Chapter 569: I, the Lowest on the Food Chain!
Ye Wenxin saw the situation was about to get out of hand. She hurriedly reached out to pull the Flower Lord back, but a shadow was already flitting past her. The small black figure instantly grew bigger, shielding the Flower Lord from the full brunt of the attack.
At a closer look, this shadow turned out to be a massive black cat.
“Big Baby?”
The black cat before her looked majestic with a sleek figure. It resembled Big Baby, who was often seen by Long Qingyue’s side. But the feeling only lasted a second before Ye Wenxin dismissed it as overthinking. Big Baby was prideful, like any demonic beast. She rarely permitted anyone to touch her. Stepping up to help others was the last thing she would do.
This black cat only glanced at Ye Wenxin. It let out a soft meow that didn’t match the Big Baby that Ye Wenxin knew. Ye Wenxin exhaled in relief but, at the same time, recalled the gaze she had noticed on the road earlier. This demonic beast must have been the culprit, which was why she had felt so unsettled.
“Flower Lord, are you alright?” Meanwhile, everyone gathered around the Flower Lord to check on her. When they saw she only sustained minor injuries, they let out collective sighs before turning their attention to the culprit—the white furball.
The white furball looked innocent. When she noticed everyone staring, she shrank and put on a harmless expression. They wanted to scold her but somehow couldn’t bring themselves to.
“I’m fine. If I hadn’t rushed forward, I wouldn’t have frightened this… ball…” When the Flower Lord spoke, it provoked the image of a seasoned female leader from the Martial World, unconstrained with formalities. Given she was not making a big fuss over it, no one bothered to direct any threats or reprimands at Ye Wenxin.
Everyone in the Hundred Flowers Dynasty seemed particularly forgiving toward animals.
“Apologies, White is a bit introverted.” Ye Wenxin offered an apology once she confirmed there was no big issue. She gently stroked the white furball. The white furball immediately lay down, exposing her round belly as she basked in Ye Wenxin’s affectionate pets. Her chubby, adorable paws came into full view, making her appear even more endearing.
The Flower Lord’s gaze was drawn to the furball again. Despite herself, she asked, “Can I pet it now?”
She seemed hesitant but deeply interested in touching the furball. Ye Wenxin chuckled and replied, “You’ll have to ask White for permission.”
“Um, White, may I pet you?” the Flower Lord asked sincerely, her eyes filled with hopeful anticipation. The white furball sized her up with tiny eyes, sniffed her a few times, and nodded in agreement.
The Flower Lord promptly approached to pet the white furball’s head. However, the black cat suddenly sprang out, challenging the white furball. The white furball seemed aware the black cat was provoking her. Yet, she ignored it outright and struck an even more endearing pose to lure the Flower Lord.
The Flower Lord soothed the black cat with a few words. She made another attempt to touch the white furball, only to be interrupted again. Stirred by some primal instinct, the black cat leaped forward. It began tussling with the white furball.
However, the furball’s true form was one out of eight Colored Flags, which meant she was not alone.
When the white furball cried “awoo,” Ye Wenxin knew things were about to go down. The white furball was about to pull everyone into an illusion.
But just as she had that thought, the other furballs suddenly appeared around them.
The seven other furballs resembled the white one except for their colors. The black cat stared in surprise but soon resumed its aggressive stance. Yet it quickly became apparent that it was no match for the furballs’ combined strength.
The furballs gained the upper hand with their sheer numbers. The black cat yowled, severely displeased with them ganging up on it. Ye Wenxin watched them with a wry smile. This victory seemed a little unfair to her. She considered saying something to ease the tension when a group of other demonic beasts suddenly appeared.
The furball wave attack seemed to have prompted the black cat to rally other nearby demonic beasts to counter them. Even the guards’ demonic beasts began to emerge on their own. Soon, a dense crowd of demonic beasts packed the area.
“Xiao Hei, stop!” the Flower Lord called out in exasperation. She couldn’t intervene in the demonic beasts’ uprising with her human form. It was also the first time she’d seen the black cat leading its brethren into action.
As the scene grew more chaotic by the second, Ye Wenxin felt she should stop it. She considered having the furballs transform into Colored Flags to restrain the demonic beasts.
A swift-moving shadow approaching from afar disrupted her thoughts.
After a careful look, she found it to be another black cat. This one looked similar to the first but had keener eyes. Upon arrival, it pinned down the first black cat and let out a few meows.
The other demonic beasts obediently dispersed when they heard this black cat’s meows. Although the whole incident unfolded and ended quickly, it gave Ye Wenxin a better understanding. The Hundred Flowers Dynasty significantly counted on demonic beasts.
“I thought we’d have another mess on our hands today.” The Flower Lord sighed, greeting the commanding black cat.
“Thank you, Big Sis.” This term of respect left Ye Wenxin slightly bewildered. She was surprised at the Flower Lord’s candid nature and willingness to acknowledge a beast as her Big Sis.
The big sister black cat let out some meows, smacking the little brother black cat’s head. She appeared to be schooling him on the proper ways of being a respectable demonic beast. Ye Wenxin observed the amusing scene in fascination.
But she noticed the big sister black cat was now staring back at her. That gaze was fiery, as though regarding Ye Wenxin as an enticing delicacy.
“You… are a rabbit?” asked the big sister black cat, her voice halting and unsteady. Perhaps she was only beginning to grasp human language.
Ye Wenxin looked at her in amazement. It was difficult for demonic beasts to learn human speech, let alone speak their mind so fluently. Clever as this black cat was, though, she had misinterpreted Ye Wenxin’s identity.
In truth, Ye Wenxin had used fur from a rabbit demon as a base to create a pill that could transform her into a rabbit demon. Unlike Xiao Zhang’s Shape-shifting Technique, this pill allowed her to mimic a rabbit demon’s scent, fooling everyone. Considering her role as Liu City’s envoy, she decided to play along.
“I am a rabbit,” Ye Wenxin replied with a nod, twitching her ears for a convincing effect. The slight movement seemed to stir an instinctual predatory response in the black cat. The big sister black cat reverted to her original form and pounced at Ye Wenxin.
However, this original form was nothing like a cat. The black cat was actually a fearsome black panther. The panther hesitated, seemingly surprised by her own predatory instincts, before saying, “Sorry, rabbits are my favorite food.”
In that instant, Ye Wenxin felt she had chosen the wrong animal for her disguise.
She glanced toward the envoy who had tricked her here, only to catch her looking away. Evidently, the envoy had intentionally omitted the existence of the big sister black cat.
“Oh, so you’re the envoy from Liu City! I’m really sorry,” the Flower Lord exclaimed in belated realization. She quickly helped Ye Wenxin up from the ground, but her eyes focused not on Ye Wenxin herself
Instead, they focused on Ye Wenxin’s rabbit ears. Her hands itched to reach out and touch them.
