Chapter 464: Reported
Ye Wenxin abruptly sat up, only to find Fairy Fengya staring at her, seemingly confused by her big reaction.
“Just feeling a bit sleepy,” Ye Wenxin said with an awkward smile. She had originally planned to carefully recall the memory of Celestial Master Zhong’s encounter with Fairy Fengya, but as soon as she left Fairy Fengya’s arms, that memory completely vanished.
Ye Wenxin became more curious about the story behind it. She gazed at Fairy Fengya, hoping to rest in her arms again.
However, cultivators who had reached the Nascent Soul stage, like Fairy Fengya, rarely needed sleep. In fact, she was on the verge of ascension, practically semi-immortal, which explained why she had watched Ye Wenxin sleep before.
Fairy Fengya simply couldn’t sleep, so instead of wasting time with her eyes closed, she preferred to meditate and cultivate. When Ye Wenxin said she wanted to sleep, Fairy Fengya made room, offering plenty of space for her to rest, but having no intention of leaving.
Ye Wenxin didn’t force Fairy Fengya, and couldn’t tell her about the memories she could now access either. So, she closed her eyes and tried to search for that hidden memory, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t find it.
Celestial Master Zhong’s memories spanned over a thousand years. If they were to flood directly into Ye Wenxin’s mind all at once, it would likely overload her brain. That was why she had sifted through them little by little, searching for the key information to solve the problem that was beyond her abilities.
However, this particular memory seemed to require physical contact with Fairy Fengya—or at least looking at her face—to recall. Ye Wenxin felt extremely awkward, but her curiosity got the better of her. She pulled the absent-minded Fairy Fengya closer.
Fairy Fengya remained as calm as ever. She didn’t even attempt to resist, as if no matter how inappropriate Ye Wenxin was, it wouldn’t faze her in the slightest. She wouldn’t even blink. But Ye Wenxin had no such intentions. She held Fairy Fengya in her arms, hoping that the proximity would help her unlock the memory again.
But this position didn’t seem to help unlock the sealed memory either. Thinking in reverse, Ye Wenxin nestled back into Fairy Fengya’s embrace. At last, the elusive memory began to surface.
It seemed that this part of Celestial Master Zhong’s memories had been deliberately sealed, to keep it hidden from Ye Wenxin, the inheritor of those memories. Had the seal not been slightly flawed, Ye Wenxin might have taken a long time to realize Celestial Master Zhong had tricked her.
The memory took place over a decade ago, when Fairy Fengya was the last person Celestial Master Zhong encountered before his ascension…
A small girl stood alone in the wilderness. Her eyes brimmed with wariness, and her face was dirty, but it couldn’t hide her delicate features.
“What are you doing out here all by yourself, little lady?”
The young girl’s expression turned even more hostile. She clutched a dagger in her hand, wore little more than tattered rags, resembling a wild creature. There was a raw, untamed energy about her that made it hard to imagine any connection between this feral child and Fairy Fengya.
“You don’t need to be so wary of me, little lady,” Celestial Master Zhong said in a calm tone, which, in hindsight, had a faint resemblance to Fairy Fengya’s usual tone. “If I wanted to kill you, you wouldn’t last a breath.”
The young Fairy Fengya remained on guard. Celestial Master Zhong merely waved his hand, and in a snap, a nearby mountain crumbled to dust. This was the power of someone ready to ascend, capable of destroying the realm. Therefore, the next realm was created to keep the balance.
Celestial Master Zhong had chosen to delay his ascension for a hundred years, all for the sake of his lover, Ghost Mother. He had created a secret realm where she could live freely, and also set up opportunities for Ye Wenxin.
In a sense, Celestial Master Zhong could even be considered Ye Wenxin’s master. But after she found Fairy Fengya included in Celestial Master Zhong’s storyline, Ye Wenxin suddenly felt a little worried.
But what Ye Wenxin feared hadn’t occurred. Even after she witnessed Celestial Master Zhong’s world-destroying powers, the young Fairy Fengya remained unfazed. She seemed only momentarily surprised, then clenched her little fists, and the obliterated mountain reappeared.
Celestial Master Zhong couldn’t suppress his astonishment, and uttered a few words that were not unfamiliar to Ye Wenxin: “Nine Tribulations Exorcising Curse.”
The young Fairy Fengya nodded, her voice oddly mature as she said, “Zhu Ling said, if I kill you, I can break my Tribulation of Death.”
Humans faced nine tribulations. The Tribulation of Emotions was the hardest, while the Death Tribulation was the trickiest. One could only break the Tribulation of Death through encountering an infinitely stronger opponent, experiencing the fear of death, and overcoming that fear.
Celestial Master Zhong’s tone betrayed his surprise. “That old woman is still alive!?”
The young Fairy Fengya responded seriously, “Zhu Ling said you must die.”
She charged at Celestial Master Zhong with nothing but a dagger. Although he should be the strongest, Celestial Master Zhong found himself unable to overcome the world’s strongest cultivation method.
He fled in defeat, and sealed this memory in disgrace. He didn’t want Ye Wenxin to know that he, a cultivator close to ascending, couldn’t defeat Fairy Fengya.
The memory left Ye Wenxin speechless. She had assumed Celestial Master Zhong might be the catalyst for Fairy Fengya’s ambition to ascend. However, it was clear that even Celestial Master Zhong had become nothing more than a stepping stone for her, and had lost his dignity in the process.
Ye Wenxin was suddenly glad she hadn’t fought Fairy Fengya when she lost her cultivation. Facing someone like Fairy Fengya, the ultimate chosen one and most powerful female lead, would’ve been futile.
After she got the full extent of the memory, Ye Wenxin finally relaxed slightly. She felt Fairy Fengya move behind her, and then heard distant footsteps. It likely belonged to Long Qing’er, who was returning from night patrol.
Fairy Fengya was still holding Ye Wenxin, and the scene undoubtedly gave the impression of an affair. Ye Wenxin thought about pulling away, to avoid any misunderstanding with Long Qing’er.
However, since it was Fairy Fengya who was holding her, Ye Wenxin figured any misunderstanding wouldn’t really be her fault. She decided to remain still and wait for Long Qing’er to enter the tent.
Long Qing’er’s lighthearted voice faded when she spotted the two of them on the bed. Fury exploded within her, and she almost flipped the bed over. But she couldn’t direct her anger at Fairy Fengya, so she settled for glaring daggers at Ye Wenxin, her eyes demanding an explanation.
Ye Wenxin maintained her composure. She put on the face of a victim, and answered Long Qing’er, “I’d like to report that it was School Master Fengya who hugged me first. This has nothing to do with me.”
