Chapter 571: The Humiliating Truth
Big Baby continued her venting her grievance. Little Brother Cat, seemingly having heard this story countless times, was already dozing off nearby. Big Sis Cat wore a long-suffering expression but still dutifully interpreted everything for Ye Wenxin.
Ye Wenxin sat there, listening as Big Baby rambled on until she raised a hand to stop her.
“When Yue’er comes by, I’ll help you out. But let’s make it a mutual agreement. We’ll both get something out of it. I’ve had a few misunderstandings with Yue’er recently, so I’ll need your help, too, Big Baby.”
Big Baby agreed to Ye Wenxin’s plan without hesitation. Under the moonlit night, one human and one cat formed an alliance.
Over the next few days, Asuka was nowhere to be found. She was likely immersing herself in study to restore her honor after their last debate. Ye Wenxin knew she’d eventually come knocking and didn’t bother seeking her out. Besides, she always accompanied Envoy Hua Ju on various outings. It left her little time to bother with such inconsequential matters.
Wen Susu was very frustrated with her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t hit Ye Wenxin, so she had to settle with fuming in anger.
Ye Wenxin enjoyed this relative peace, casually scouting out Asuka’s activities while preparing for Long Qingyue’s upcoming visit.
This meeting was, after all, her most significant task this year. Even if Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng wouldn’t be the one suffering from the public declaration, Ye Wenxin couldn’t accept being branded by anyone.
During this period, Ye Wenxin also managed to win over Little Brother Cat with no effort. She bestowed him the name Erha, which meant silly but cute husky.
Little Brother Cat’s unwavering admiration for Ye Wenxin was solely because she had found him a female cat. The female cat happened to be in heat. Little Brother Cat was young and vigorous. The events that transpired were self-explanatory.
The simple-minded Little Brother Cat then became exceedingly attentive to Ye Wenxin. It made her suddenly miss Fatty, whom she hadn’t seen in a long time.
Big Sis Cat, though, was somewhat mysterious. While Little Brother Cat was able to locate her, Ye Wenxin couldn’t see Big Sis Cat at all. Thus, searching for Big Sis Cat throughout the city had become her favorite pastime.
This pastime continued for nearly half a month. Liu City also sent official demon envoys to help Ye Wenxin solidify her envoy status.
Even though the kitsune was angry at Ye Wenxin for running away, she ultimately still loved her dearly. She even worried Ye Wenxin might be uncomfortable sleeping there. So, she’d made a blanket with her shed fur, hoping Ye Wenxin could sleep every day on a blanket carrying her scent.
The kitsune’s sincere intentions left Ye Wenxin resigned, but it was useless. Items imbued with a demon’s scent would be too conspicuous in a place teeming with demonic beasts.
Ye Wenxin finally didn’t have to make up stories for the Flower Lord every day. She now had more time to play hide-and-seek with Big Sis Cat.
After three days of seeking, Ye Wenxin finally found Big Sis Cat.
However, she would have preferred not to encounter Big Sis Cat under these circumstances.
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize you were nursing.”
Big Sis Cat was surrounded by young demonic beasts, providing them the nutrients they needed to survive.
Each of them looked different. Some had missing or injured limbs—abandoned by either their parents or humans. The Hundred Flowers Dynasty showed great compassion toward animals. But when it came to the weak, it was the same as the rest of the realm.
It appeared these little demonic beasts had been saved and raised by Big Sis Cat. One with blinded eyes was biting softly on Big Sis Cat’s fur for comfort.
Big Sis Cat futilely tried to bring the little one closer to comfort it. Ye Wenxin scratched her head awkwardly and offered, “Want some help with that?”
“If it’s not too much trouble, then, Lady Wenxin,” Big Sis Cat replied in a clear voice, much improved since their last conversation. She readily accepted the offer, showing no abashment typical of humans.
Without overthinking it, Ye Wenxin carefully picked up the blind little demonic beast and guided it toward Big Sis Cat. It immediately latched on upon catching the smell. Ye Wenxin inwardly winced as she watched it feed, biting with those sharp teeth.
Big Sis Cat seemed to interpret her fascination as an interest in demonic beast breastfeeding. “Lady Wenxin, feel free to join in if you’re hungry.”
Big Sis Cat calmly shifted her posture. She even changed to her larger form to ensure Ye Wenxin could feed comfortably if she wished. Ye Wenxin vigorously shook her head, balking at the outlandish suggestion.
“It wouldn’t be fair to compete with the little ones for food.” Ye Wenxin inwardly cringed as soon as the words left her mouth. It sounded like she only felt bad for the demonic beast babies, not outright refusing the absurd offer.
Big Sis Cat let out a pleasant laugh, easing the awkward moment. Just as Ye Wenxin considered changing the topic for a quick exit, Big Sis Cat grew even more enthusiastic. “It’s no problem; they’re not too hungry today. Please, feel free to help yourself.”
Considering how nonchalant Big Sis Cat was about this, Ye Wenxin suspected the Flower Lord had done something similarly outlandish with her. It would explain why Big Sis Cat could say these things so skillfully.
Though she was curious, embarrassment prevailed. Putting on an air of modesty, she said, “Ah, but it would be embarrassing if someone else were to see.”
“But there are only demonic beasts nearby. Besides, it won’t harm a cultivator like you, Lady Wenxin.” Big Sis Cat had learned from Big Baby that Ye Wenxin was from the Azure Wings Sect. However, she didn’t know Ye Wenxin’s true identity.
She probably wouldn’t have been so amiable if she did.
Ye Wenxin struggled internally. Her curiosity battled against her rationality. After thinking for a moment, she finally leaned in. Instead of seeing her as an obstacle, the other demonic beasts cooperatively moved aside.
Ye Wenxin now felt even more awkward. She looked up to meet Big Sis Cat’s kind, maternal gaze. It seemed like Big Sis Cat was treating her as her own child.
Ye Wenxin’s physical age was only fifteen at the moment. She had also deliberately altered her height before coming here. No matter how you looked at it, she was a child. It was simply a taste test, Ye Wenxin convinced herself. Her courage mustered, she leaned in and immediately smelled a rich aroma.
Shyly opening her mouth, Ye Wenxin took a delicate sip. Realization struck her. The scent seemed hauntingly familiar. This intense aroma was almost identical to the strongest note in the spirit wine…
Just one sip pulled her into a long silence. She recalled Liu Churan’s stubborn refusal to ever reveal the recipe for the spirit wine she had made. Many more details that eluded her before now flooded her mind.
