Chapter 916: I Want to Be a Good Person
Even as she said “So scary,” the look in Ghost Mother’s eyes as she met Ye Wenxin’s gaze was flirtatious. On the carriage ride afterward, Ghost Mother refused to let go. Ye Wenxin worried about drawing too much attention, so she only struggled lightly.
But Ghost Mother had no intention of backing off. Feeling helpless, Ye Wenxin reached her hand downward, attempting to subtly cop a feel, hoping it would put off Ghost Mother as always.
However, Ghost Mother didn’t pull away. She seemed eager to take things further, right here, with everyone else around.
“Senior Brother Mei, are you tired? How about letting me drive instead?” Ye Wenxin had to switch to Plan B. Since the original coachman was dead, they had to return to town to find another one. So, the storyteller had taken over the reins temporarily.
“That’s alright…” came the reply.
The storyteller had intended to say he was tired but remembered he hadn’t had a chance to show any manly bravado in front of Ghost Mother. He immediately changed his tune and started acting tough.
Ye Wenxin firmly pushed Ghost Mother back into her seat, then stepped outside to whisper a few words to the storyteller.
The storyteller promptly handed the reins to Ye Wenxin. She drove the carriage down the road, thinking she might avoid Ghost Mother’s lethal advances while out in the driver seat. But not even three breaths later, Ghost Mother came out.
“What is it that you like about me? Tell me so I can change.”
Ye Wenxin’s voice shook with frustration. She was starting to realize how hard it was to be a good person. Ghost Mother looked at her confusedly. However, after processing it, she quickly sat down beside Ye Wenxin. “Isn’t it only right for a servant to attend to her master?”
She had spoken very softly, but Ye Wenxin was certain Han Shanxue heard. Meanwhile, Fei Chai and the storyteller remained oblivious to the ambiguous entanglement between her and Ghost Mother.
Ye Wenxin decided to ignore Ghost Mother and focus on driving the carriage. After an hour, they finally returned to the previous town.
The innkeeper didn’t find Ye Wenxin’s report surprising and quickly arranged for a new coachman. Concerned the same situation might repeat itself, Ye Wenxin let Fei Chai and the others go ahead before leisurely bringing Ghost Mother out.
The polite new coachman nearly stumbled when he saw Ghost Mother. His reaction convinced Ye Wenxin he wasn’t an assassin, and she resumed their journey with peace of mind.
“Miss, are you thirsty?”
“Miss, are you hungry?”
The men treated Ghost Mother like a princess. Ye Wenxin held no appeal to them, while Han Shanxue was far too intimidating. So, the lovely and approachable Ghost Mother naturally became their favorite.
And Ghost Mother’s pitiful demeanor strongly evoked protectiveness in others. If Ye Wenxin and Ghost Mother had started off this way, maybe she wouldn’t have the constant urge to bully her.
Ye Wenxin once again pulled out [The Demon Lord’s Unofficial History, Volume 1], intending to use it as a shield against the gazes around her. But this time, she sensed something different.
Fei Chai and the storyteller were busy chatting with Ghost Mother. That left Han Shanxue as the only other person in the carriage. Maybe she was cold on the outside but warm on the inside? Ye Wenxin casually set the book down and then called out to the coachman, “Big brother, could we stop for a moment?”
The man outside instantly agreed. He’d been waiting for a chance to stop so he could interact with Ghost Mother.
Of course, the coachman didn’t question why Ye Wenxin wanted to stop. They were in the middle of nowhere, and there were only a few possible reasons for stopping now.
Ghost Mother watched Ye Wenxin run off and immediately followed her. “Miss Ye, I’ll go with you,” she said.
The gentle demeanor she’d shown the others earlier vanished once she got far enough away. Rubbing her face, which had gone stiff from smiling too much, she muttered, “Why is pretending to be human so exhausting?”
“Why are you following me?” Ye Wenxin asked.
Ghost Mother gave her a puzzled look. “Didn’t you want me to? Time is short, let’s make it quick.” She began to untie her sash, planning to use this moment to finish what Ye Wenxin hadn’t done to her last night.
Ye Wenxin despaired. After corrupting Hei Tong, it seemed she’d now ruined Ghost Mother, too. She’d be shocked if this version of Ghost Mother didn’t end up running into Immortal Lord Taohua’s arms.
Ye Wenxin looked resigned. She tried to explain to Ghost Mother that her previous wild and demanding behavior had been the result of her cheat’s side effect. But now, she had returned to her old cool-headed self from when she’d been the Demon Lord. Although she still had certain thoughts, it was nothing as excessive as before.
“I don’t understand.”
Ghost Mother’s eyes looked even more impatient. She was convinced that Ye Wenxin was going to abandon her and run off to live happily ever after with that damned Liuli.
As she moved closer and closer, Ye Wenxin took a step back. “In short, from now on, I won’t do anything bad to you without your consent. I… I want to be a good person,” she said sincerely.
Ghost Mother looked like she suddenly realized something. Ye Wenxin thought she had finally understood such complex emotions.
But Ghost Mother urged, “Hurry up. It’ll be bad if they come looking for us.”
While she braced herself for a storm of passion, Ye Wenxin felt like snow had covered her heart. She helped Ghost Mother fix her clothes.
“What are you doing?” Ghost Mother asked.
“We don’t have much time,” Ye Wenxin told her.
Ghost Mother finally understood. Ye Wenxin always needed several hours before letting her go. However, even after hearing those words, something still seemed off. She had intended to assert her dominance and drive Liuli away. How had their relationship reverted to the way they used to be?
But still—
“What are you standing there for?” Ye Wenxin called. “Hurry up. They’ll think I did something to you.”
Ghost Mother quickly caught up, unable to resist grabbing Ye Wenxin’s hand. The smile on her face was innocent, tinged with something unreadable.
Ye Wenxin had no idea what was going on in Ghost Mother’s head. She could only hope that her desire to be a good person had reached Ghost Mother’s heart and that Ghost Mother wouldn’t ditch her for Immortal Lord Taohua.
“You’re back. Let’s keep going.”
The others saw Ye Wenxin and Ghost Mother returning. They didn’t ask much, probably assuming the two had gone for a bathroom break. Ye Wenxin didn’t bother to explain.
In truth, once cultivators had reached the Nascent Soul stage, they no longer needed to eat, excrete, or bathe. However, they still required food and pills containing spiritual energy to enhance their physical constitution.
So even though basic needs like grain consumption were out of the picture, cultivation remained an extremely expensive pursuit.
