Chapter 937: What a Small World
After hearing the description, Young Master Lü was certain the woman must be Miss Yue. He left his servant some instructions and led the group toward the library.
As they neared the library entrance, Ye Wenxin noticed someone had gotten there before them. The man turned his head, revealing himself to be Yu Xian.
Young Master Lü also saw him and yelled, “Yu Xian, it’s you again!”
“What, you’re allowed to show up, but I can’t wander around?!” Yu Xian scoffed coldly, still resentful after his men’s defeat yesterday. Today, he had a few more Nascent Soul–stage cultivators and his younger sister with him.
Compared to her aggressive brother, the girl looked helpless. Still, she had followed him here to see the woman who had driven two friends of over ten years to turn against each other.
“Get out of the way!”
“Is this road yours? You get out of the way!”
Soon enough, Young Master Lü and Yu Xian realized they were here for the same reason. The two started scuffling, leaving their entourages awkwardly staring at each other.
Ye Wenxin wondered whether to take preemptive action when a voice boomed out.
“The Six Academy is sacred ground! How dare you cause a ruckus here!”
Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to look at the speaker. An elderly man glared fiercely at Young Master Lü and Yu Xian.
“Dean Long.”
“Dean Long.”
The two immediately scrambled to their feet and lowered their heads. They seemed terrified of the man.
Ye Wenxin curiously glanced at him a few times. She found it novel to see someone other than a certain handful of people bearing the surname Long. It was probably not the dean’s original surname but one granted to him after generations of loyal service to the royal family.
He was likely a staunch supporter of Long Qingyue’s faction.
Ye Wenxin scanned the surroundings. Judging from this development and the events that had unfolded the last few days, it was only a matter of time before Long Qingyue appeared. However, aside from the dean lecturing Young Master Lü and Yu Xian, nothing notable occurred.
The hired guards grew even more awkward as they watched their noble masters standing with buckets in hand. Both held considerable status in the imperial capital yet couldn’t keep their heads high before this ordinary dean.
The dean eventually grew tired of lecturing and sat on a nearby chair. His gaze turned toward the library as if expecting someone.
Ye Wenxin glanced at the miserable-looking Young Master Lü. Since he was in no shape to act, she might as well investigate the library. About to head upstairs, she saw someone coming down the staircase. Seeing that it was another elder, Ye Wenxin stopped in her tracks.
The old man noticed Ye Wenxin’s respectful behavior and gave her a slight smile as he descended. He held a chessboard under his arm, his face smug.
“Old Yuan, you finally came down!” The dean joyfully called out to him.
“Old Yuan? Could he be General Yuan?” Someone among the onlookers recognized the old man as none other than the retired General Yuan Zhengyu.
The appearance of this prominent figure at Six Academy instantly stirred excitement among those nearby. General Yuan seemed used to such reactions. He smiled at the crowd, then turned and glanced up the stairs.
Before long, several more elders came down. Although they weren’t imperial officials, each was a legendary master renowned across the land for their skill in a specialized area. The crowd grew larger, yet no one could figure out why so many big figures had gathered in Six Academy.
“Young Master Lü, you said Miss Yue challenged four great scholars. Is she challenging these seniors now?” A thought struck Ye Wenxin. Miss Yue must be truly extraordinary.
Young Master Lü looked startled but quickly shook his head. “That shouldn’t be possible. She looks no older than fifteen or sixteen. No matter how monstrously talented she is, she couldn’t be challenging so many seniors.”
Yu Xian nodded in agreement. Ye Wenxin wondered if she might be overthinking things. Suddenly, all the elders turned in unison to face the library.
Footsteps drew closer and closer. The first thing that came into view was a pair of white shoes inlaid with gold and jade, followed by pristine white robes. When the crowd finally saw the person’s face, they gasped.
While everyone else was stunned by the girl’s beauty, Ye Wenxin thought she looked incredibly familiar.
A simple ornament adorned her long, silky hair. Her brows were like brushstrokes, her eyes limpid like water. Light pink tinged her lips, and her delicate features exuded elegance and nobility.
She glanced at the crowd and quirked her lips, yet that small gesture was enough to hold everyone’s gaze captive. This Long Qingyue had more youthful features, resembling how she had looked when Ye Wenxin first met her.
Ye Wenxin would never forget the stunning sight of Long Qingyue wearing women’s clothing for the first time. She never imagined that, years later, she would see her like this again. Her heartbeat slowed for a few moments before suddenly speeding up. She couldn’t even tell what emotion had stirred such a conflicting reaction.
But Long Qingyue acted as though she hadn’t seen Ye Wenxin.
“Thank you for today, elders.” She bowed slightly to the elders. “Yue’er has learned much from your guidance.”
The elders’ expressions were a bit complicated. They had originally planned to teach this beautiful junior a lesson, only to find themselves thoroughly defeated, without even a chance to strike back.
Fortunately, Long Qingyue tactfully refrained from saying that out loud and continued chatting with the group. Surrounded by a crowd of elderly men and women, she stood out strikingly.
Seeing Young Master Lü staring infatuatedly at Long Qingyue, Ye Wenxin sought clarification. “Young Master Lü, don’t tell me that’s Miss Yue?”
“Yes, that is her,” Young Master Lü quickly replied. He noticed Ye Wenxin’s strange expression and added sheepishly, “I know I’m not worthy of her, but I’ll work hard.”
Ye Wenxin smiled but didn’t dare say, ‘You will never be worthy of her,’ for fear of upsetting him. She had assumed “Miss Yue” was an ordinary girl. Hence, she’d proposed such a bold deal. But Long Qingyue was inscrutable, even to her. Ye Wenxin would consider herself lucky if Long Qingyue didn’t toy with her.
