Chapter 557: The Bride is Mine

After all was said and done, the one who found it hardest to accept and was suffering the most was her. Ye Wenxin didn’t understand Wen Susu’s current state. She had made her awaken the kitsune so the kitsune would realize the object of her affections did not need to be a man.

While the kitsune was free now, Wen Susu seemed to have trapped herself within her own world. She was a book, and books should not have mortal emotions. Yet, looking at her expression, Ye Wenxin thought Wen Susu was much more alive than most people.

“Why do I feel this way?” Wen Susu asked. When it came to herself, it seemed she couldn’t get a handle on her feelings.

The Heavenly Book could grasp all matters under the heavens, yet she couldn’t handle herself. Ye Wenxin was silent before answering: “Because you envy Luo Mo. She’s able to do what you can’t. She dares to love while you don’t even have that right.”

Ye Wenxin began to spout nonsense with a straight face again. According to ancient records, the Heavenly Book came into existence ten thousand years ago, predating humanity itself. Wen Susu was merely a book then, recording everything about the world. Slowly, she evolved, gaining independent thought and emotions and, lastly, a physical form with the potential to change anything.

But the Heavenly Book was the Heavenly Book because she belonged to no one. Since ancient times, cultivators of the demon and immortal sects had pursued her. Yet, due to the library set up to keep her, very few had the opportunity to come into contact with the Heavenly Book, much less discuss questions with her as Ye Wenxin was doing now.

Ye Wenxin’s straight-faced nonsense seemed to have swayed Wen Susu. She left, quietly repeating the words Ye Wenxin had just said. Ye Wenxin assumed she would return after working things out. Then, she would get a chance to leave her mark on Wen Susu. Yet, that didn’t happen.

It was like Wen Susu had vanished.

According to the kitsune, Liu City was undergoing reconstruction after the recent Soul Evoker attack. Plans were underway to reopen the city, creating a place where demons and humans could coexist, making Wen Susu very busy. It was an idea so ambitious that it drew a bitter smile from Ye Wenxin.

Surprisingly, the kitsune had made the suggestion, not Fox King. After getting engaged to the bear demon, she assumed the role of Fox Queen. The former Fox King didn’t oppose her actions. On the contrary, he had started to appear more alert and present.

Even more surprising was the change in the red kitsune’s behavior. She used to love seeking out men. However, after spending some time in Ye Wenxin’s illusion space, she became utterly devoted to the imaginary Ye Xiaowen. She had even begun assisting the new Fox Queen with managing Liu City’s affairs. The red kitsune wholeheartedly believed in a future where demons and humans could live harmoniously.

Due to her deal with the former Fox King, Ye Wenxin stayed for another month. During this time, she managed to contact Jin Xiaoqin, who was far off at the Azure Wings Sect. Jin Xiaoqin was infuriated half to death. Had it not been for the flood of sweet nothings Ye Wenxin had written to her, she might have tracked her down to demand another long ‘confrontation’.

[If you dare to disappear without a word again, I swear I’ll find a hundred men to sleep with! — Jin Xiaoqin]

Jin Xiaoqin replied with a threat, but Ye Wenxin merely smiled. Not that the threat sounded childish or laughable. Ye Wenxin smiled because she understood Jin Xiaoqin genuinely missed her. Suddenly, Ye Wenxin missed the Azure Wings Sect, too—until she noticed more letters from other people.

[Where have you taken my master to? — Long Qing’er]

[Junior Sister, I’ve come out of seclusion but can’t find you anywhere. — Huang Hanyan]

Most of the letters were like this. Ye Wenxin sighed. She really had lingered here too long. Even though she got along swimmingly with the demons, this wasn’t home. Furthermore, she had the nagging feeling that she’d forgotten something.

Ye Wenxin read the letters in thoughtful silence. She tried to remember what might have slipped her mind. Just then, she saw Fairy Fengya leisurely floating in through the window. Despite the door being wide open, Fairy Fengya always chose the window. Perhaps it was a lingering quirk from their days as master and disciple.

Ye Wenxin noticed that Fairy Fengya was holding a dense bundle of letters herself.

“More mail from your avid fans?” Ye Wenxin teased. Thanks to her influence, Fairy Fengya had picked up on some of the odd expressions Ye Wenxin often used.

Fairy Fengya shook her head. “They’re from my senior brother, asking me to go back.” She placed the letters on the table, seemingly concerned that Ye Wenxin might doubt their authenticity. But Ye Wenxin knew what Fairy Fengya was like. No reason could keep her if she wanted to leave.

However, Ye Wenxin felt she had made little progress with Fairy Fengya during the half-year in Liu City. Perhaps while Ye Wenxin was focused on seeing the realm, Fairy Fengya had merely found a different place to space out in.

“We’ve been out for so long. It’s a pity. I had hoped we could escape together.” Two years had passed since she joined the Azure Wings Sect. Reflecting on everything that had happened recently, she sighed. She hadn’t expected to experience so many events that had never crossed her mind in such a short time.

But Fairy Fengya’s departure also reminded Ye Wenxin that it was time for her to get on with her journey.

The other woman’s long silence suggested she was also not good with partings, so she chose to be direct. “I’m leaving now.”

Ye Wenxin nodded, still pondering over the letters on the table. Fairy Fengya paused midstep. “Wenxin, aren’t you going back?”

It was the first time Fairy Fengya had taken the initiative to ask. Her question surprised Ye Wenxin. After considering it briefly, she replied, “No, I still have many things to take care of. If you don’t return soon, Senior Sister Qing’er might come charging over, kill me, and then kill herself.”

In her letter, Long Qing’er had sounded bitter, accusing Ye Wenxin of eloping with Fairy Fengya. However, it gave Ye Wenxin the strange impression that Long Qing’er might also be jealous of Fairy Fengya.

Ye Wenxin didn’t dare to keep Fairy Fengya for too long. Considering how useful she had been and could be again, Ye Wenxin offered politely, “If you ever need anything in the future, Fairy Fengya, don’t hesitate to ask for my help.”

Fairy Fengya must have already figured out most of her true identity but didn’t seem to care about any of that. Ye Wenxin planned to use her promise to continue securing a long future and the opportunity to have Fairy Fengya as a valuable tool.
