Release the Female Lead Ch. 503

Chapter 503: Had Enough

However, the matron misunderstood Ye Wenxin’s action. She held on even tighter and kept wheedling, fearing that Ye Wenxin would escape.

Ye Wenxin knew there was no escape, but couldn’t figure out why the peach blossom demon had stirred. She scanned the surroundings, trying to see if there was any woman she needed to pay attention to.

However, Ye Wenxin found no one before the matron pulled her into a room to rest. Fairy Fengya followed beside her, maintaining her usual indifference. Dressed in coarse clothing, people mistook her for Ye Wenxin’s attendant.

The matron became more energetic and explained the dire situation in Liu City. She had sent out SOS, and carrier pigeons, and even dispatched people to seek out cultivators. But nothing could leave Liu City’s borders, as if the entire city was sealed off.

Ye Wenxin felt there was something odd about this situation. No matter how powerful a demon might be, she couldn’t possibly control all of Liu City. For instance, Shura Hall’s Liu Yansheng, whom she had met before, had some charm abilities. But at most, she could control one or a few people. Setting up such a massive barrier was out of the question.

Moreover, the demon race had already left for other continents in the past and ceased getting involved with humans. So, the mystery piqued Ye Wenxin’s intrigue.

After learning some precautions for entering the city, Ye Wenxin agreed to try resolving this demon issue and soon bid farewell to the villagers.

Ye Wenxin and company returned to Liu City’s outskirts. This time, Ye Wenxin had altered her appearance slightly to look like a matron in her thirties. Fairy Fengya was forced to dress as a maid but refused to remove her mask. These two, one following the other, continued toward Liu City.

The area had tight security. Guards were using some kind of stone to test whether the people entering were cultivators.

This particular stone could test one’s spirit roots, but it was unclear how it had fallen into mortal hands. However, the spirit tester stone was ineffective against someone like Ye Wenxin or Fairy Fengya.

Several cultivators who had tried to sneak past the inspection got caught, prompting another round of shouting and fighting.

In addition to this, Liu City was shrouded with mist. Any cultivator flying on their sword should avoid direct contact with it at all costs.

Before long, Ye Wenxin reached her turn for inspection. The gatekeeper’s face was deathly pale as if he hadn’t slept in a long time. It made him look mentally unstable. Although Ye Wenxin had been obsessed before, as it was her who played the ghosts, she hadn’t developed any strange behaviors.

But the situation was different now. Human essence was a magnet for demons. This guard seemed to have indulged excessively, which explained his current listless state.

As Ye Wenxin wondered if the kitsune’s presence would unlock a new position, the guard politely invited her inside.

Ye Wenxin smiled faintly. She now had three parts of Long Qingyue, three parts of Fairy Fengya, and four parts of Gu Qingcheng’s appearance. Stacked together, these traits turned her into another devastating beauty.

However, perhaps due to her aura clashing with men, the guard, though polite, showed no sign of attraction. His gaze quickly shifted toward the masked Fairy Fengya.

“Miss, please remove your mask.” The guard informed Fairy Fengya that she had to remove her mask for inspection. Wearing masks usually wouldn’t be an issue, but this guard wanted to check her face.

Ye Wenxin, not wanting Fairy Fengya’s beauty to draw more trouble, became concerned. From a distance, she called out.

“Guard brother. I suggest you best not look at my maid’s face.”

The guard, puzzled, asked, “Why?”

Ye Wenxin explained, “My maid is extraordinarily ugly. Even I, as her mistress, can’t bear to look at her. That’s why she always wears a mask. If you insist on seeing her face, I’d advise you to mentally prepare yourself.”

The guard scoffed, incredulous that anyone could be that hideous. He reached out to remove the mask, and Fairy Fengya didn’t dodge. Ye Wenxin’s heart dropped to her stomach, fearing the inevitable.

However, the moment the guard saw Fairy Fengya’s face, he was so horrified that he fell straight on his butt. His reaction brought relief to Ye Wenxin. She figured Fairy Fengya must have used some trick to avoid the inspection.

Even after Fairy Fengya finished with the spirit tester stone, the guard still couldn’t stand up. Unable to contain her curiosity, Ye Wenxin dragged the masked woman to a nearby corner.

“What exactly did you show him? He nearly wet himself,” asked Ye Wenxin.

She recalled how the guard had seemed fearless moments before, only to completely change after seeing Fairy Fengya’s face. Ye Wenxin thought it was funny.

Fairy Fengya replied, “I showed him his mind’s greatest fear.”

Ye Wenxin found this technique interesting and continued to ask, “So, what was the guard so afraid of?”

Fairy Fengya slightly tilted her head and slowly responded, “His dead wife.”

Ye Wenxin paused before sighing. “I guess one shouldn’t let the dead haunt them. But now I’m curious—what do I fear most? How about you let me try it too?”

Fairy Fengya nodded, prompting Ye Wenxin to remove her mask as the guard did earlier. She thought she might see some demon or ghost. To her surprise, she was still seeing Fairy Fengya.

Ye Wenxin couldn’t resist touching that face. “Does your illusion technique not work on me? Why am I still seeing your face?”

Fairy Fengya was silent before replying, “The person you fear most is likely me.”

The response left Ye Wenxin speechless. She thought Fairy Fengya’s joke was decidedly unfunny. “You? Why would I be afraid of you?”

Despite saying this, Ye Wenxin subconsciously took half a step back. As much as she didn’t want to admit it, her feelings toward Fairy Fengya were  complicated.

Because of Fairy Fengya’s eccentricities, Ye Wenxin remained on guard around her. She hadn’t expected her subconscious to harbor a fear so deep.

It seemed unbelievable and somewhat excessive.

Fairy Fengya stayed silent. Not being much of a talker, she offered no further explanation. When Ye Wenxin still didn’t stop touching her face, Fairy Fengya finally said, “Have you touched enough?”

Ye Wenxin only then realized she was still caressing Fairy Fengya’s cheek. She quickly apologized and helped Fairy Fengya put her mask back on.

The two resumed their journey. Neither of them mentioned the reason behind Ye Wenxin’s actions just now.
