘Ordinary World,'” Tang Feng answered.
“Lu Yao’s ‘Ordinary World’? I’ve heard of it but haven’t read it yet,” Su Xiaoli became interested.
“It’s really good. It’s worth reading several times when you’re free, to get a sense of the era our parents lived through,” Tang Feng said, his eyes fixed ahead, his mind seemingly elsewhere.
“In that case, let’s buy a set. After you finish, you can lend it to me,” Su Xiaoli decided.
“Okay,” Tang Feng nodded.
They soon found “Ordinary World” on the shelves, along with two other books by Lu Yao.
One was “Life,” and the other was “Morning Starts at Noon.”
Tang Feng did not hesitate at all and took these books off the shelf.
Su Xiaoli did not stop him.
“These books are enough for me. What do you want to buy? I can help recommend some,” Tang Feng asked, somewhat embarrassedly smiling.
“I want to buy a set of Sanmao’s books. I read two of her books during school, and they were really good,” Su Xiaoli replied.
“Sanmao was indeed talented, though her ending was quite tragic,” Tang Feng couldn’t help but shake his head.
