Chapter 399: Blame It On the Buns 2 (2nd Update)
Ye Wenxin kept telling herself that she would stop after just one taste, but she found herself unknowingly drawn in further as the delicate tips stood up more prominently, almost inviting her to explore. However, she eventually pulled back, feeling she had gone a bit too far this time. She helped Gu Xiangsi straighten her clothes and then, as if nothing had happened, moved back toward the edge of the bed to continue sleeping…
About an hour later, Gu Xiangsi turned over, her back facing Ye Wenxin. Slowly, she opened her eyes, her face full of disbelief. She looked down at herself, as if suddenly realizing that Ye Wenxin might have some interest in her after all.
Although this newfound interest was puzzling to Gu Xiangsi, the recent surge in love rivals troubled her. However, Ye Wenxin’s behavior had given Gu Xiangsi a boost of confidence. If she played her cards right, perhaps Ye Wenxin could truly be hers.
With a subtle smile, Gu Xiangsi loosened her inner garments again, letting her dudou slip even more, and then moved back in, hoping that Ye Wenxin would have another taste…
Two hours passed, then four, until dawn finally arrived, but Gu Xiangsi never got her second chance. She didn’t have a high cultivation level, so staying up late was torturous for her. Yet, with the crisis in Yangzhou City, she forced herself out of bed, only to find Ye Wenxin observing the peach blossom tattoo on her back.
“Sis, why are there more peach blossoms on your back?” Gu Xiangsi yawned widely as she stepped barefoot onto the floor, just to take a few more looks at Ye Wenxin’s beautiful back.
Ye Wenxin didn’t avoid Gu Xiangsi’s stare, glanced at the sleep-deprived girl and replied, “Maybe it’s because my cultivation has advanced again.”
As she spoke, Ye Wenxin adjusted her clothes, though there was a hint of happiness in her expression. Gu Xiangsi, still not fully understanding, blushed as she recalled what Ye Wenxin had done last night. To hide her embarrassment, she quickly pretended to wash her face.
Ye Wenxin, however, didn’t pay her much mind, and was murmuring to herself, “Looks like she’s not it.”
Ye Wenxin had checked the peach blossoms this morning, thinking that nibbling on the buns last night had some effect. However, the three peach blossoms showed no change, as if signaling that her fate was not with Gu Xiangsi this time.
If that were the case, Ye Wenxin felt there was no need to continue pursuing Gu Xiangsi. With that realization, she adjusted her expression to its most neutral and turned, only to see Gu Xiangsi yawning again. Feeling a bit uneasy, she asked with concern, “What’s wrong? Didn’t sleep well?”
Gu Xiangsi was a little flustered but more pleased. Watching Ye Wenxin intend to play dumb, she understandingly denied that anything had happened the night before, nodded and said, “Yes, I had a very strange dream last night. I dreamt that someone was eating buns.”
At that moment, Ye Wenxin nearly dropped her teacup, but she forced herself to remain calm and managed a smile. “Sounds like a good dream. It means you’ll be well-provided for, Xiangsi.”
Gu Xiangsi also smiled. “I think so too, but why was I the bun in the dream?”
Ye Wenxin felt increasingly uneasy but reminded herself that this was merely Gu Xiangsi, a female lead whose luck hadn’t gained any form, so she replied, “Maybe someone will bring you wealth and honor. You might even meet your destined woman soon.”
Knowing that Gu Xiangsi despised men and that the chances of her encountering a true match in that sense were -100%, Ye Wenxin quickly adjusted her response. The words seemed to please Gu Xiangsi, and Ye Wenxin knew she had successfully deflected the conversation. She then resumed her earnest but nonsensical chatter to avoid discussing the buns from the previous night.
With the day’s busy activities and the need to search for the escaped jiangshi, there was no time for further idle conversation. When night fell again, Ye Wenxin found herself in a state of confusion.
The events of the previous night replayed themselves as the glistening, white buns seemed to invite her for another taste. Ye Wenxin suspected that Gu Xiangsi might be doing this deliberately, but Gu Xiangsi’s expression was so natural that it made Ye Wenxin wonder if it was merely a coincidence.
Faced with such tempting buns, Ye Wenxin struggled internally, unsure whether to indulge or resist.
“Mm.” Suddenly, Gu Xiangsi let out a soft murmur. Ye Wenxin, startled, immediately closed her eyes, and then felt Gu Xiangsi shift slightly, moving even closer.
With hands and feet simultaneously at work, Gu Xiangsi offered no opportunity for Ye Wenxin to escape the dilemma of whether to eat or not. Ye Wenxin longed for love, but no matter how youthful and buxom Gu Xiangsi was, she lacked any maternal elements. Moreover, Gu Xiangsi was a future female lead, not like the friend with benefits Jin Xiaoqin, or the Yin-Yang ghosts that could be summoned at will.
Most importantly, Gu Xiangsi was not the destined person she needed to upgrade her peach blossom luck. Realizing this, Ye Wenxin controlled her urge to indulge in the buns once more, and quietly slipped out of the tent…
Outside, the area was brightly lit, with guards patrolling everywhere. Ye Wenxin stretched, and saw Priest Wang still chatting with people. When he noticed that Ye Wenxin was still awake, he looked like he was seeing a ghost.
“Grandmaster, why are you going for a walk instead of sleeping? Do you have any idea how terrifying it is outside with jiangshi around!?” In just one day, they had dealt with over five hundred jiangshi, including many familiar cultivators.
The jiangshi were spreading rapidly, leaving no time for respite. Right now, their only option was to locate the Jiangshi King and eliminate it to change the situation.
Ye Wenxin smiled but couldn’t mention how Gu Xiangsi’s terrible sleeping habits had made her want to cry. “I was worried you guys might need help.”
Priest Wang, touched by her concern, replied, “It’s fine; we can manage. If we can’t, you will be the first one we call, Grandmaster. You should get some rest now.”
Priest Wang insisted on sending Ye Wenxin away, unwilling to see a young junior suffer like this. Ye Wenxin nodded in agreement and pretended to head back to her tent, but in reality, she just turned a corner and went off to explore elsewhere.
There, she spotted Wang Cuihua. Wang Cuihua had been working tirelessly over the past few days; her eyes had faint dark circles, but they hadn’t lost their spark. When she saw Ye Wenxin, her smile instantly faded. Ye Wenxin pretended she didn’t see her and continued walking, intending to take a stroll nearby.
“You can’t go over there!”
Wang Cuihua, noticing the direction Ye Wenxin was heading, called out to stop her.
Ye Wenxin was puzzled. “Why?”
“Jiangshi activity was detected in that area this afternoon. It’s still not guaranteed to be safe,” Wang Cuihua explained. The nearby cultivators also chimed in, addressing Ye Wenxin as ‘Grandmaster’.
