Chapter 151: Incurring Romantic Entanglements
After hearing the familiar words from Earth, how could Long Qingyue not be excited?
Ye Wenxin’s heart also stirred with excitement, thinking she could finally fool her best friend. But when she turned her head, Long Qingyue had already resumed her noble elegance, with a hint of amusement in her eyes.
“So where is your brother now? Why does This Palace not know about such a person?”
“My brother went traveling; he won’t be back for three to five years.” Ye Wenxin presented the story she had already concocted. She noticed a hint of disappointment on Long Qingyue’s face, as if she regretted not being able to see ‘Ye Liangchen’ with her own eyes.
“Well, it’s not surprising. How could a male lead be content with ordinary life, staying in such a pigsty?” Long Qingyue sighed, stroking the sleeping black cat in her arms.
Ye Wenxin held back a laugh. Only Long Qingyue would dare to refer to the prestigious Azure Wings Sect as a pigsty. She tried to conceal her emotions, not wanting to arouse Long Qingyue’s suspicion.
Long Qingyue was skilled in manipulation, while Ye Wenxin was more straightforward in her thinking. In their psychological battles, Ye Wenxin always ended up on the losing side. But she believed that, with her current skills, she could at least confuse Long Qingyue for a few days.
With this in mind, Ye Wenxin smirked to herself but continued to inquire Long Qingyue respectfully.
“If Your Highness wishes to find my brother, it may require some effort.”
“Thank you for the information.” Long Qingyue smiled, but her gaze lingered on Ye Wenxin for a few seconds, maintaining her noble and aloof demeanor as a superior.
After a few seconds, just when Ye Wenxin thought Long Qingyue might keep her to further improve the favorability between them, Long Qingyue issued the order to leave. “Well, I have asked what I wanted to. You may leave now.”
This statement caught Ye Wenxin off guard. She could not believe Long Qingyue would let her, a transmigrator little sister, leave so easily. However, after a moment’s thought, Ye Wenxin realized that Long Qingyue was probably playing the long game. She followed Long Qingyue’s lead, bid her farewell, and quickly left the room.
She stepped out and, unsurprisingly, saw Xiao Zhang waiting over there.
Seeing Ye Wenxin come out, Xiao Zhang, wrapped up tightly from head to toe, immediately approached and asked, “Are you alright?”
“You’re thinking too badly of your mistress.” Ye Wenxin smiled as she watched Xiao Zhang’s worried expression, feeling warmth in her heart.
“You don’t understand Her Highness,” retorted Xiao Zhang, giving Ye Wenxin a glare. She then lightly patted her head and added sternly, “Even you shouldn’t speak ill of Her Highness like that!”
“Hmph, you’re really loyal,” grumbled Ye Wenxin, but she also felt it was a matter of fact.
For Xiao Zhang, or even for the entire Golden Age Dynasty, everything was thanks to the existence of Her Highness. If it were not for her, perhaps the dynasty would have declined long ago.
Ye Wenxin also thought about Xiao Zhang’s desire for freedom. If Xiao Zhang was willing, after Ye Wenxin finished playing this game with Long Qingyue, she would ask Long Qingyue to set Xiao Zhang free. Of course, this matter was still confidential, and for now, she was just the insignificant Ye Wenxin.
“Of course, that’s Her Highness, the Eldest Princess. Even if you’re jealous, you shouldn’t envy her. It’s a different kind of significance.” Xiao Zhang pinched Ye Wenxin’s cheek, smiling brightly, and did not shy away from their closeness.
“I am jealous, though. You get to spend every day with the very beautiful Eldest Princess.”
“You…” Xiao Zhang was a bit angry, but seeing Ye Wenxin’s expression, she knew the girl was just teasing. Her anger subsided, and she hugged Ye Wenxin around the shoulders, whispering, “If you had to choose between me and the Eldest Princess as a Dao companion, who would you choose?”
Ye Wenxin could not help but roll her eyes and say seriously, “Obviously, it would be the Eldest Princess.”
Inside the room, Long Qingyue’s lips curled slightly as she heard everything. The black cat in her arms seemed unhappy and meowed a few times. Long Qingyue made a shushing gesture to the cat and smiled, explaining to it, “Tonight is dark and windy, suitable for lovers, not for old friends.”
……
As the night grew deeper, Xiao Zhang escorted Ye Wenxin back into the room.
“I can’t stay away too long now that I’m the commander of the Secret Guards. Once Her Highness has some free time in the coming days, I’ll come to keep you company,” said Xiao Zhang to Ye Wenxin, looking at Baili Mu still sleeping soundly on the bed.
She wanted to stay by Ye Wenxin’s side, but duty called. Xiao Zhang was someone who kept her public and private matters separate, was upright and straightforward, and was even stubborn at times.
If not for that, she would not have bothered with Ye Wenxin’s nonsense earlier and cared about Ye Wenxin’s well-being now. It was precisely because she was such a gentle person that she could not bear to leave Ye Wenxin alone.
Ye Wenxin understood Xiao Zhang’s kindness, but she could not help feeling that there was a hint of emotion behind it. Even if it was faint, she could sense a sense of responsibility in Xiao Zhang’s eyes when Xiao Zhang looked at her.
“You really don’t have to take what we said when you were dying seriously.” Ye Wenxin could not help but bring up the old issue, feeling that if things continued like this, their relationship might deteriorate.
Just like Ling Jue, who at some point began to develop feelings for her.
She feared that Xiao Zhang might also become like this, or perhaps she already had.
“Promises are the foundation of one’s character, and it’s something my father always emphasized. A person may lack power, but they cannot lack integrity. I may not be able to pledge my allegiance to you, but I can entrust myself to you.” Xiao Zhang crouched in front of Ye Wenxin, holding her hands.
Her words were spoken with utmost sincerity, as if she were making a solemn vow to Ye Wenxin.
However, Xiao Zhang was a woman, and Ye Wenxin was also a woman. She could not help feeling that such a promise was overly ambiguous.
“I’ve been wanting to ask you, does ‘entrusting myself to you’ mean literally that, like engaging in intimate relations with me?” Ye Wenxin could not help but shudder. If it were before, she would never have thought of this in such a way.
But recently, she had begun to realize that she might have underestimated this world.
Xiao Zhang opened and closed her mouth, and finally nodded tacitly.
Entrusting herself to the other person was ultimately the only way she could think of, and it was also her most precious possession.
“But don’t you find it strange? Both of us are women.” Ye Wenxin could not help but continue to question, unable to understand why she had triggered such a strange storyline.
Could it be that she had taken away too many opportunities from the male lead and thus invited retribution? But this retribution seemed too sensual.
“Wenxin, do you think I’m beautiful?” Xiao Zhang still maintained her position, squatting in front of Ye Wenxin as if she were handling her most cherished treasure.
While promises were one thing, in reality, Xiao Zhang did have some feelings for Ye Wenxin.
These feelings were not born from the appearance of ‘Ye Liangchen’, they were feelings for Ye Wenxin. Xiao Zhang always felt that if it were Ye Wenxin, she would be willing to protect her for a lifetime.
But it seemed that her message was not getting through smoothly. Ye Wenxin seemed to misunderstand her meaning, which left Xiao Zhang feeling somewhat discouraged. Nevertheless, she could not help but actively press on.
Unlike ordinary women, Xiao Zhang lived among the Secret Guards, leading a life on the edge every day. They were more direct in their actions than others because if they missed their chance, the next meeting might be a farewell.
Xiao Zhang had to seize every opportunity to meet Ye Wenxin. She had to make the young girl in front of her understand that her feelings were not just empty words.
“Xiao Zhang, you’re very beautiful, just a little bit less than Her Highness.” Ye Wenxin smiled, trying to lighten the mood. But she sensed Xiao Zhang’s nervousness, as if she was facing the biggest choice of her life, and one wrong step could lead to regret.
Not understanding where these feelings came from, Ye Wenxin reluctantly expressed her true thoughts.
“Just a little less than Her Highness…haha…” Xiao Zhang paused, then burst into laughter, even letting go of Ye Wenxin’s hand and sitting beside her.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have pressured you too much… After all, you’re still just a child…” She leaned on Ye Wenxin’s side, murmuring to herself or perhaps emphasizing something to Ye Wenxin.
Ye Wenxin understood, but she could not reciprocate Xiao Zhang’s feelings.
“Don’t think too much, Xiao Zhang; it’s just a passing infatuation.” Ye Wenxin decided to reject her. Apart from not being interested in romance, Ye Wenxin’s feelings for Xiao Zhang were not enough to make her reciprocate.
In this world, there was absolutely no one who could truly make her fall in love. Ye Wenxin firmly held onto this belief in her heart, intending to reject Xiao Zhang more decisively to prevent the recurrence of any misunderstandings, lest it turn into another agreement situation like with Liu Churan and Ling Jue.
She was afraid—afraid of too many romantic entanglements, which might end up suffocating her.
“Passing infatuation? Maybe.” Xiao Zhang seemed to have thought of something, her attitude becoming even softer. Ye Wenxin watched as the crisis passed, but then heard Xiao Zhang continue, “Maybe in these few years, I can figure this out.”
“At this point, shouldn’t you be saying, ‘I will give up’?!'” Ye Wenxin could not help raising her voice, but seeing Baili Mu, who was asleep, react to the noise, she quickly lowered her voice, looking at Xiao Zhang in exasperation.
“Never. I’ll just consider you young and needing a few years to think it over.” Xiao Zhang slowly got up and resolutely walked towards the door.
Ye Wenxin was speechless. She even suspected that in a few years, a group of women would be waiting at her door to start a battle royale. Thinking of this, she hurriedly chased after Xiao Zhang and raised her voice, saying, “I really don’t have that intention, Xiao Zhang, I don’t like…”
But before she could finish her sentence, a slender jade hand was placed over her lips, silencing her.
