Chapter 564: Sure to Get Along
“I almost forgot. The knowledge within me is more than the human mind can handle. Let’s do this: I’ll give you a small fragment. It will have the same effect.” Ye Wenxin grew more perplexed as she listened to the explanation.
She watched Wen Susu sit on the bed and remove the remaining layers of her clothing.
Wen Susu’s attire became more gauze-like with each layer that transformed into an additional page. Ye Wenxin couldn’t help thinking it was an overly elaborate ritual to get a single fragment.
“Can’t you hand me the fragment in a normal way?” Ye Wenxin asked, exasperated. Wen Susu frowned slightly. “Separating a page from the Heavenly Book causes tremendous pain, so this is my method to prevent that.”
Wen Susu fully revealed her mystical domain. It was the same as a human’s but more pristine.
This whole setup of taking a fragment seemed weird to Ye Wenxin. Suddenly, Wen Susu instructed, “Reach in.”
Ye Wenxin had no choice but to do as told. Her fingertips moved without obstruction, yet she could feel the warmth of a human body. Wen Susu’s cheeks reddened slightly. She covered her mouth, trying to suppress something.
“You don’t actually feel human sensations, do you?” This scene boggled Ye Wenxin. For a book, Wen Susu’s reaction seemed more sensitive than a human’s.
“No… I’m just a book.” Wen Susu gripped the quilt tightly, gritting her teeth. In one hasty move, Ye Wenxin seized a glowing fragment.
“This is your book fragment?”
“Yes, a fragment of the most precious cover page…” Wen Susu responded weakly. Although her body was drained of energy, she tried to show off her charm.
However, it went right over Ye Wenxin’s head. She raised the fragment to observe it with her naked eye. A bunch of text flashed before her eyes in overwhelming volume. When she staggered back, the feeling eased.
“Don’t attempt to speculate on the secrets of the heavens. Even I don’t have the authority to do so.” Wen Susu watched Ye Wenxin’s reaction with schadenfreude. Ye Wenxin dared not push it. For the first time, she experienced the madness that came with knowledge and understood why people had fought tooth and nail to obtain the Heavenly Book.
To possess the Heavenly Book was to seize everything in the world. Even without martial strength, one could wield words to kill without a trace.
“Just grip this page, and you’ll be able to communicate with me,” Wen Susu explained more. Ye Wenxin nodded and tested it.
Not only could she hear Wen Susu’s voice, but she had a strange illusion that she was becoming smarter, as if she could grasp the entire world by holding the fragment.
The fragment brought with it an addictive power. It even made Ye Wenxin feel a dangerous urge to claim it as hers.
“I’m right here, yet my fragment is enough to tempt you.” Wen Susu sighed helplessly. Ye Wenxin was an enigma to her.
To say she was insatiable, she certainly didn’t show it.
But if she weren’t, then why did she seem so strangely fixated on certain things?
Ye Wenxin awkwardly smiled, not denying her thoughts about the fragment. However, she also dared not tell Wen Susu that this fragment—full of convenience—seemed more suited to her than the real thing.
Ye Wenxin couldn’t bring herself to say it out loud. From sunrise to lunchtime, the two continued talking about the trip to the Hundred Flowers Dynasty.
At the dining table, the kitsune remained as elegant and poised as a noblewoman while the envoy engaged in an enthusiastic conversation with Ye Wenxin.
She shared stories about the local customs and culture of the Hundred Flowers Dynasty. Hundred Flowers honey, Hundred Flowers nectar, all sorts of delicious pastries—it seemed every delicacy existed in the Hundred Flowers Dynasty.
The kitsune felt displeased, yet she couldn’t remind Ye Wenxin to mind her behavior with the bear demon also present.
“My lady, have some meat,” said the bear demon, who was the most pitiful one at the table without a doubt. Completely unaware the joy he’d experienced yesterday was merely an illusion the kitsune conjured, he was now earnestly doting on her.
The kitsune responded with a smile. She would cast enticing glances at Ye Wenxin, all while rubbing her ankle against Ye Wenxin’s knee—playing two roles at once. Speechless, Ye Wenxin made a show of reaching down to grab the kitsune’s foot.
Seeing Ye Wenxin’s “all-or-nothing” expression, the kitsune shot her a pleading look, silently begging for mercy. But Ye Wenxin was unmoved. She continued to test the kitsune’s nerves.
They both knew getting caught would jeopardize the kitsune’s position. Yet this surreptitious footsie game was too addictive for the kitsune to pull away. Fortunately, the conversation flowed so naturally between them that no one suspected any unspeakable relationship, let alone conceive the idea.
When the meal concluded, Ye Wenxin discreetly scattered some powder to dispel any lingering scent. Everyone remained oblivious whether the exchange under the table had been a silent battle or a subtle flirtation.
Back to her usual dignified manner, the kitsune suggested taking the envoy on a tour of the local culture and scenery. The envoy gladly agreed but insisted that Ye Wenxin accompany them.
They saw products unique to demons—animal hides, fur, teeth, venom… The demons’ anatomy possessed many useful parts.
The envoy excitedly took notes, extremely pleased to be in Liu City. Walking at the back, Ye Wenxin listened to the envoy’s prattling, “Wenxin, you absolutely must visit the Hundred Flowers Dynasty. I can’t wait to show you the breathtaking landscapes. Besides, the Flower Lord loves rabbits. You two are sure to get along wonderfully.”
If not for the envoy’s reminder, Ye Wenxin would have nearly forgotten she was still in her rabbit demon disguise. She smiled politely but had no actual interest in this so-called Flower Lord. However, the envoy seemed nostalgic for home and shared many anecdotes with Ye Wenxin. Their dynamic was less romantic and more like that of two friends.
It was fantastic for Ye Wenxin. Apart from her former roommate, Baili Mu, this was the first time she’d met someone unaffected by her charm, and it was relaxing.
The kitsune didn’t seem to feel the same way, though. She stood between the two, the picture of a regal Fox Queen. Only Ye Wenxin could tell she was probably seething with jealousy underneath.
Everyone wanted to be special in someone else’s eyes. Ye Wenxin gave a bitter smile. While she could treat each person as special, she still hadn’t found her one significant person.
And whenever this thought crossed her mind, Wen Susu’s words would haunt her like a nightmare.
“Damn Wen Susu! Why couldn’t I have been deaf back then!”
Ye Wenxin still felt uncomfortable about Wen Susu’s claim that she had feelings for Fairy Fengya. It seemed like the world’s most ridiculous joke, yet a part of her couldn’t help but take it seriously.
