Release the Female Lead Ch. 28

Chapter 28: You Really Like Fairy Fengya

“I know. This Humble One won’t transform in front of anyone besides you.” Hei Tong promised obediently, and Ye Wenxin was quite gratified. Previously, she had failed in raising Liu Churan. This time, she was raising a spirit beast, and she definitely would not repeat the same mistake.

Ye Wenxin secretly vowed as the two walked through an alley. When they came out again, Ye Wenxin was a little girl once more, and Hei Tong had transformed into her original form. With just a light flap from her wings, they soared into the sky.

After flying for about half a day, Ye Wenxin finally reached the Azure Wings Sect with Hei Tong.

The Alchemy Workshop was as lively as ever, but there was no sign of Ling Jue. It was unclear whether she had heard news of Ye Wenxin’s disappearance and went to search in the backwoods, or she had not returned at all.

“That’s a rather big bird.”

“Hey, that bird seems to be carrying someone.”

Some people had noticed the shadow in the sky, raised their heads to look, and was met with a huge black bird, and the person carried on its back was naturally Ye Wenxin.

“Put me down when you land. If you throw me again, I’ll give you a taste of what it’s like to fall from the abyss with your wings bound.” Ye Wenxin still held a grudge about that time’s wonderful experience. Hei Tong, originally intending to just drop Ye Wenxin, froze in her movements, and then began to slowly descend.

In that instant, Hei Tong’s appearance attracted everyone present. A pill furnace produced an explosive sound, as if to celebrate Ye Wenxin’s return.

That sound scared Hei Tong somewhat, both of her feet clung to the wall, and she somewhat did not want to enter this bizarre Alchemy Workshop.

Ye Wenxin took the chance to jump down from Hei Tong, looking around at the awed Azure Wings Sect disciples, searching for someone she was familiar with.

As she walked among the crowd, she caught sight of Long Qing’er en route to alchemy. She probably did not have the time to answer the question of Ling Jue’s whereabouts.

“Do you know where Ling Jue went?” Ye Wenxin had no choice but to grab a random person and ask. Unfortunately, this disciple had been focused on refining pills and knew nothing.

“Teacher Ling was just summoned by the Sect Master to the Great Hall.” A female disciple who had failed to refine pills answered Ye Wenxin’s inquiry. Ye Wenxin thanked her and planned to first go find Ling Jue to report she was safe and sound.

She turned and headed towards the main gate, but was met with Hei Tong’s huge figure still huddled up over there, big round eyes looking at her, seeming reluctant to leave.

She was unsure if this Hei Tong had fallen for her, or was worried she would not be able to handle those Azure Wings Sect old geezers.

“Little Hei, you should come with me.” Ye Wenxin thought of her current predicament for a moment, and eventually climbed onto Hei Tong’s back again. The two flew towards the Azure Wings Sect’s Great Hall.

The Azure Wings Sect’s Great Hall was located at the peak, surrounded by sheer cliffs, and difficult to reach unless one knew swordflight. Ye Wenxin naturally could fly on a sword, however, as a Qi Refining stage newbie, knowing this third-tier skill would be too conspicuous.

Hei Tong’s existence just so happened to dispel everyone’s suspicions of her, and also allowed Ye Wenxin to make good use of her.

“Hei Tong, no matter what I say later, you aren’t allowed to speak. Understand?” Considering the fact that Hei Tong only just gained human form, her mind yet complete, Hei Tong opening her mouth to speak would just complicate things even more.

Although Hei Tong was doubtful, she still gave a few syllables in agreement, and then leaned over to fly towards where the Great Hall was.

Swaggering about in such a manner, completely indifferent to others’ gazes.

Other people seemed used to Hei Tong’s licentiousness, until they noticed a person sitting on Hei Tong’s back, and finally made a little commotion.

“Isn’t that Miss Wenxin who was taken away by Lord Hei some days ago?”

“You’re right. It looks like Lord Hei knows this Miss Wenxin is talented, so didn’t play her to death.”

Two elders were talking idly about Ye Wenxin who was sitting atop Hei Tong. Hei Tong was rather displeased and instinctively wanted to let out a cursing sound, but then she felt a chill around her neck.

Looking again, Ye Wenxin, who had just been calm and composed debating with herself how to trick the old geezers, now had a deathly pale face. Her body was trembling incessantly, as if she had experienced some inhuman torture before.

“Wenxin, are you alright?” Ling Jue came out from the chaotic crowd and intended to approach Ye Wenxin, but Hei Tong made a crow sound to scare Ling Jue away, not letting her close.

“Indeed, this time it falls upon Miss Wenxin to be treated as a toy by Lord Hei. No need to be overly concerned, Young Master Ling, this raven is the sect founder’s spirit pet and guardian of our Azure Wings Sect. *Ahem*… Though it may be mischievous, it harbors no ill intent, I assure you.” The Sect Master of the Azure Wings Sect started babbling nonsense placidly. Ye Wenxin admired this old man’s shamelessness even more.

Hei Tong’s degree of tomfoolery could no longer be called as ‘playing’, if she had not used her Flower Burial skills in the backwoods last time, she would have been torn to pieces by Hei Tong’s claws.

“*Sobbing*, Big Brother Ling.” The more Ye Wenxin thought about, the more aggrieved she felt, and she pinched her own thigh with all her might, causing tears to begin falling instantly.

“I’m sorry, Wenxin, Big Brother didn’t watch over you properly, so you were taken away by this thieving crow.” Ling Jue blamed herself. She never thought that while she was down the mountain for a few days, Ye Wenxin had not been bullied by the Azure Wings Sect disciples, but instead was tormented by a crow for so long.

“Look at you, you’ve lost weight.” Ling Jue felt even more distressed. If there was not someone beside her, she would have already hugged Ye Wenxin and cried.

But now, she was still the Peerless Gentleman, and not Ye Wenxin’s one and only big sister.

“*Sobbing*, this crow is too cruel…” Ye Wenxin began to recount Hei Tong’s crimes. Hei Tong understood human language, and naturally knew Ye Wenxin was talking bad about her.

Regardless of what had or had not been done, as if she had endured a thousand cuts, Ye Wenxin shamelessly dumped everything on Hei Tong.

Even if Ye Wenxin had treated her well recently, Hei Tong also felt the need to remind Ye Wenxin who was the boss in the end. Thinking this, Hei Tong took one step forward, intending to teach Ye Wenxin a lesson, but then she sensed a murderous intent.

Looking again, Ling Jue was defending Ye Wenxin with one hand, while her other hand was pointing a folding fan at Hei Tong, unleashing intimidating pressure from her body, “Lord Hei, if you dare to lay your hand on Little Sister Wenxin, it won’t just be you, this Young Master would flatten the Azure Wings Sect!”

It was said that “With one’s hair bound up, she becomes a beauty in anger”1, but no one could have imagined that the usually refined Ling Jue, when incensed, would be so terrifying. Not only Hei Tong, even the Sect Master and elders could feel the oppressive aura emanating from Ling Jue.

“Big Brother Ling, I’m fine. She’s probably just saying goodbye to me.” Seeing the situation was going in a strange direction, Ye Wenxin hastily smoothed things over, only then did Ling Jue’s expression improved a little.

“It truly didn’t make things difficult for you? If it did, you should say so. Big Brother Ling would deal with it for you.” Ling Jue’s expression softened a little, but looking at Ye Wenxin’s hapless state, she could not help but feel that this beast Hei Tong was even worse than a beast.

“We had some misunderstandings in the beginning, but later on I became good friends with Little Hei.” Ye Wenxin continued to placate. She knew Ling Jue sincerely cared about her, and it was precisely this sincerity which brought about a greater sense of guilt in Ye Wenxin.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief listening to this conversation. Despite claims that Medicine King Valley currently lacked the means to eliminate the Azure Wings Sect, due to the nature of the alchemist profession, Medicine King Valley’s disciples were not weak.

Seeing Ye Wenxin handle the situation so gracefully, the crowd’s goodwill towards her increased slightly.

However, Ye Wenxin did not have the slightest intention of garnering goodwill. Her mind was filled with only one question.

“Big Brother Ling, what’re all these people doing here?” Ye Wenxin actually wanted to know why there was no sign of Fairy Fengya despite this many people gathered here.

But if she said that aloud, people would discover Ye Wenxin’s fixation on Fairy Fengya, so she changed to a more tactful way of asking.

“It’s for the upcoming recruitment event. Isn’t Miss Wenxin intending on taking part?” An elder who was quite familiar with Ye Wenxin gave an answer while stroking his goatee.

“I see. Then would it be alright if I stay and listen?” Ye Wenxin had already guessed they had gathered for this reason, but she did not expect her timing to be so good.

“Hehe, we’re already done discussing it. However, if Miss Wenxin is willing to join our Azure Sky School, I might consider revealing the exam contents to you,” a school master joked.

The relationship between Ye Wenxin and Ling Jue was extraordinary, naturally making her the primary target for recruitment by the school masters.

“No, I only want Fairy Fengya. By the way, since this is a recruitment discussion, why haven’t I seen Fairy Fengya? Don’t tell me she’s still in closed door training?” Ye Wenxin changed the topic without batting an eye, however, this was what she had wanted to ask all along.

She did not know why, but she always felt that she was playing hide-and-seek with Fairy Fengya.

They had already missed each other once, and now it seemed they had missed the time to meet again.

“Junior Sister Fengya resumed closed door training after the meeting ended.” One of the elders replied with a smile. Ye Wenxin’s originally smiling face darkened, her teeth gritted in anger.

“Again?!”

Ye Wenxin felt like she was going crazy. She and Fairy Fengya missed each other in passing two times. She was just the world’s number one beauty, why was it so hard to meet her!

Ye Wenxin’s heart was on the verge of collapsing, she almost started cursing Fairy Fengya in front of everyone but held it back, her facial expression subsequently returning to normal.

‘I’m so mad, I think I’m going into Qi Deviation again.’

Only this sentence kept echoing endlessly in Ye Wenxin’s hollow heart, as if she was recalling the fear that had dominated her over the years under Fairy Fengya’s enchanting beauty.

Nobody knew of Ye Wenxin’s inner struggle, only laughing and teasing Ye Wenxin’s persistence towards Fairy Fengya.

“Miss Wenxin really likes Fairy Fengya.”

Ye Wenxin smiled faintly and did not deny it.

She indeed liked Fairy Fengya very much, so much so she wanted to immediately seek out the place where Fairy Fengya was doing closed door training to cut her down.

  1. This quote is from “Song of the Pipa”, describing how a woman’s appearance changes when she is angry. The act of tying up her hair, often associated with preparation or control, accentuates her beauty even in a state of anger. It suggests that even when expressing negative emotions, her grace and allure remain intact, highlighting the complexity and depth of her character. ↩︎
