Chapter 938: A Tiny Bit Behind Fairy Fengya
Ye Wenxin had planned to talk to Long Qingyue during the recruitment and casually bring up the peach blossom demon. But Long Qingyue’s sudden appearance had disrupted her plans.
Ye Wenxin, who had been feeling full of herself, now felt like a punctured tire. She couldn’t muster even the smallest wave anymore, and her mood had taken a turn for the worse.
Seeing Ye Wenxin’s subtle expressions, Ghost Mother grew even more worried. She remembered how Long Qingyue had reacted with revulsion upon seeing her and Ye Wenxin kissing. She thought of how Liu Churan would gnash her teeth every time Long Qingyue was mentioned. That unfathomable aura Long Qingyue always carried. It all put Ghost Mother on edge.
Ghost Mother grabbed Ye Wenxin’s arm and whispered in her ear. “Master, this woman has gotten even stronger.”
The voice was like a chilly breeze that made Ye Wenxin shiver, but it brought her back to her senses. Regaining her composure, she realized she had probably overthought things. No matter what, there was affection between them.
After calming her racing heart, Ye Wenxin carefully observed Long Qingyue’s final contest against the dean. The categories were poetry and calligraphy. Although a transmigrator from Earth, Long Qingyue never relied on Earth’s poems to fool the crowd. She had unique ideas and style and won this showdown with grace.
The old masters accepted their defeat. Aside from General Yuan and the dean, most probably didn’t even realize that the girl before them was the famed and all-powerful Eldest Princess Long Qingyue.
Long Qingyue’s victory was clean and decisive. After the contest ended, she didn’t spare a glance at Ye Wenxin before turning to leave. Whether she was playing hard to get or Ye Wenxin wasn’t part of her script, it seemed Long Qingyue had no intention of engaging with her.
Ye Wenxin thought that was probably for the best, yet felt uneasy. She once again realized Long Qingyue had come to her first while she had done nothing but remain passive.
A relationship would lose the ability to progress or change if it fell into a fixed pattern. Ye Wenxin even wondered if Long Qingyue had given up on being her best friend because of her passivity.
Clenching her fists, Ye Wenxin gave the dazed Young Lord Lü a light push. Young Master Lü hurriedly set down the water bucket and ran over, offering a slight bow to Long Qingyue.
“Miss Yue, please wait!”
Long Qingyue looked at him with confused eyes as if he were a stranger.
“Do you need something, sir?” she asked.
Young Master Lü blushed, at a loss for words. He looked at Ye Wenxin, silently asking for help.
Exasperated, Ye Wenxin stepped forward and spoke. “Hello, Miss Yue. My young master would like to invite you to a meal.” Since Long Qingyue had no intention of acknowledging Young Master Lü, she directly explained his purpose.
Long Qingyue froze. She had been shocked to see Ye Wenxin and thought Ye Wenxin had finally come to her for once. But by the look of it, Ye Wenxin was working for this man.
Considering this was irrelevant to her plans, Long Qingyue declined.
“No time.”
Ye Wenxin grinned and quickly replied, “Alright then. See you next time, Miss Yue!”
Long Qingyue felt disgruntled. Ye Wenxin had grown insolent after not seeing her for so long. Still, her expression remained calm as she added, “I’ll be free tomorrow.”
Ye Wenxin instantly regretted not keeping her emotions in check.
Pretending not to see the subtle reaction, Long Qingyue fixed her gaze on Ye Wenxin’s employer, Young Master Lü. “If you want to compete with me in calligraphy or painting, I’ll make time,” she said.
Young Master Lü was so excited that he couldn’t speak, so he bobbed his head. Long Qingyue smiled softly and shifted her gaze to Ghost Mother. Her pupils narrowed.
After the woman had traumatized her last time, Ghost Mother instantly assumed Long Qingyue was about to strike. She quickly clutched Ye Wenxin’s arm, seeking protection.
Ye Wenxin felt awkward but said nothing, watching Long Qingyue leave.
Quiet returned to the academy, but everyone present had a lasting impression. Whether in talent or beauty, Long Qingyue had become the center of attention.
Ye Wenxin had no desire to speak. Her mind spun with ten thousand possibilities as to why Long Qingyue had shown up at the Six Arts Academy.
But she was sure it wasn’t for her.
“Had I known, I would have warned her about the peach blossom demon, and then we wouldn’t even have to meet tomorrow,” Ye Wenxin muttered. She deeply regretted forgetting to bring up the matter upon seeing Long Qingyue. Her sudden appearance had caught Ye Wenxin off guard.
She wasn’t afraid but nervous and uneasy. She didn’t want to leave another bad impression on Long Qingyue. The woman had been her first mentor and friend. Without her, there would be no Ye Wenxin.
Yet, Ye Wenxin felt that they could never return to how they once were after everything that had happened since. Long Qingyue might appear gentle and graceful, but she was even more possessive than Liu Churan. Ye Wenxin was determined to resist this dangerous temptation to avoid becoming Long Qingyue’s collection.
However, Long Qingyue treating her like a treasured possession might not be so bad.
Conflicting thoughts swirled in Ye Wenxin’s mind, but reason managed to suppress them.
……
The sky gradually darkened. Feeling exceptional after getting to speak with Long Qingyue, Young Master Lü treated everyone to a meal. For convenience, they chose the inn where they stayed.
On the way, Fei Chai chatted with the storyteller about Long Qingyue’s beauty. “Miss Yue is too beautiful.”
The storyteller nodded in agreement. “Yeah, just a tiny bit behind Fairy Fengya.”
Ye Wenxin’s gaze was on him as soon as he said those words.
“What is it, Junior Sister Ye?” asked the storyteller. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Ye Wenxin had thought the storyteller didn’t notice. She awkwardly rubbed her nose. “Nothing, I just thought you shouldn’t compare any woman to Fairy Fengya.”
The storyteller looked confused. He thought being compared to the world’s most beautiful woman should be high praise.
“Not every woman likes Fairy Fengya,” Ye Wenxin added, recalling the setbacks she’d suffered at Fairy Fengya’s hands.
The more outstanding a woman was, the less she liked being compared to others. Long Qingyue was no exception. Ye Wenxin could already imagine the storyteller saying something like that in her presence and getting himself killed without even knowing why.
