Chapter 921: This Wave is Not a Loss~
“Master, let’s go up,” said Ghost Mother.
Ye Wenxin looked up at the sky and the veiled moon. It was an ideal time and place for ghosts to absorb Yin energy. She nodded and lifted Ghost Mother into her arms.
A blush spread across Ghost Mother’s face. “Master, don’t carry me! I can fly on my own!” she exclaimed in a fluster, caught off guard by Ye Wenxin’s bold move.
“Oh. Go by yourself, then.”
Ghost Mother had been about to struggle when Ye Wenxin her down. Ghost Mother blinked but then realized this was just how Ye Wenxin was. She flew into the sky, picked a spot, and began meditating to circulate her qi.
Ye Wenxin summoned the furballs, instructing them to patrol the area and drive off passersby. She wasn’t sure what would happen when a ghost broke through in cultivation, but minimizing potential collateral damage might be best.
The furballs unhappily went off to patrol. Ye Wenxin also took out her golden pen and inscribed wards around them, forming a barrier to minimize her presence within the Golden Age Dynasty.
She worked with more focus than when she had her own breakthrough. She didn’t know whether it was because the peach blossom demon lingered too heavily on her mind or she was gradually changing from spending time with Ghost Mother.
Ye Wenxin looked back at Ghost Mother, quietly waiting for the breakthrough to begin.
Time passed slowly. An hour slipped without notice, and Ghost Mother remained seated in meditation. Suddenly, the dark energy surrounding her surged, and the wandering ghosts nearby gathered around her. As they howled and shrieked, clouds and winds swirled, blocking the moon.
When Ye Wenxin looked up, she saw that the wandering ghosts had blocked the moonlight with their power. Her expression grew complicated. These forlorn souls were no different from moths flying into flame. Yet they seemed equally stubborn, forming around Ghost Mother, looking almost like a wall of ghosts.
The overwhelming surge of baleful energy made Ye Wenxin frown. Even though she had erected a barrier, she hadn’t imagined the disturbance would be this great. Long Qingyue must have sensed this from the Golden Age Dynasty’s imperial palace.
Ye Wenxin sighed, flourished her golden pen, and a large 封 (seal) character appeared. She added it to her massive barrier formation, trying to suppress the force from becoming too conspicuous.
But the wandering ghosts paid no mind to Ye Wenxin’s efforts. They continued to gather until they blotted out all moonlight. These spirits, barely clinging to existence, supported one another. Ye Wenxin found the scene strangely touching before the stronger ghosts began to devour the weaker ones. Soon after, their forms gradually shifted, but they didn’t stop consuming the other ghosts.
Another hour passed. Only four wandering ghosts remained. After devouring countless souls, they transformed into Ghost Kings. They now possessed intelligence and looked at each other with emotion. Ye Wenxin wondered what ritual this could be when Ghost Mother opened her eyes.
The four Ghost Kings immediately prostrated themselves before her, their expressions reverent. Ghost Mother muttered something unintelligible, and the Ghost Kings nodded, transforming into four light orbs. Ghost Mother swallowed them whole.
The ground trembled. Ghost Mother let out a thunderous roar, her eyes glowing. Her skin split and fell away, revealing a nearly identical figure.
However, this version seemed more mature. Her appearance had shifted from a sixteen-year-old girl to a woman in her twenties. Her ghost horns had diminished, but the power she emanated was much stronger.
Ghost Mother seemed curious about her new powers. She stretched a finger toward the sky, and the churning black clouds immediately compressed into a single, dense mass. Amusement flickered in her expression. A wave of her finger reshaped the clouds into an enormous skull face.
Thunder cracked, and lightning flashed. Anyone who happened to glance skyward at that moment would likely be scared to death by the giant skull looming in the heavens. After completing her display, Ghost Mother exhaled a long, relaxed breath and turned to Ye Wenxin with a sweet smile.
“Master, I did it!” she exclaimed, flying joyfully toward Ye Wenxin. Yet beneath that joy lurked bloodlust.
Without batting an eye, Ye Wenxin pressed down Ghost Mother’s unruly clawed hand. She finally understood the reason behind Celestial Master Zhong’s past warnings. Thankfully, Ghost Mother had undergone her breakthrough independently. If she had merged with Sword Ghost, Ye Wenxin would’ve needed to cling to Fairy Fengya’s thigh to subdue her.
But they hadn’t merged. So Ye Wenxin could handle Ghost Mother with ease.
“Not bad,” she said.
“Just ‘not bad’?”
Ghost Mother pouted. Getting a compliment from Ye Wenxin felt harder than ascending to the heavens. But seeing those calm eyes, she realized this wasn’t enough to faze her. She smiled again and said, “Oh, right. Master, I got something good during my breakthrough.”
Ye Wenxin finally showed surprise. She saw Ghost Mother touching something around her throat. It was a necklace.
“What is that?” Ye Wenxin asked. The beads on the necklace resembled Yin-Yang Pearls. There were four, and they seemed like they could fit together. Ye Wenxin looked at them suspiciously.
“Master, drip a little blood on it. You’ll see,” Ghost Mother tempted. Ye Wenxin raised a hand in her usual forehead-flicking gesture, thinking she was craving her blood again.
Ghost Mother quickly covered her forehead and explained, “Master, trust me one more time!”
“I keep feeling you’re trying to con me,” Ye Wenxin said flatly.
“But I’m telling the truth! This necklace came from those four Ghost Kings. I drained them, and I’ll need your help to restore them. Besides, you can command the Ghost Kings if you drip your blood on the beads.”
Although Ye Wenxin was still reluctant to part with her precious blood, having four Ghost Kings under her command brought various possibilities.
To guard against any new tricks from Ghost Mother, Ye Wenxin had her remove the necklace first. Ghost Mother looked disgruntled but obediently took it off. The necklace transformed into a bracelet the moment it left her neck. Ye Wenxin didn’t wear it but nicked her finger and carefully dripped blood onto each bead.
The beads lit up, and four identical ghosts emerged. They were humongous with greenish faces and sharp teeth. Upon seeing Ye Wenxin, they dropped to their knees.
Ghost Mother grew anxious at the sight. “Hey! I’m the Ghost Mother here!”
“Apologies, Honored Mother. But since you allowed the master to bind us with blood, by right, we now serve her, not you.”
All four Ghost Kings replied in unison, leaving Ghost Mother so furious she nearly exploded.
