Chapter 5: The Principal’s Home Visit
“Xiaoli, I’ve finished the test paper. Could you mark it for me?” Tang Feng said, poking her waist with his finger.
Su Xiaoli glared at him, then focused her attention on the last major question.
At that moment, her heart was racing.
Fortunately, Tang Feng did not disappoint her and got the last big question right!
She was so happy she almost cried.
Tang Feng’s performance truly surprised her.
“Su Xiaoli, from now on, you are my girlfriend,” Tang Feng declared, unexpectedly kissing her on the lips.
Su Xiaoli’s face turned bright red.
How could Tang Feng do this!
He had taken her first kiss without her permission!
It was infuriating!
“Tang Feng, were you really hiding your abilities before?” Su Xiaoli was still somewhat in disbelief.
“Of course! If you don’t believe me, you can give me a harder test paper! Besides, this afternoon in the office, teachers from all subjects already tested me,” Tang Feng spoke with confidence.
“How did the tests go?” Su Xiaoli was eager to know the answer.
“Except for losing one point in the essay, the rest were full marks,” Tang Feng answered.
“Why did you lose a point in the essay?” Su Xiaoli became even more curious.
“Probably to prevent me from becoming arrogant.”
“You’re really full of yourself!” Su Xiaoli was quite speechless.
“I’m telling the truth. It’s getting late; I’ll walk you home,” Tang Feng offered.
“Okay!” Su Xiaoli nodded and started packing her bag.
When she was ready, she noticed Tang Feng was empty-handed, carrying nothing.
“Aren’t you going to review your lessons at home?” Su Xiaoli was puzzled.
“Do I still need to review with my current abilities?” Tang Feng couldn’t help but laugh.
“You’re such an egomaniac!” Su Xiaoli said and left the classroom.
Tang Feng quickly followed her.
As they exited the teaching building, it was already dusk.
The setting sun stretched their shadows long.
They rode their bikes away from the school.
Following his promise, Tang Feng escorted Su Xiaoli home.
Upon reaching downstairs, Su Xiaoli invited him, “Do you want to come up for a while?”
“Are your parents not home?” Tang Feng’s eyes lit up.
“Xiaoli, who are you talking to up there!” A shiny head popped out of a window upstairs.
“Uncle Su!” Tang Feng hurriedly greeted.
“Tang Feng, the college entrance exams are coming up. Stay away from my Xiaoli! Do you hear me?” Su Gang’s tone rose by several octaves.
Seeing his fierce look, Tang Feng waved goodbye to Su Xiaoli and rode away.
Su Xiaoli watched his back, feeling a bit dazed.
“Xiaoli, why are you still standing there? Come up quickly!” Su Gang called out.
Su Xiaoli pushed her bike into the storage room and then went upstairs.
After a mad dash, Tang Feng also arrived home.
His family’s financial situation was not great.
Both parents were laid-off workers who ran a small supermarket at the entrance of their community to make ends meet.
The business was always lukewarm.
Approaching the supermarket, Tang Feng saw his father cooling off outside and greeted him.
“Why are you coming back so late today? Have you been to the internet cafe playing games again?” His father looked serious.
“No.” Tang Feng shook his head, “I was studying with Su Xiaoli in the classroom.”
“Su Xiaoli? The top student in your class?” His father’s attitude softened upon hearing her name.
“Yes! The college entrance exams are soon, so I asked her for some tutoring,” Tang Feng sat down next to his father.
His father didn’t say anything, just glanced at the sun.
“Dad, what do you mean by that?” Tang Feng was confused.
“I thought the sun had risen from the west today. If you had your current realization half a year earlier, maybe you would have a chance at a good university! Now, with just over ten days left until the exams, there’s no chance,” his father said, shaking his head in disappointment.
Every parent hopes their child will succeed, and Tang Feng’s father also hoped his son would get into a good university and find a good job in the future.
At least not having to run a small supermarket like him.
“Dad, you have to have faith in me! This time I will make you and mom the envy of our relatives and friends!” Tang Feng’s eyes sparkled.
“If you can manage to get into a second-tier university, your mom and I will be satisfied! Wait, where’s your backpack?” his father noticed his empty hands.
“I left my backpack in the classroom,” Tang Feng answered.
“With that attitude, you dream of getting into a good university!” his father glared at him and entered the supermarket.
Tang Feng’s smile was tinged with bitterness.
At that moment, his mother approached from not far away.
“Feng, did you get into trouble?” His mother looked concerned.
“No!” Tang Feng shook his head.
“Your homeroom teacher called me, said he’s coming for a home visit tonight! Not just him, but also the school principal!” His mother stared at him, trying to discern the truth.
“The school principal? What does the homeroom teacher want to do?” Tang Feng frowned.
“You little rascal! Tell me honestly, what did you do?” His father burst out.
“I really didn’t do anything. Mom, give me your phone. I’ll call the homeroom teacher and ask what’s going on.”
His mother handed over the phone.
Tang Feng dialed the homeroom teacher’s number and called.
The call connected quickly.
Tang Feng turned on the speakerphone.
“Mr. He, my mom said you’re coming for a home visit tonight. My dad thinks I did something wrong. What are you coming to my house for?”
“Tang Feng, don’t get worked up. I was planning to test you again tomorrow to see how strong you really are. Somehow, Principal Fang found out about this and decided to visit your house tonight,” He Yong hurriedly explained.
“What does Principal Fang want at my house? Is he planning to test me there?” Tang Feng guessed.
“No.” He Yong shook his head, “Principal Fang has no other intentions; he just wants to see you.”
“Is it really that simple?” Tang Feng was skeptical.
“Really. If you don’t believe me, I can give you Principal Fang’s contact information.”
“No need. When are you coming?”
“Around 7 p.m.”
“At 7 p.m., my parents will still be at the store, so they probably won’t have time,” Tang Feng replied.
