Chapter 527: Not Even Sparing a Book
Wen Susu was more elusive than the kitsune. She rarely even showed up to classes. While everyone was already used to this, Ye Wenxin pondered whether those two had discovered her plans and identity, since they were quick to run away.
Despite the relaxing days at the academy, Ye Wenxin hadn’t forgotten her goal. She was debating whether to take a more direct approach when she spotted Fairy Fengya sitting nearby, reading a book.
A gentle breeze blew, enhancing the breathtaking scenery. Fairy Fengya was dazzlingly radiant for a thirteen-year-old. Ye Wenxin inwardly sighed watching her. Walking over, she saw that Fairy Fengya was reading a textbook, fully integrated into academy life.
A child’s life was so carefree.
After a moment of consideration, Ye Wenxin asked, “Xiao Fengfeng, do you have any ideas for tricking Wen Susu into coming out?”
Ye Wenxin had brought Fairy Fengya here as a pawn, yet it seemed that aside from serving as a decorative vase for a few days, she hadn’t done much.
Fairy Fengya slowly raised her head upon hearing the question. The sunlight gently blanketed her body, casting a soft glow around her. As she gazed at Ye Wenxin, a sudden wild impulse surfaced in Ye Wenxin’s mind.
She wanted Fairy Fengya to look only at her—this thought made her shiver uncontrollably. Fairy Fengya remained as indifferent as ever, but when she looked at Ye Wenxin, she at least acknowledged her briefly and said, “You could try going to her room.”
Fairy Fengya’s words served no help at all, Ye Wenxin felt. “Of course, I know something that simple. I’ve been to her room many times. Wen Susu was never there.”
“Is it the person, or the form that isn’t there?”
Fairy Fengya spoke another cryptic sentence as a subtle hint. Ye Wenxin carefully recalled the details of Wen Susu’s room. It was like a warehouse filled with stacked books. Even the bed was piled high with various volumes. Each book was well cared for, evidence of Wen Susu’s love for them.
If Wen Susu was a Heavenly Book that loved books so much, how could she leave so many of her precious treasures unattended?
“Are you suggesting that I set those books on fire?” Ye Wenxin concluded. Fairy Fengya stared dead at her and calmly replied, “If you burn them, she’ll fight you to the death.”
Ye Wenxin felt conflicted. It was bad enough the kitsune had been avoiding her recently. However, even Wen Susu was constantly playing a game of hide-and-seek with her somewhere out of Ye Wenxin’s depth.
“But she won’t come out if I don’t burn them.”
This time, Fairy Fengya kept staring directly at Ye Wenxin without responding. It was hard to tell if she was mentally complaining to Great Grandma about Ye Wenxin’s villainous thoughts again, or if she was too lazy to explain further.
“Forget it. I’ll check things out tonight. You keep reading.” Seeing Fairy Fengya unable to solve her problem, Ye Wenxin hurriedly left.
Fairy Fengya resumed her reading posture, though she occasionally seemed distracted, her mind wandering to some unknown thoughts…
And so, nightfall arrived in this state. After finishing her evening assignments, Ye Wenxin quietly moved along the wall to the adjacent room, where Wen Susu stayed.
As usual, darkness shrouded the place, with book stacks towering to seemingly endless heights. Shelves filled the room, giving off the faint smell of ink. The bed didn’t look lived-in; it had become a paradise for books. They lay there quietly, and despite being lifeless objects, they gave Ye Wenxin a strange feeling, like these books possessed their own thoughts and ideas.
Still, Wen Susu was nowhere in this room. Ye Wenxin decided to sit, hoping she could catch Wen Susu’s return if she waited. Casually, she picked up a book. Its content leaned more towards biography than history, recounting someone’s life story. The details were exhaustive, but because of that, it felt tedious to read. Perusing through the collection, she came across biographies of some familiar figures.
For example, there was the biography of Qiao Lüdao, the manor lord of Green Isle Manor, and another about the life of the Tower Master. It was probably thanks to the Heavenly Book that this secluded place knew so much about these legends and rumors.
Ye Wenxin skimmed through the contents, reading several lines in one go, and surprisingly enjoyed it. Like with Buddhist scriptures, although she wasn’t used to it at first, their contents grew on her the more she read. She continued flipping through book pages and suddenly noticed something different about a book not far away.
The book had the name “Fengya” written on its cover, with sparse content. Upon reading it, she found it contained some of her past experiences with Fairy Fengya. If something like this were to get out, who knows what kind of upheaval it would cause.
Ye Wenxin wanted to destroy the book to prevent it from exposing Fairy Fengya’s connection with Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng. Just as she tore off the first page, she suddenly heard the sound of someone gasping. It was alarming to hear in the stillness of midnight. Pretending she hadn’t heard it, Ye Wenxin closed the book and prepared to rip it in half.
“No!” Wen Susu’s voice finally echoed through the room. Ye Wenxin watched as a book rose into the air and transformed into a human shape. It was Wen Susu, but she appeared different from her usual self.
She had long, dark blue hair and a delicate appearance. Her eyes carried a unique aura of melancholy. It was hard to associate such a moody woman with a mere book.
Ye Wenxin suppressed her surprise and smiled at Wen Susu. “You finally showed up. I thought I’d actually have to burn this place down for you to come out.”
Despite her wise façade, Ye Wenxin hadn’t expected that all her deliberate searching would leave Wen Susu unperturbed. Wen Susu slightly pursed her lips. “You can do whatever you want with me, but not with them.”
Those words, paired with her pretty girl image, stirred an unusual desire to torment her further. For some reason, Ye Wenxin suddenly had the urge to push Wen Susu even more, to see how much she could unsettle her.
“Oh? Whatever I want? Anything at all?” Ye Wenxin started teasing her. Wen Susu frowned slightly, displeased. “Do you have the heart to do those weird things to a book?”
It was as though she was accusing Ye Wenxin of being perverse. But Ye Wenxin had long since stopped caring. She didn’t even spare ghosts. A mere book wouldn’t be a challenge. Hearing Wen Susu’s remark only made Ye Wenxin laugh.
