Release the Female Lead Ch. 401

Chapter 401: I Suddenly Became a Homewrecker! (1st Update)

Ye Wenxin was even more confused, but seeing the Jiangshi King’s displeasure, she said, “No, I just wanted to ask if you know who Gu Qingcheng is.”

Ye Wenxin’s expression turned strange as the Jiangshi King’s ghostly figure approached. A breeze blew past, and Ye Wenxin seemed to glimpse the pale skin hidden beneath the cloak. Her skin was indeed fair, but as for whether she was beautiful, it was impossible to tell for now because she wore a mask.

The mask emitted an ominous aura, preventing Ye Wenxin from using her divine sense to discern the Jiangshi King’s appearance, which also explained why no one could uncover this woman’s true identity.

Otherwise, when Long Qingyue was present, she would have already noticed this Jiangshi King, and she wouldn’t have to drag Ye Wenxin to the sea to go fishing.

Having figured out these details, Ye Wenxin relaxed significantly and then heard the voice in her mind continue, “Just a mere Demon Lord.”

People throughout the world feared Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng. But hearing the Jiangshi King’s bold words, Ye Wenxin felt a strange mix of emotions. Although they were talking about her, it felt as if they were discussing someone else entirely.

Seeing the Jiangshi King’s strong obsession with her, Ye Wenxin continued, “But if you know of the Demon Lord, then you must also know that she has long since retired. I’m just a minor disciple of the Azure Wings Sect—how could I possibly help you find her?”

Ye Wenxin kept trying to distance herself from Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng, while also wanting to understand what kind of entanglement or grievances the Jiangshi King had with her.

Could it be another muddled affair from when she was under Qi Deviation?

No, based on Long Qingyue’s tone, it must have been something that happened before she met Liu Churan, something she and Long Qingyue experienced together. But during that period, the two of them had already figured out their place in this world, and had begun doing evil, laying the foundation for their future fame.

She really couldn’t figure out why, despite always wiping out everyone at the scene, she had left such a significant hidden danger behind.

The more Ye Wenxin thought about it, the stranger it seemed. What puzzled her even more was why the Jiangshi King would seek out a minor character like her.

“Aren’t you capable of using Flower Burial, mortal? How could you not find her?” The Jiangshi King’s voice came again, leaving Ye Wenxin somewhat surprised. She recalled that she had previously used Flower Burial in Yangzhou City. If it were the Jiangshi King, she could indeed have witnessed everything without Ye Wenxin noticing.

“No, what I’ve learned isn’t Flower Burial.” Ye Wenxin tried to brush it off. Out of the thousands of cultivation manuals in the world, countless of them were flower-themed. Even if it involved blooming flowers, it had nothing to do with her.

As long as Ye Wenxin firmly denied it, the Jiangshi King would have no way to pin it on her.

“Oh? Then what’s the name of this technique?” The Jiangshi King’s voice was icy, as if she were merely inquiring.

Ye Wenxin thought for a moment before replying, “The manual originally didn’t have a name. Later, I heard about Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng’s Flower Burial and found it far too gruesome, so I decided to name mine Flower Cherish.”

“Flower Cherish—that does sound much more pleasant than Flower Burial.”

The Jiangshi King’s voice rose slightly in pitch. Just as Ye Wenxin thought she had successfully fooled her, she saw a pale hand extend out of the Jiangshi King’s black robes. Ye Wenxin was lifted into the air, with her feet dangling off the ground.

“I don’t care which Flower it is; you must help me find the Demon Lord.”

There was a note of coercion in her words, and Ye Wenxin couldn’t help but feel exasperated. “Great king, I truly don’t know the Demon Lord. Even if you kill me, my answer will remain the same.”

The Jiangshi King’s grip slightly loosened, and the voice in her mind echoed once more, “Chong Chong trusts you.”

The Jiangshi King mentioned the corpse worm, as if its trust was more important than anything else. Out of all the people, Ye Wenxin was the last person the Jiangshi King should trust. After all, beneath Ye Wenxin’s minor character facade lay the terrifying Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng.

However, Ye Wenxin wanted to figure out the connection between the Jiangshi King and the Demon Lord, so she didn’t act rashly.

The corpse worm nodded in a human-like manner, and then flew up to the Jiangshi King’s shoulder, as if communicating something with her. After a moment of silence, Ye Wenxin felt the hand gripping her collar relax, before she was gently lowered back to the ground.

“Go,” the voice said, as if whatever the corpse worm had communicated had convinced her to let Ye Wenxin go.

Ye Wenxin found it hard to believe. According to the records in her inherited memories, a Jiangshi King formed after a thousand years could use magic but had no humanity; one certainly wouldn’t take advice from another species.

But the Jiangshi King displayed the emotions and demeanor closer to those of a human. Ye Wenxin couldn’t make sense of it. She watched the Jiangshi King’s ghostly figure drift away, and quickly called out, “Great king, if you could share your reasons with me, I’d be willing to help. But if you keep everything hidden, I can’t take that risk.”

She attempted to negotiate with the Jiangshi King, hoping to extract some information. Once she had the details, she could return to her true form and battle the Jiangshi King for as long as it took to settle this matter once and for all.

But she feared it might be some romantic entanglement from her time as the Demon Lord, so she hesitated to reveal her true identity, worried she wouldn’t even have a chance to escape if things went wrong.

The Jiangshi King paused briefly, and then her voice echoed in Ye Wenxin’s mind.

“The crime of stealing a husband is absolutely irreconcilable.”

“???”

Just as Ye Wenxin thought it might be some deep-seated grudge, she was completely stunned by these words. Ye Wenxin had never had any connection with men in her life. Forget about having any involvement with a man, she couldn’t even find one she could see eye-to-eye with.

How could Ye Wenxin not be infuriated when the Jiangshi King was slapping such a huge accusation on her, and calling her a homewrecker?

“Is your husband a man or a woman?”

“A man, of course.” The Jiangshi King’s voice was somewhat agitated, clearly not understanding why Ye Wenxin would ask such an impolite question.

Hearing this, Ye Wenxin became even more convinced that there must be some misunderstanding and chuckled, “But haven’t you heard that the Demon Lord prefers women? If your husband is a man, how could he possibly have fallen victim to her?”

The very thing that had always bothered Ye Wenxin—her sexual orientation—now became the only proof of her innocence. Yet, the Jiangshi King’s voice remained cold: “Absolutely impossible. No one in this world knows Gu Qingcheng better than I.”

The Jiangshi King responded with such conviction, her tone growing more agitated. Ye Wenxin, now more relaxed, realized the situation was indeed a misunderstanding.

She tried to patiently reason with her, but the Jiangshi King wasn’t listening at all. It was clear that she had come out this time solely to settle the score with Gu Qingcheng.
