Chapter 939: Supporting a Female Lead
“Fair enough,” the storyteller acknowledged. “But you like Fairy Fengya a lot, don’t you, Junior Sister Ye? Why did you reject her offer to become her disciple?”
Ye Wenxin’s mouth twitched. His every sentence seemed more dangerous than the last.
These were things Long Qingyue wouldn’t want to hear. Yet, the storyteller had skillfully avoided every safe topic and gone straight for the ones that could get him killed.
“Senior Brother Mei, we’ve known each other for a while, so let me give you friendly advice. When you see Miss Yue tomorrow, talk less and observe more. Otherwise, you’ll ruin Young Master Lü’s chances with her.”
“Why? I’m asking the simplest questions,” the storyteller replied in bafflement.
Ye Wenxin had no energy to explain or even talk anymore. Thanks to Long Qingyue’s abrupt appearance, what was supposed to be a pleasant, carefree day of teasing kids had become anything but.
Ye Wenxin started to regret coming here. She should’ve just sent Long Qingyue a message to warn her about the peach blossom demon. Now, she’d put herself in a stressful situation.
Ye Wenxin had a feeling she’d be dreaming about Immortal Lord Taohua and those mirror-image women again tonight. She quietly sighed and noticed Han Shanxue glancing at her.
Han Shanxue had been so low-key today that Ye Wenxin had barely registered her presence. Now that she thought about it, Han Shanxue had been absent when they saw Long Qingyue. Ye Wenxin was curious about where she had gone yet didn’t ask.
Suddenly, Han Shanxue reached out to hand her something.
Ye Wenxin reflexively took it and saw a tiny object wrapped in kraft paper, only about the size of a thumb. Why had Han Shanxue given her this?
“Is this for me?” she asked.
Han Shanxue nodded before casually taking another one from her bag of holding. She unwrapped the kraft paper, lifted her veil slightly, and popped it into her mouth so quickly that Ye Wenxin didn’t even glimpse her face.
Ye Wenxin’s poison resistance had significantly improved, so she didn’t hesitate to unwrap the paper and eat the candy-like item. A cool sensation spread in her mouth.
It was reminiscent of peppermint candy, but Ye Wenxin could tell this was no confectionary. It was a very low-grade Clarity Pill. Maybe Han Shanxue had noticed her agitation and hoped the pill could help.
Ye Wenxin smiled faintly, her mood noticeably lifting. She and Han Shanxue seemed to have grown closer.
“Thanks,” she said.
Han Shanxue didn’t look at her again. Her face remained indifferent as if Ye Wenxin’s troubled mind had imagined that small exchange.
“Speaking of candy, I’ve got some, too. Hehe. Consider this a thank-you gift for your candy.”
Ye Wenxin extravagantly handed Han Shanxue a bottle of ninth-grade Vitality Pills.
Han Shanxue immediately noticed their high quality and stopped in her tracks. Ninth-grade Vitality Pills were incredibly valuable and had an extremely low success rate to refine, yet there were ten in the bottle.
One ninth-grade Vitality Pill was enough to make a minor sect go mad with greed. As a gift, it carried obvious weight.
But Ye Wenxin’s real intention was to support this female lead without making it too obvious. She wanted to provide her with enough resources to raise her cultivation level. Still, this move had been a bit too blatant, so she added a brief explanation.
“Plenty of experts will be at the recruitment event. I want to get close to Long Qingyue. To help me achieve that, you must become stronger.”
Han Shanxue said nothing, so Ye Wenxin assumed she accepted the explanation and sighed with relief.
Ye Wenxin hurried to catch up with the rest of the group, who were already several meters ahead.
The others had no idea about the two’s little exchange and were still busy discussing dinner.
“What should we eat tonight?”
“Meat, obviously! And wine!”
Leading the way with a bright smile on his face was Young Master Lü. But that cheerful expression didn’t last long. His footsteps halted upon setting foot inside the inn, and his smile froze.
“Fang Lü? What are you doing here?!” exclaimed a woman in surprise.
Ye Wenxin thought she’d heard the voice somewhere before. She poked her head forward to look.
The woman was Sister Hong, manager of the Treasure Pavilion. She leveled a stern look at Young Master Lü. Ye Wenxin could see the two were close.
The lively and cheerful Young Master Lü timidly called out “Sister,” revealing to everyone his relationship with Sister Hong.
Everyone had heard that Young Master Lü had an older sister, but Ye Wenxin had never asked for her name. What a small world.
Sister Hong almost immediately noticed Ghost Mother at his side and reached out to twist Young Master Lü’s ear. “You brat! Are you wasting money chasing girls again?!”
The sight overturned Ye Wenxin’s previous impression of Sister Hong. She wasn’t sure whether to be relieved that the young woman hadn’t spotted her or thankful she had no older siblings to bully her like that.
“Sister, I’m doing no such thing!” Young Master Lü’s face turned beet red, and his hands flailed, trying to break free, to no success. Sister Hong raised an eyebrow, not buying his excuse. Pointing at Ghost Mother, she demanded to know her identity.
“Miss, this is a misunderstanding!” Fei Chai spoke up for Young Master Lü after seeing how pitiful he looked. “She’s our travel companion. Young Master Lü hired us to be his bodyguards.”
Sister Hong glared fiercely at him. Young and afraid of fearsome women, Fei Chai instantly shut his mouth.
Young Master Lü quickly voiced his agreement, but Sister Hong yanked his ear even harder.
“Bodyguards?” she said, suppressed fury coming through her voice. “So you’ve been off brawling, is that it?”
Ye Wenxin instinctively touched her own ear as she watched, inwardly cringing in sympathy.
“It isn’t like that! Miss Ye, save me!” Young Master Lü was on the verge of breaking down. He looked pleadingly at Ye Wenxin, knowing the other two men were unreliable, Han Shanxue was taciturn, and Ghost Mother was just there to look pretty.
Ye Wenxin hadn’t expected to be thrown to the wolves so quickly, but his cry for help drew Sister Hong’s gaze her way. Upon seeing Ye Wenxin, she finally released Young Master Lü’s ear, mustering a stiff smile while feeling extremely awkward.
“Miss Hong, Young Master Lü hasn’t done anything outrageous. He saw we were down on our luck and offered us work.” Ye Wenxin, equally awkward, chose to speak on her employer’s behalf.
“I see. You should’ve said so before I wrongly accused my brother, Celestial Master Ye.” Sister Hong’s hands kept fidgeting. It seemed she was here for Ye Wenxin but had inadvertently shown her such a scene.
