Release the Female Lead Ch. 453

Chapter 453: When Will You Start to Like Me?

Ye Tian’s expression froze for a moment, then he sighed. “We once had a connection, but in the end, it came to nothing. You know, it would’ve been better if I’d been in the village at the time.” His face showed regret and anger, as if he were recalling the tragic scene he encountered when he returned home.

When Ye Tian finally touched on the heart of the matter, Ye Wenxin couldn’t help but ask, “What happened?”

“At that time, I couldn’t stay in the village anymore, so I went to find my fated person. But I never found her, and could only return home to wait for news. When I got home, however, I found my parents brutally murdered. I searched and searched, but the only person I couldn’t find was my little sister.”

The pain on Ye Tian’s face appeared genuine, and Ye Wenxin couldn’t spot any flaw. As she was listening, she realized something. Ye Tian still hadn’t discovered that it was Ye Wenxin herself who had caused the massacre all those years ago.

“Then, who do you think did it?”

Ye Tian gave a bitter smile. “I’ve been searching for the truth all these years.”

Ye Wenxin was secretly relieved but continued to probe, “Maybe it was your little sister?”

She wanted to see if Ye Tian would start suspecting her, but he reacted strongly. He completely rejected the idea that Ye Wenxin could have done such a thing.

“Impossible. My sister didn’t even know how to wield a knife, let alone kill someone.” Ye Wenxin smiled knowingly. Not only back then, but even now, she still didn’t know how to use a knife.

But she said nothing more, just quietly listened as Ye Tian described his sister. He mentioned that she behaved eccentrically, at times wise beyond her years, and even somewhat enigmatic. Ye Wenxin, who had no idea that others viewed her this way, smiled silently. As she listened, she polished the entire plate of chicken legs.

Ye Tian seemed quite relaxed after getting this all out, and Ye Wenxin shared the feeling. It was like she had returned to the starting point of her rebirth. Despite the many bad things that had happened, there was at least one good thing: her adopted brother still remembered her. It was a pity that they had changed so much since then.

“Pavilion Master, there’s an urgent matter…” Their conversation didn’t even last the time it took for a stick of incense to burn, before Ye Tian had to leave in haste.

Ye Wenxin continued standing guard. In her daze, she felt someone sit beside her. Looking over, she saw it was Abbess Jiunan.

“The Pavilion Master just left.” Ye Wenxin instinctively assumed that the abbess had come for Ye Tian, and mentioned where he went.

Abbess Jiunan shook her head slightly. “I have already entered religious life; how could I still have worldly desires?” Her words carried a deep meaning, as if she was also warning herself not to get too involved.

“Right,” Ye Wenxin didn’t deny it. Abbess Jiunan looked at her. She seemed to find it strange that Ye Wenxin had suddenly stopped asking questions.

“Abbess. You kept your long hair for the Pavilion Master, didn’t you?” Ye Wenxin asked again. It seemed Abbess Jiunan wanted to deny it, but felt that she couldn’t.

“Well, sort of.” In the end, this sentiment only turned into a sigh. She likely understood that her actions contradicted the principles of a nun.

“I was named Jiunan because I have nine tribulations, but I think the hardest one, is the tribulation of emotions.” Abbess Jiunan opened up a topic, and continued sharing her thoughts.

Ye Wenxin had just listened to Ye Tian’s reflections on life, and now she was hearing Abbess Jiunan recount her past. Her emotions were particularly mixed. As she listened to them talk about the things they desired but couldn’t obtain, it was like she had truly become their little sister.

If Ye Wenxin truly loved someone, she would follow them even if it meant overturning the world. But since she had yet to encounter such a person, she couldn’t understand such deep affection.

If they loved each other, why endure so much mutual suffering? Why not just be together?

“Then, Sister, do you still love him?”

Ye Wenxin interrupted Abbess Jiunan’s words, leaving her momentarily stunned.

“Sister?”

“I just acknowledged the Pavilion Master as my big brother, so that makes you my elder sister-in-law.” Ye Wenxin decided to assist Abbess Jiunan with Ye Tian.

They needed to change and break the rules. As long as Abbess Jiunan could overcome herself, there would still be other possibilities. Abbess Jiunan smiled again, but this time it was much more relaxed.

“Thank you for your kind intentions, Benefactor. But unfortunately, we were destined to meet, yet not fated to be together.” She stood up and bid farewell to Ye Wenxin. Ye Wenxin didn’t think she had done anything wrong. Abbess Jiunan clearly still had feelings for him, yet she rejected her offer.

For a while, Ye Wenxin glumly waited until Jin Xiaoqin finally appeared. She didn’t only bring food specially prepared for Ye Wenxin, but also a pot of wine that she had somehow acquired.

One was the unconventional Jin Xiaoqin, the other was an always unrestrained Ye Wenxin. As they started drinking, Ye Wenxin voiced her frustrations.

Jin Xiaoqin was well-versed about various factions, and naturally knew about the Pavilion Master of Nirvana Pavilion. Over the decades, he had kept himself pure, and there had been no rumors or Dao companions associated with him. So, people speculated that Ye Tian preferred men.

“But no one would’ve ever imagined that the Pavilion Master is actually infatuated with a nun.” Jin Xiaoqin, now somewhat drunk, spoke without much restraint. She leaned heavily against Ye Wenxin, and was starting to get frisky. Ye Wenxin grabbed those wandering hands and said with a wry smile, “So, do you think these two could ever get together?”

“If we can make it work, they naturally can too. But Ye Tian is as stubborn as a block of wood. Without someone bridging the gap, it’s unlikely anything will come of it.” Jin Xiaoqin, now quite drunk, leaned most of her body weight on Ye Wenxin.

Ye Wenxin responded with an “mm”, then asked, “So, what should be done?”

As if she had heard something unbelievable, Jin Xiaoqin sobered up a bit and looked at Ye Wenxin, “You’re not actually thinking of pursuing a nun, are you?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I just think the two of them are quite compatible, so I’d like to try helping them.”

Jin Xiaoqin’s expression grew a bit serious. “Even if it might not be a good thing?”

“Yes, even so. I think both of them genuinely like each other,” Ye Wenxin replied. Jin Xiaoqin leaned closer and continued, “Then when will you start to like me?”

“Huh?” Ye Wenxin didn’t expect this question from Jin Xiaoqin.

“Forget I asked. I know you have many admirers, and if you met that Demon Lord today, she would’ve captivated you too.” Jin Xiaoqin mumbled to herself.

Jin Xiaoqin had often overthought things since meeting Ye Wenxin. She viewed everyone as a potential rival or danger, but Jin Xiaoqin also realized that she might not have much of a chance in this competition.
