Chapter 519: Romance is Everything
The kitsune remained unaware of being spied upon. Strangely, the black skulls had vanished and transformed back into pink hearts. Simultaneously, the peculiar stench reemerged, as if to hint at more heresy contained within the kitsune’s body.
Ye Wenxin calmed herself. She groomed the kitsune’s tails and gave her a back rub. The massage rendered the kitsune into a limp lump on the floor. After a while, she finally remembered her purpose in bringing Ye Wenxin here and sighed. “It seems like we could develop something together. Ah, why aren’t you a man… I want a man!”
The kitsune lamented while hugging herself. There was an obvious longing for love in her eyes. Her tails wagged vigorously. She stared at them for a few seconds. Unable to resist the urge, she tended to them again. As the process repeated, Ye Wenxin felt as if her neck would break from the strain. Finally, the kitsune seemed satisfied and released her Charm.
Ye Wenxin jolted, pretending to regain her composure. The kitsune urged her to resume completing the questionnaire. Ye Wenxin didn’t want to stay too long, so she hastily wrote down a few things and was eventually allowed to leave.
It was already late at night. The kitsune thoughtfully escorted Ye Wenxin home. After being declined repeatedly, she warned Ye Wenxin about monsters appearing at night and forcefully escorted her to her dormitory.
Ye Wenxin still couldn’t understand what the kitsune was up to, so she ran off to search the library, but found nothing again.
The next day came quickly. Ye Wenxin faced another awkward dilemma. She forgot to do her assignments. The kitsune punished her to stand, and gave her a few light hits on the palm.
“Let this be your reminder. Don’t do it again.” The kitsune smiled bewitchingly. Her horrible smell aside, she was a captivating figure. But considering her fate would curse anyone close to her, Ye Wenxin dared not entertain any ideas. She worried that one day, instead of a lead character killing her, she might die of the kitsune’s curse.
But Ye Wenxin also noticed the kitsune seemed to be cozying up to her. She sensed other intentions behind it but couldn’t pinpoint them for the moment.
The push-and-pull interaction between them continued.
Time flew by. During the day, Ye Wenxin would engage with the kitsune, while at night, she searched the library to confirm whether the Heavenly Book was Wen Susu.
However, Wen Susu remained mysterious, and Ye Wenxin had no idea where to look.
“Xiaowen, why do you seem so troubled?” The kitsune stuck close to Ye Wenxin as ever, but it felt different from how others approached Ye Wenxin. Her intentions seemed more innocent. Ye Wenxin suspected it was her luck clashing with the kitsune’s, keeping the other woman from developing feelings for her.
Ye Wenxin was perfectly fine with that. She pointed to a particular piece of text and said, “I don’t understand this part.”
The kitsune leaned in to look. Smiling, she explained the answers to Ye Wenxin. Ye Wenxin pretended not to understand and led her in. “Teacher, I’ve heard that the Heavenly Book knows everything. Is that true or false?”
The kitsune’s expression subtly changed at the name, but she nodded. “Yes, there is such a rumor. As for whether it’s true or not, I wouldn’t know.”
The kitsune intentionally concealed her knowledge about the true nature of the Heavenly Book. Ye Wenxin could tell, but acted oblivious. “What about what the other students said? If one kneels sincerely at the library at night, will the Heavenly Book answer their questions?”
Ye Wenxin continued the inquiry. The kitsune seemed a bit displeased but still nodded. “That’s just a rumor. There are only monsters at night. No Heavenly Book to see.” However, her insistence only convinced Ye Wenxin that there was a connection between her and the Heavenly Book.
Yet, the kitsune kept her lips sealed, giving no chance for Ye Wenxin to probe deeper. Ye Wenxin could only resume doing her homework and act stupid by asking a few more questions.
The kitsune stayed behind her, using every means possible to initiate physical contact with Ye Wenxin. Ye Wenxin thought she had a preference not for wrestling but in eating people. However, the kitsune seemed distracted during class today. Curious, Ye Wenxin asked her about it, and she said, “Xiaowen, you should stop coming over for the next few days.”
Despite saying that, the kitsune inhaled Ye Wenxin’s scent, looking somewhat infatuated. Ye Wenxin was bemused but still nodded in response.
Seeing this, the kitsune couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you going to ask anything?”
“Will you answer if I ask, teacher?” Ye Wenxin returned. The kitsune sighed. “A new teacher will be coming soon.”
Ye Wenxin then remembered today’s announcement. Mr. Mo Xiaohai had resigned, and a new teacher was to take his place. Starting tomorrow, the kitsune would be interacting more with this new teacher.
“Is the new teacher a man? Is that why you’re so distressed?” Ye Wenxin asked tentatively. The kitsune looked worried. “Yes, it’s a man. Several male teachers who came before all tried to pursue me. It is so bothersome.”
Ye Wenxin almost laughed out loud, thinking the kitsune’s words were far-fetched. No matter how fond they were of her, the kitsune’s luck would inevitably bring misfortune or death to those who had feelings for her.
However, Ye Wenxin’s peach blossom chains would keep her relatively safe.
“Xiaowen, how can you laugh at your teacher?” The kitsune was still unaware that she had been seen through. Ye Wenxin smiled without giving any response.
Sure enough, a new teacher arrived the next morning. He was around thirty years old, and despite his average appearance, he had a masculine charm. After the man’s introduction, the kitsune’s expression changed, resembling a young maiden in love. Ye Wenxin smiled wryly at this transformation, thinking the kitsune was about to curse another man.
For three days, the kitsune didn’t come looking for Ye Wenxin. Instead, she devoted herself to the new teacher, sticking to him like maltose.
After those three days, the new teacher died from fright in his sleep, abruptly ending his brief presence. His tragic fate made Ye Wenxin even more aware of how terrifying the Loner’s Curse was.
