Chapter 475: The Ambitious vs. the Elderly
The lock was a bit peculiar; unless they used force, they would have no hope of getting the box open. The two of them struggled with it for a long time, but couldn’t manage to open the lock. Ye Wenxin was exhausted, while Qiao Ni was dozing off beside her, clearly unable to stay awake. She naturally climbed onto Ye Wenxin’s bed, seemingly wanting to spend the night there.
“I’ll carry you back. If you sleep over here, your mother will probably kill me,” Ye Wenxin said with a tired smile, unsure whether knowing the truth was a good or bad thing. She had been trying her best to avoid Qiao Ni lately, and with the Yin Pearl inside her, she had even been avoiding Jin Xiaoqin.
However, Qiao Ni seemed to be naturally drawn to her.
The girl giggled. “What are you scared of? We’re just godsisters.”
When those words came from Qiao Ni’s mouth, they somehow sounded flirtatious. After thinking it over, Ye Wenxin ultimately decided to let Qiao Ni stay. The clever Madam Yu would undoubtedly know that Qiao Ni had snuck out. But whether she would notice the missing items was still uncertain. Ye Wenxin planned to return the items first, lest Madam Yu panic upon finding out they were missing.
She whispered a quick word to Qiao Ni, then headed toward Madam Yu’s room. Since it was very late at night, she didn’t approach from the front, and opted to sneak the items back through the window. However, she spotted a familiar figure sitting on the roof.
Tonight, Fairy Fengya was meditating on the rooftop again. She seemed to notice Ye Wenxin, and slowly opened her eyes, observing her every movement.
Ye Wenxin, still in her daytime outfit, made a casual shushing gesture. She thought that Fairy Fengya Fengya would turn a blind eye, considering the late hour, but just as she made the gesture, the temperature around her suddenly dropped. Fairy Fengya unsheathed her long sword and struck directly toward where Ye Wenxin stood, startling her.
The long sword flew into the distance, immediately followed by a scream cutting through the night. Candles suddenly flared to life nearby, drawing everyone’s attention. Ye Wenxin realized that there had been some hidden spies around, but she never expected Fairy Fengya to strike while she was sneaking the items back. She struggled to find the words to express her frustration.
Madam Yu opened her window upon hearing the commotion, and immediately spotted Ye Wenxin. Her gaze quickly fell on the box that Ye Wenxin had been attempting to discreetly return. Clearly, Madam Yu hadn’t slept yet and was likely waiting up for Qiao Ni, who hadn’t returned.
“Xin’er… Where’s Ni Ni? Where’s Ni Ni?!”
The moment Madam Yu’s eyes landed on the box in Ye Wenxin’s hands, her first thought was for her daughter. Ye Wenxin’s face paled as she recalled where Fairy Fengya’s sword had flown to. She immediately turned around to go check on Qiao Ni.
Before she could rush off, Madam Yu grabbed her arm. “Take me with you!”
Ye Wenxin picked up Madam Yu without hesitation and rushed towards her own room. When the two of them entered the room, they found Qiao Ni looking confused, completely unaware of why Ye Wenxin and Madam Yu were so anxious.
“Godmother, you and Ni Ni stay here for now. I’ll go check on the situation.”
Ye Wenxin threw down the umbrella sword and summoned the two ghosts to guard Madam Yu and Qiao Ni. She then swiftly moved outside.
She walked less than a hundred steps, and encountered a man dressed in black. He was clutching his shoulder, where blood had frozen over his injury. It was clear this was the spy Fairy Fengya had struck earlier.
His face twisted with malevolence, and he unleashed some unknown sect’s technique. The incident just now made Ye Wenxin realize she had not been vigilant enough, and it filled her with guilt. Determined to make an example of him, she was ready to kill the black-clad man, but then, other people had appeared.
Ye Wenxin forcibly reigned in the blooming red flowers in her hand, while others quickly apprehended the assassin and dragged him to the main hall for interrogation. After questioning him, they learned that the man was allegedly a remnant of the Tower.
“The Tower has already been wiped out?”
Ye Wenxin recalled Sha Nian-nian, the Tower Master she had gotten acquainted with before. Ye Wenxin figured, given that noob’s morality, she had likely been killed as well.
“It was… Liu Churan herself who led the attack,” the man recounted with a face full of grief, as if reliving the horrific events, and the others believed him.
Even though the Tower of Unfettered Dreams was a demon sect, they were merely assassins for hire. They had a distinctly different purpose from the other demon sects. However, Ye Wenxin had a different take.
As someone who had spent a long time on the dark side, Ye Wenxin knew that begging for mercy was often a villain’s way. While the man’s expression showed grief, there was mockery concealed in his eyes. She immediately figured that he wasn’t really from the Tower at all.
The man’s pain was too fake, making it obvious that he had another purpose for being at the inn.
Ye Wenxin stepped forward, and slapped him across the face. She questioned coldly, “What’s your real objective?”
The slap left the man stunned, and the others were equally baffled. They couldn’t comprehend why the usually reserved Ye Wenxin had suddenly become so aggressive.
“You’re not from the Tower; which sect do you belong to?” Ye Wenxin seized the upper hand, pressing him for answers. The man stubbornly refused to admit anything, so Ye Wenxin slapped him a few more times, showing no mercy.
As the man nearly passed out from the slaps, he finally caved. “Alright, alright! Someone paid me to monitor—” But before he could finish, his body started convulsing violently, and foam frothed at his mouth, before he died on the spot.
Everyone looked at each other, bewildered, but it wasn’t over yet. The man’s body suddenly stood upright, with his head at an unnatural angle. His abdomen glowed green, which meant he had been implanted with a Yin Fetus.
It multiplied his combat strength by several times. This was Liu Churan’s twisted gift to those who loved meddling in her affairs. Ye Wenxin had already gotten a taste of the Yin Fetuses’ overwhelming numbers. Now that she saw one emerge in the outside world, she further realized how insane Liu Churan was.
She was willing to upend the entire world for one person.
These Yin Fetuses were incredibly difficult to deal with. Since Ah Jiu still couldn’t use Abbess Jiunan’s form, and Ye Tian was only a half-baked cultivator, the only capable fighters left were Jin Xiaoqin and a few remaining elders.
With each attack, the Yin Fetus became stronger, and its body also grew larger. It was clear that Liu Churan had conducted some kind of experiment to create this powerful Yin Fetus.
Ye Wenxin couldn’t just stand by any longer. The very moment she called back the Yin-Yang ghosts, the Yin Fetus suddenly changed direction and charged toward the umbrella sword.
The umbrella sword, a sacred treasure of the Southern Dipper Temple, was capable of inflicting harm on the Yin Fetus. Yet, the Yin Fetus seemed completely unbothered by its power, as it grabbed the umbrella sword before turning to flee.
Ye Wenxin stood frozen for a moment, and then suddenly realized that Liu Churan had not come just to cause trouble.
She had specifically orchestrated this attack to steal the Yin-Yang ghosts, aiming to use them to further her mad ambitions.
