Chapter 400: Blame It On the Buns 3 (3rd Update)
Ye Wenxin, recognizing Wang Cuihua’s concern, nodded politely and said, “Don’t worry, I still have the umbrella sword.”
She pointed to the umbrella sword behind her, but Wang Cuihua grasped Ye Wenxin’s arm, still unwilling to let her go.
“You can’t go. If something happens to you, how am I supposed to explain it to Grandfather?”
Ye Wenxin initially thought Wang Cuihua had finally revised her view of her, but it turned out she was under Priest Wang’s orders. Ye Wenxin smiled, and the two ghosts immediately came out of the umbrella sword, staring intently at Wang Cuihua.
Wang Cuihua felt unsettled under their stare, and decided not to interfere further. She watched as Ye Wenxin walked down the path, quickly disappearing from view…
Ye Wenxin continued walking along the path, with the two ghosts circling around her. The unpleasantness from the previous night’s meal still lingered with them. The ghosts were both excited and apprehensive that Ye Wenxin had finally found a quiet place to eat.
They were happy to have a chance to feed, but anxious about whether Ye Wenxin might do something strange while they ate.
“This spot will do. There’s sufficient Yin energy; it seems like someone must have died recently.” Ye Wenxin observed the night sky, and noted the clouds obscuring the moon, creating an atmosphere perfectly suited for their purposes. She called the Yin-Yang ghosts over.
Ghost Mother rushed over quickly, and greedily started absorbing Yin energy, while Sword Ghost remained her refined self. Since they were out in the wilderness, she maintained vigilance, worried some other spirits might appear to steal their meal.
Ye Wenxin just sat there, one arm holding Ghost Mother and the other gently stroking Sword Ghost’s back, making no unnecessary movements. A light breeze blew in the surroundings; Ye Wenxin preferred the outdoors to being indoors. As she drifted in and out of sleep, she suddenly felt something bite her hand.
Ye Wenxin jolted awake and noticed a bite mark on the back of her hand. This type of mark was not unfamiliar to her, and her expression darkened as she hurriedly reached for a needle to control the spread of corpse poison. However, she found there was no poison present.
Instead, the corpse worm from before boldly appeared before her, wearing a proud little expression. Clearly, it was the culprit.
“You actually have the nerve to come back!” Ye Wenxin felt a flicker of joy, realizing that she might get to make that tenth-grade pill after all. Nonetheless, she maintained a stern demeanor and reprimanded the corpse worm for its lack of conscience.
After hearing this, the corpse worm wiggled its body as if trying to convey something. Ye Wenxin didn’t understand, but watched as the corpse worm made a walking gesture and then unfurled a pair of wings.
“No way, you’ve really mutated!” Ye Wenxin was astonished, but the corpse worm paid no heed to her comments and sped off, seemingly indicating that she should follow it.
Ye Wenxin followed without hesitation, initially believing that the corpse worm was leading her to some hidden opportunity. However, to her surprise, it brought her straight into the midst of a jiangshi horde.
The Yin-Yang ghosts bared their sharp teeth, ready to tear apart the jiangshi if necessary. While the jiangshi seemed intent on attacking Ye Wenxin, some unseen force was holding them back, and they could only watch her with hungry eyes.
As Ye Wenxin moved through the horde, she began to understand the true purpose of the corpse worm appearing before her.
After a short while, they walked into the depths of a cave, where Ye Wenxin saw the woman in black sitting inside. A cloak obscured her figure, making it difficult to discern her features, adding an air of mystery.
The corpse worm eagerly approached the woman, indicating that it had a true master. This person was likely the Jiangshi King that Ye Wenxin and the others had been searching for.
Ye Wenxin stared at the Jiangshi King, whose eyes were shrouded in shadow, and seemed to be fixed on her. After a moment, Ye Wenxin heard a voice in her mind: “Mortal, Chong Chong (literally ‘worm worm/bug bug’) says you are a good person.”
“???”
Ye Wenxin was puzzled by this unexpected ‘good person’ label. The corpse worm wiggled its body as if protesting against the Jiangshi King’s statement. The Jiangshi King glanced at it, and the voice continued in her mind: “Chong Chong says you are her little sister, so she will protect you in the future.”
“???”
Ye Wenxin who was designated as the corpse worm’s relative, couldn’t understand why it had brought a mere ordinary person like her to the Jiangshi King. Could she have gotten Gu Xiangsi’s opportunity after nibbling her buns?
While Ye Wenxin’s confusion deepened, the Jiangshi King was already standing up, and the Yin-Yang ghosts screeched to intimidate her.
Normally, the Yin-Yang ghosts would have charged directly at the threat without hesitation. Clearly, they had realized the difference between themselves and the Jiangshi King and chose to issue a vocal warning instead.
“What are you pursuing in this life, mortal?”
The Jiangshi King’s voice cut through Ye Wenxin’s jumbled thoughts. It seemed that she couldn’t speak, so she could only communicate with Ye Wenxin in this special way.
“Me? Of course, I desire world peace!” Ye Wenxin answered without thinking, hoping the Jiangshi King would just leave already, so Long Qingyue could return to her usual self, and they could preserve the amicability of their close friendship.
For a few seconds, the Jiangshi King remained silent. Ye Wenxin thought her request might be too difficult, but then she heard the Jiangshi King’s voice again: “It’s possible, but you need to do me a favor, mortal.”
The Jiangshi King referred to itself as ‘me’, not displaying the hateful arrogance typical of her species. Ye Wenxin searched through her memories, but couldn’t find any connection between Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng and the Jiangshi King. She started to suspect that maybe Long Qingyue was just messing with her, trying to turn her into free labor.
Given the current situation, it seemed that the Jiangshi King was also planning to use her as a laborer to achieve some hidden agenda. Ye Wenxin, somewhat curious about this, replied, “Tell me what it is first, and I’ll see if I can help.”
The Jiangshi King’s black figure wavered slightly, and in the blink of an eye, it was standing right in front of her. Its speed was unmatched, even by Hei Tong. This made Ye Wenxin more vigilant, and she began to contemplate whether she should kill the Jiangshi King now before any peach blossom developments could happen between them, to avoid future trouble.
“This task isn’t difficult for you,” the Jiangshi King said, as if it had complete confidence in Ye Wenxin. Ye Wenxin was even more puzzled, and then the voice in her mind continued, “Help me find Gu Qingcheng.”
“???”
Ye Wenxin didn’t bother hiding her surprise. She had thought that, for once, she wouldn’t have to take the blame, but the Jiangshi King’s words made it seem as if all the chaos the jiangshi had caused was somehow another one of her, Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng’s, crimes.
“What’s the matter? Do you find it difficult? Or are you unwilling to help me find her?” The Jiangshi King’s aura began to shift, as if ready to unleash a battle at the slightest wrong word.
