Chapter 528: Ye Wenxin’s Surreptitious Diversion

“Of course. Since you’re the Heavenly Book, you must know my true identity. Don’t you know better than anyone whether I would do such things?” Ye Wenxin mocked Wen Susu’s naivety. Wen Susu hesitated before calmly replying, “You’re not that kind of person.”

Her eyes gleamed with a deep blue light as she locked eyes with Ye Wenxin. Suddenly, a book-shaped mirror appeared. Its surface displayed flashes of Ye Wenxin’s every action, serving not only as a reminder but also as a warning.

This opponent was as troublesome and tricky as Long Qingyue. Ye Wenxin smiled bitterly, feeling her privacy stripped away. With a tired laugh, her aura flared, and the mirror emitted a shrill sound before shattering into pieces. The surrounding book pages scattered, fluttering mesmerizingly in the air.

The room scene dissolved, and they now stood amidst a vast ocean of books—a grand sight. Seemingly angered by Ye Wenxin’s earlier intentions, Wen Susu hovered midair, preparing to face her in a confrontation.

Ye Wenxin knew she couldn’t afford to be careless. With a quick shift, she reverted to her true form. She deployed Flower Burial alongside Sword Ghost who manifested at the same time.

Clad in a fiery red dress, Sword Ghost’s outfit now had characteristics of a bridal gown, a result of melding with Madam Yu’s luck last time. She appeared even more formidable.

A necklace of small skulls also hung around her neck. Each skull was intricately crafted, their hollow eyes wide, with alternating closed and open mouths, emitting impressive Yin energy.

“Children, are you there?” Ye Wenxin called out. Instantly, eight different-colored furballs came bouncing out. Their fluffy bodies continued to improve proportionate to Ye Wenxin’s transformation and were significantly slimmer than before. Their once-adorable eyes were filled with murderous intent as they roared at Wen Susu in the distance.

“Do you realize that your Flower Burial is useless against books?” Wen Susu observed Ye Wenxin’s summons, Sword Ghost and the furballs. Wen Susu felt confident that humans were no match for her in her domain.

Ye Wenxin smiled. “I do, so I’ve decided not to fight you directly. Instead, I’ll let my ghost and daughters play with you.” She pointed to the ghost, and the furballs, incarnations of the Colored Flags, a relic of the ancients. Although Wen Susu could analyze Flower Burial’s weaknesses, at the end of the day, a Heavenly Book was still just a book.

Ye Wenxin just needed to strike so quickly that Wen Susu wouldn’t have the chance to analyze.

Once she finished speaking, Sword Ghost lunged at Wen Susu with a long sword. The eight furballs were equally unyielding, swirling around before transforming once more into the Colored Flags. Each Colored Flag represented a different ability.

They could summon wind and rain, call forth spirits of the dead, and the eight furballs could even combine their powers to launch a coordinated attack. No matter how clever the Heavenly Book was, she couldn’t possibly predict the randomness during a battle.

The previously confident Wen Susu sported an awkwardly bent arm. It detached from her body and became several pages.

“Truly made of paper.” Witnessing the absurd situation, Ye Wenxin wondered if there were any impossible things in this realm.

“Humph…” Wen Susu let out a cold snort. The scattered pages soared back towards her, reattaching her arm. The surrounding books began to stir violently, transforming into paper figures.

These figures possessed about seventy percent of their creator’s strength but were still vulnerable to water and fire. The Colored Flags swiftly dispatched the paper soldiers.

A look of sorrow crossed Wen Susu’s face. She seemed to feel the pain of her books’ destruction, and upon seeing the chaos in her dimension, she sighed. “Come back.”

As if possessing consciousness, the paper soldiers were unwilling to retreat. They even positioned themselves protectively in front of Wen Susu.

“I don’t want you to die for me,” Wen Susu confessed her thoughts. The paper soldiers glanced at her before transforming back into books, landing gently beside her.

“Thank you for your efforts.” Wen Susu softly stroked the pages and then turned her gaze to Ye Wenxin. “Since you’ve won, I belong to you now.”

Ye Wenxin was dumbfounded, wondering if her ears were malfunctioning. Wen Susu was willing to surrender herself after losing?

“No, no, no, I just wanted to ask you a few questions.” Ye Wenxin waved her hands in a fluster. The melancholy in Wen Susu’s eyes became even more pronounced as she sighed. “Do you believe the rumors out there too?”

Ye Wenxin’s confusion was growing by the second. She had only wanted to ask a question, but Wen Susu’s tone suggested she had done something extreme. Ye Wenxin had to clarify, “I’ve been looking for the Heavenly Book because I want to know some things. I have no interest in you.”

She hurriedly confessed her intentions. With the overwhelming amount of things happening recently, Ye Wenxin couldn’t afford to have Wen Susu, the Heavenly Book, flying alongside her.

Wen Susu displayed a hint of surprise. “You really don’t know?”

Ye Wenxin could only nod in response. “Honest. You can look into my memories. I have pure intentions of seeking you. I just have some questions I want you to answer.”

Wen Susu’s furrowed brows relaxed considerably. Her defensiveness now seemed amusing. She slowly sat on the floor, while the surroundings returned to their original dorm room appearance. However, the books lay in disarray, as if a dog had passed by and chewed on them.

Wen Susu carefully picked up the scattered books and page fragments, placing them in a silver basin. It was unclear whether she was holding a funeral for her books or tidying up her room.

Ye Wenxin quietly watched Wen Susu’s slow movements. It seemed she still struggled to adapt to the human body and its motions, moving at a snail’s pace. Ye Wenxin couldn’t help but speak up, “How about I help you?”

With that, she stepped towards Wen Susu. Aware that her hands and feet weren’t as nimble as a real human’s, Wen Susu didn’t refuse. She stood aside and watched as Ye Wenxin helped her clean up.

Her intent gaze resembled someone observing a toy.

Perhaps human memories were like fascinating books to a Heavenly Book. Ye Wenxin reassured herself with this thought as she quickly gathered the last pieces of torn pages before looking at Wen Susu.

“What next?”

“Burn them.”

Ye Wenxin stared incredulously at her answer.

“For us books, having all the page fragments burned together is the highest form of funeral,” Wen Susu affirmed, though her gaze seemed distant. She looked into the distance and continued mumbling to herself, “I wonder when I will find the rest of my pages.”

Ye Wenxin listened in astonishment. “You’re missing pages? Your limbs look intact to me.”
