Chapter 545: Ye Wenxin the Harvesting Machine
Unfortunately, she didn’t dare to ask for more. She held Ye Wenxin in her arms, once again feeling the fragility of humans.
“Miss Luo, are you done now?” Ye Wenxin’s emotions began to settle, and she gently nudged the kitsune holding her tightly.
The kitsune released her, brushing her hair a bit awkwardly. “Yes, I’m done.” Carefully, she placed Ye Wenxin down, worried any sudden struggle might accidentally push her off the library’s roof.
Ye Wenxin found it a little amusing but sat cautiously. She couldn’t shake the feeling she was as fragile as a mote of dust in the kitsune’s eyes, as if the slightest pressure would end her life.
Yet, it also seemed that in the kitsune’s eyes, she was the only one who mattered.
In the end, Wen Susu’s plan succeeded. The kitsune harbored thoughts toward women.
“Alright, I’ll take you back now.” The still embarrassed kitsune avoided talking about what had just happened. Ye Wenxin didn’t press her. The kitsune had taken the first step, and sooner or later, she would work through her feelings. Even though she was attracted to men, that balance would shift eventually.
Still, the thought of having been used by Wen Susu left a feeling of vexation in Ye Wenxin’s heart.
As night came and Ye Wenxin finished her tasks, she retired early. Wen Susu reappeared, casually probing Ye Wenxin’s memories until she found this recent experience.
“She made a move?” Wen Susu was astonished at how events had unfolded. Noticing she had her guard down, Ye Wenxin grabbed Wen Susu and pulled her back toward her.
“Not so rough—my body might…” Startled, Wen Susu’s fear of violence surfaced, but she didn’t dare resist.
Although she looked human, Wen Susu was, in essence, a book. Ye Wenxin’s expression soured in displeasure. “In the end, I was just another tool for you.”
Ye Wenxin seemed to have no interest in her at all. Wen Susu laughed and replied, “This is your destiny. In the future, Luo Mo will also hold a place in your life.”
Now that Ye Wenxin had already formed a connection with the kitsune, Wen Susu revealed a glimpse of the future. A smile lit up her face, showing her satisfaction with this development.
Ye Wenxin grew curious. “And who else? Am I just supposed to keep gathering people?” She thought about the people she had already bound with her peach blossom chains. The connections kept piling up. Ye Wenxin worried this trend would demand more people instead of stabilizing.
“That is a secret,” Wen Susu said with a mysterious smile, “But if you can change Luo Mo, I might let you in on a little more.”
She continued to entice her. Ye Wenxin released her grip, turned over, and lay flat on her back. “Forget it. I don’t have the time for this… The longer I stay here, the more everything else piles up. I haven’t even seen Ling Jue once yet… Yue’er is still waiting… And our one-year agreement—things will get very hard for me if I don’t go to her.”
Thinking of all the unfinished tasks on her plate, Ye Wenxin felt weary and uninterested in dealing with the complications in Liu City. The more people she got to know, the more detached she felt. She had some reluctance to continue being some harvesting machine.
“Don’t worry, things will turn around soon. I’ll leave with you once you helped Luo Mo,” Wen Susu whispered while stroking her ear.
On the surface, Wen Susu looked no different from a human, but if one carefully sniffed, there was a scent of ink, subtle and inoffensive. Ye Wenxin turned to look at Wen Susu, curiously asking, “So why don’t you try it yourself? Why involve an outsider like me to pursue your best friend?”
Wen Susu’s expression froze briefly. She hadn’t realized that her close relationship with the kitsune had been so obvious. She could see the past and future, read memories—but emotions and thoughts remained beyond her grasp. Even if she was omniscient, she couldn’t control people’s hearts.
That was the Heavenly Book’s worst flaw and why Wen Susu loved writing novels. She wanted to make up for what she didn’t know. But Ye Wenxin had noticed, and without any better excuse, Wen Susu had to admit, “We’re too familiar with each other. Besides, who would fall in love with a book?”
She pointed to herself. With the slightest exertion, she could remove her arm. Her unusually flimsy body didn’t allow for the most basic physical pursuit.
Ye Wenxin no longer found it strange as she watched Wen Susu’s fallen arm transform into pages that quickly flew back to reassemble with her body. Wen Susu brushed her dark, chestnut-colored hair and smiled at Ye Wenxin. “If I could recover my missing pages, I wouldn’t be so fragile.”
When she explained this to Ye Wenxin, her words hinted at something more. She trailed her fingers along Ye Wenxin’s face, moving slowly down from her cheek, past her nose and lips, finally reaching her neck. As her hand began to move lower, Ye Wenxin caught it.
Wen Susu paused. She hadn’t expected Ye Wenxin to stop her at this moment, yet she didn’t retract her hand. She knew Ye Wenxin was different from her idealized Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng. But she still believed that with this person, she stood a real chance of leaving Liu City and recovering what she had lost.
Ye Wenxin’s memories reminded Wen Susu again of the kind of person standing before her. Wen Susu closed her eyes and cautioned, “A kiss is acceptable, but I doubt I can handle anything beyond that.”
But instead of a sweet kiss, Ye Wenxin responded with a light knock on Wen Susu’s head before she tossed her aside.
“Who wants to do that with you? Don’t disturb my sleep,” Ye Wenxin said, exasperated. She pulled the blanket over herself and settled for sleep.
Wen Susu floated midair, looking at Ye Wenxin with a complicated expression. After a moment, her eyes brightened, and she attempted to peer into Ye Wenxin’s future. This time, however, she couldn’t see anything at all, as if some force was blocking her from glimpsing Ye Wenxin’s fate.
For the first time, Wen Susu couldn’t see the future of someone other than herself. She strained to break through the invisible barrier, desperate to understand what lay ahead for Ye Wenxin, hidden from her view.
Yet, none of her attempts bore fruit. Exhausted from the effort, Wen Susu drifted back down. She cast a bewildered look at Ye Wenxin, who lay there with her eyes closed.
