Chapter 560: You’re an Awful Person!
Ye Wenxin felt there was something subtly amusing about that word. She smirked, “What, is your memory reading malfunctioning? You need to rely on a ‘feeling’ now?”
Wen Susu caught the sarcasm in Ye Wenxin’s tone and shot her a glare. “No, her memory was sealed for a time. When it ended, she had already become second only to one. It’s like she had suddenly received enlightenment.”
Ye Wenxin found this description rather intriguing. “So the Heavenly Book can make people smarter?”
“It is the Heavenly Book’s duty to guide and spread wisdom. Every book in the world, even the ancient manuals you all fight tooth and nail to uncover, exists in my mind. That’s why people have fought over me throughout the ages, giving rise to the saying ‘He who possesses the Heavenly Book rules the world’.”
Wen Susu looked pleased with herself. Ye Wenxin was unfazed but couldn’t help the rising urge to take her down a notch.
“How come you’re in such a miserable state, then? Not only did you lose your pages, you can’t leave Liu City either,” Ye Wenxin returned with a smile. Wen Susu, who had been going on and on, went silent.
“Forget it. Let’s drop that subject. So, the Heavenly Book’s page fragments make people more knowledgeable?” Ye Wenxin summed up. Wen Susu nodded. “Yes, it’s like memory inheritance, but everything in the Heavenly Book updates constantly. I’ll be aware if a new book forms.”
Seeing her mood lighten, Ye Wenxin worried Wen Susu would start boasting about her Heavenly Book assets again. “So, how about [Record of Divine Weapons]? Can you bring it out for me to see right now?”
Wen Susu shook her head. “Ancient text are incredibly complex. I’m too exhausted to copy one out right now.”
Ye Wenxin nodded. “Then let’s go with the Azure Wings Sect’s entry-level cultivation method.”
Wen Susu appeared irritated. “Are you looking down on me?” She raised a threatening fist, thinking Ye Wenxin had insulted her Heavenly Book dignity.
Ye Wenxin gave an awkward laugh. “I was just worried you’d overwork yourself… How about something more niche? Let’s see… there’s this unofficial tale about Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng and Long Qingyue. Can you find the second volume of that?”
Recently, Ye Wenxin had learned from Fatty’s letters that there was an update to this unofficial tale. It told a story about Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng waiting for Long Qingyue in vain before eventually wandering the Martial World.
She was curious to see how the author had continued her and Long Qingyue’s story. But long after she had replied to his letter, Fatty still hadn’t sent her the latest volume. It left her rather frustrated. Now that Wen Susu, the omnipotent Heavenly Book, was here, Ye Wenxin didn’t want to miss out on utilizing her convenient powers.
“……”
Wen Susu, the author of Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng and Eldest Princess Long Qingyue’s unofficial tale, once again fell silent.
She was thrilled someone was mentioning her novel. Yet, she was also conflicted.
The character she’d written in her story was gentle and devoted. The Demon Lord in real life, however, seemed unable to read the mood. The vast difference between the book character and the real Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng led Wen Susu to rewrite the second volume.
In the new story, Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng encountered a mysterious figure of a foreign race and fell head over heels in love with her. But this other woman was not what she seemed—her true identity was that of a book demon.
Wen Susu had written it to vent out her frustration with Ye Wenxin. She hadn’t expected the second volume to become even more popular than the first. However, since she’d based the book demon character on herself as the Heavenly Book, there was no way she could let Ye Wenxin read any of it.
“Don’t tell me you can’t pull this one out either,” Ye Wenxin pressed, her eyes showing disdain.
“Can you pick a different book?” Wen Susu asked helplessly. If anyone could access this book, it would be her, the author. But the book was filled with scenes of her and a gentle Gu Qingcheng. She couldn’t bear to show it to anyone. In person, no less.
“Is the second volume that rare? Even the mighty Heavenly Book can’t bring it out?” Ye Wenxin continued teasing, but her interest in the story only grew. Her real goal was to get her hands on the book, take it to Long Qingyue, and playfully mock how inaccurate the story’s portrayal of them was while washing Long Qingyue’s feet.
At that moment, Ye Wenxin finally remembered. Her selective memory had forgotten the one-year promise with Long Qingyue. There were less than six months left until the deadline. Ye Wenxin felt she’d need to set aside the Asuka matter and inform Wen Susu of her intention to leave.
Wen Susu showed no response whatsoever.
“Even if you’ve failed as the Heavenly Book and can’t even produce a single book, I won’t hold it against you,” Ye Wenxin added, her words dripping with sarcasm once more.
The longer Ye Wenxin observed Wen Susu’s evasive behavior, the more she felt something was up.
“You’re an awful person, you know that?” Wen Susu pursed her lips in irritation and helplessness. If she didn’t produce the book, it would ruin her Heavenly Book credibility. But if she did produce the book, Ye Wenxin might notice the book demon character was based on her.
And worse yet, she’d written the fictional Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng and herself as a passionate, loving couple that called each other “my lady”. Reluctant to reveal this, she decided it was safer to bring out the Azure Wings Sect’s entry-level cultivation method manual instead.
With quiet resolve, she closed her eyes. Wen Susu’s body began to emit a faint glow, her hands lifting slightly, as if cradling something invisible. Moments later, a book materialized in her hands—its pages blank. Opening her eyes just enough to peek, Wen Susu began to recite a few words.
Words instantly appeared on the blank pages, completing in just a few seconds. Ye Wenxin watched in astonishment. She took the book into her hands and skimmed through it. Sure enough, it was a replica of the Azure Wings Sect’s cultivation method.
But this entry-level manual had no practical use to her. Now that she knew Wen Susu would not copy any ancient manuals, Ye Wenxin was ready to bid farewell.
It was a windy, moonless night—perfect for a midnight rendezvous.
“Wait, you’re still going to see Luo Mo!?” Realizing where Ye Wenxin was heading, Wen Susu quickly grabbed the hem of her robe. She was determined not to let her sneak off to meet the kitsune.
But since Ye Wenxin was planning to leave soon, she wanted a proper conversation with the kitsune. She nodded, replying, “That’s right. Your words are as good as air. I might as well break our little deal.”
“You’re so awful!”
