Chapter 906: Ghosts Have Periods, Too?
“Senior Brother Mei, do you know when the exam will be held?” Ye Wenxin asked. She figured Long Qingyue wouldn’t be traveling with the imperial exam going on.
“In a month or so… Why, being a true disciple is not good enough for you?” the storyteller joked. “You want to work at court with me?”
“I’m in training, and this exam sounds like it would be an interesting experience,” Ye Wenxin said casually. Traveling with a companion was more fun than going alone.
“Wonderful!” The storyteller tapped his fan on his palm, visibly delighted. “I thought I’d have to endure the dullness of being on the road by my lonesome. Let’s go together, girl!”
“Alright,” Ye Wenxin accepted with a smile and lifted her cup. “Come, let’s toast with tea instead of wine. This one’s to you, Senior Brother Mei.”
The storyteller smiled and raised his cup, lightly tapping it against Ye Wenxin’s. Despite the heavy rain pouring outside, it couldn’t dampen their good mood.
The two agreed to set out early in the morning, had dinner, and then returned to their rooms. The furballs were back, confirming that Liu Churan and the peach blossom demon had gone to the Golden Age Dynasty.
With one of her troubles resolved, Ye Wenxin let the furballs get some proper rest. During this time, Ghost Mother stayed floating in the air. Ye Wenxin had already undone the talisman on the umbrella sword, but Ghost Mother was still angry. She glared at Ye Wenxin before running off to scare people again.
Screams sounded throughout the night. But Ghost Mother was only scaring people. Ye Wenxin let her do her thing, as holding back her nature would be a detriment to herself.
Once the night had passed and morning came, Ye Wenxin went downstairs and saw a group of warriors with dark circles under their eyes. It seemed she was the only one in the inn to sleep soundly last night.
She waited for a moment and soon saw the storyteller. He looked exhausted, with a red mark on his face. He was clearly one of the victims.
“Gui Gui, you went too far. At least spare my friend,” Ye Wenxin said helplessly.
Ghost Mother snorted in annoyance. “Please, I was very nice to your friend. Even gave him a wet dream.”
She breathed softly into Ye Wenxin’s ear, causing a cold wind to sweep through the inn. Ye Wenxin was surprised to find that Ghost Mother had improved considerably. However, no matter how much stronger she got, she could never overpower the umbrella sword’s master.
The tired storyteller saw Ye Wenxin murmuring to herself and asked with concern, “Girl, who are you talking to?”
“I have an old habit of talking to myself,” she said. “Senior Brother Mei, you look like you didn’t sleep well.”
“You have no idea.” The storyteller let out a big yawn, looking like he could fall asleep at the table at any moment. “A ghost pinned me to the bed last night. I had to slap myself to wake from the dream, and I didn’t dare go back to sleep after that.”
“A ghost? How come I didn’t feel anything?”
“That ghost woman must have a thing for men. Probably wasn’t interested in you.” The storyteller poured himself a cup of water. He couldn’t have known that the beautiful ghost woman who had tormented him all night was the same one Ye Wenxin had slept with countless times.
Ye Wenxin didn’t think much of it. Seeing Ghost Mother so angry felt almost like she was having a bad period, making her unusually irritable. According to Celestial Master Zhong’s memories, when ghosts were about to break through, their tempers would rise to the extreme. This rage needed to be vented, which was why Ye Wenxin hadn’t interfered too much, afraid it would cause Ghost Mother to get stuck during her breakthrough.
But at this rate, Ghost Mother would eventually start killing again. Ye Wenxin should probably help Ghost Mother vent her anger properly.
“Girl, let’s go buy two horses after breakfast,” the storyteller said upon seeing Ye Wenxin space out again. “It’ll make traveling faster.”
Ye Wenxin had considered flying to the Golden Age Dynasty on a flying magic item. However, it had been a while since she enjoyed the fun of land travel. Plus, it might be better to run into a few unlucky people along the way to help Ghost Mother blow off some steam.
On the other hand, using a flying magic item would get them to the Golden Age Dynasty very quickly, but the journey would lose all its fun.
So Ye Wenxin agreed and then listened as the storyteller began to talk about horses. As a former scholar and current storyteller, he was well-read and witty, making their talks far from boring for Ye Wenxin.
For half a month, the two traveled nonstop. They ran into bandits and thugs a few times, but Ghost Mother would snatch the enemies away and kill them before they could act. The storyteller felt things were getting more and more eerie. What he didn’t know was that the ghost he feared so much had been quietly absorbing Ye Wenxin’s Yin energy.
Ghost Mother’s semi-transparent body began to glow with a faint blue light, covering nearly her entire figure. It looked like her evolution would be complete by tonight.
Ye Wenxin knocked the storyteller unconscious early on and had the furballs watch over him. She then carried Ghost Mother to a place rich in spiritual energy.
The area around the waterfall was nestled between mountains and rivers, surrounded by countless fireflies, making the night appear especially beautiful. Ghost Mother sat motionless in the middle of the water, eyes tightly closed, lips pressed together, and her expression unreadable.
Since Ghost Mother remained silent, Ye Wenxin said nothing either. She lay down on a nearby rock while also guarding Ghost Mother.
Suddenly, Ghost Mother’s eyes opened. Her dark green hair slowly turned black, and her dark green eyes shone brightly in the dark. The fireflies continued fearlessly flying around her. As they got closer, crackling sounds filled the air, but they didn’t die. More and more fireflies gathered around, surrounding Ghost Mother, making her look like a glowing oval of light.
Ye Wenxin wondered what new trick Ghost Mother’s evolution might bring when the glowing oval suddenly cracked open and light burst out. Amidst that light, something broke out of its cocoon.
A strong wave of bloodlust spread out. Ye Wenxin looked up and saw something rushing toward her. It struck her in the blink of an eye, sending her flying into the waterfall.
That explosive power told Ye Wenxin Ghost Mother’s evolution was complete. Her armor had become even more elaborate, and she now had a sword in her hand. Her dark green eyes carried a sharp, chilling air.
It was almost as if the evolution had made Ghost Mother’s personality cold and aloof.
Ghost Mother moved again, this time without any restraint. She swung her sword toward Ye Wenxin, splitting the lake’s once calm surface in two as Ye Wenxin nimbly dodged. She even sliced the distant waterfall apart. Ghost Mother’s power was astonishing after her breakthrough but still far from enough to defeat Ye Wenxin.
Seeing Ghost Mother so full of fighting spirit, Ye Wenxin smirked and returned to her true form. She now wore a dress as red as blood. Thousands of flowers bloomed around her, dyeing the moonlit night in brilliant red.
Ye Wenxin would let Ghost Mother know that no matter how strong she became, a master was no existence to be defied or disrespected.
TL: Ghost pin you to bed is also Chinese term for sleep paralysis, but here it’s used literally.
