Chapter 63: The Past

The cake was done, but she wasn’t in a hurry. She was home alone for lunch, and Qin Ruyan didn’t have much of an appetite, so she just ate a few bites.

At the dining table, she slowly ate her lunch while looking at her phone.

After receiving the funds she transferred, Cheng Yubai sent her a kneeling and calling daddy emoji. She found it a bit funny and replied with a few words.

Beijing University Medical Laboratory.

Cheng Yubai was like a fish in water here.

All the teachers in the various laboratories gave him face. Not to mention the Cheng family, a medical dynasty behind him, he himself had a high medical talent and was the youngest known student in China to have completed the International Medical Course.

Now, Cheng Yubai had brought his own funds to Beijing University’s Medical Department, set up a new medical laboratory, and even became a part-time teacher in the department. How could they not be happy?

Just from the fact that Cheng Yubai had crushed other students from different countries in the International Medical Course, graduated early, and was even retained, you could tell he was no ordinary person. Moreover, with his arrival and his own resources, the admission score for Beijing University’s Medical School would probably soar to new heights.

Cheng Yubai had contacted Qin Ruyan a few days ago. He didn’t know what she was doing, but whenever he was short of experimental funds, it was Qin Ruyan who transferred the money to him.

This time, he came to Beijing University’s Medical Laboratory and invested his own fortune. But now he was out of money again.

He felt quite embarrassed. Qin Ruyan had provided him with three years of funding, and he had published many SCI papers. Every time, he wanted to include Qin Ruyan’s name, but she never allowed it, saying that if he dared to add her name, they would be over.

He was a bit troubled. His achievements in medicine, besides his own ability, were inseparable from Qin Ruyan’s financial support. Occasionally, when he encountered an insurmountable bottleneck, it was Qin Ruyan who pointed out the problem.

He deeply realized that if Qin Ruyan was willing, her achievements in medicine could surpass his by a mile.

But she never cared about these things. When asked, she simply said she didn’t know.

“Xiao Yan’er, the 150 million you transferred last time, I’ve almost used it up. How can this research be so expensive?”

Qin Ruyan picked up the cup beside her and took a sip. Her hair was loose, her slender white fingers held the cup, and she sipped the water slowly. Her other hand was tapping on her phone, her eyelashes drooping, revealing no emotion, and a hint of displeasure lingered around her.

“I’ll transfer another 50 million to you tomorrow.”

She narrowed her eyes, thinking about the balance in her account. She had transferred almost a billion to Cheng Yubai in total, and almost all the money she earned from competitions and taking orders had been used for his research.

Developing a new drug in medicine requires an investment of at least seven figures, but most of these drugs are included in national medical insurance. Despite all this investment and development, she hadn’t even earned back a fraction of it.

But her parents’ research on drugs had no leads even when they died unexpectedly. She originally didn’t plan to continue, the investment was too huge. But later, she learned that she had some minor health issues.

Cheng Yubai returned to Beijing because of her, and her parents also died because of her. She looked at her hands. Apart from the occasional fainting and high fever two years ago, she hadn’t experienced any other symptoms, but Cheng Yubai’s blood test did show some abnormalities.

She also needed to take sleeping pills regularly to fall asleep.

After returning to China, she unexpectedly met Lu Jingchen. She didn’t want to have much interaction with him, but she accidentally discovered at the Hangzhou hotel that she could sleep well without sleeping pills when she was with him.

So they ended up together.

She admitted that at first, she treated him as “sleeping pills,” but now, she wasn’t sure anymore. It seemed like she was slowly falling for him.

She opened her banking app and checked her balance. Lu Jingchen had transferred another 100 million yuan to her.

She realized that whenever she transferred money from the 100 million yuan card he gave her, he would immediately replenish it. He probably guessed she needed funds, but he never asked, trusting her unconditionally.

Qin Ruyan’s grip on the cup tightened.

When Lu Jingchen returned home, Qin Ruyan had already composed herself. She was in the kitchen cooking.

Lu Jingchen walked in and took a look. There were two cakes on the counter, a stir-fried green pepper with egg, a salt-baked shrimp, a sweet and sour pork ribs, and a soup simmering in the pot.

He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“Just you and me for dinner, and you prepared so much?”

Qin Ruyan hummed, “Birthdays only come once a year, so we have to celebrate properly. I was planning to do it tomorrow, but I thought about it and wanted to be the first to say happy birthday to you after midnight.”

He chuckled softly, “Then it seems I’ll have to stay up late tonight.”

Qin Ruyan nodded, “After dinner, we’ll have some time, we can watch a movie. I picked out a few films, you can take a look and see which one you want to watch.”

Lu Jingchen smiled, “The staying up late I’m talking about has another meaning, don’t you understand, Mrs. Lu?”

Qin Ruyan froze for a moment, as if remembering something. She lowered her head and looked at his hand in front of her.

“Oh, can you go out first? You’re interrupting my cooking.”

Lu Jingchen leaned over and kissed her cheek, readily letting go of her.

“I’ll tidy up the table first, then come in and serve the dishes.”

Qin Ruyan nodded. He went out, and soon came back in, carrying the already prepared dishes. He then took out his phone and ordered her a hot milk tea.

Ten minutes later, Qin Ruyan came out with the last soup.

After they got together, Lu Jingchen cooked most of the time. He wouldn’t let her enter the kitchen, except for today.

He leisurely picked up a piece of sweet and sour pork ribs, ate it slowly, and only spoke after swallowing.

“From now on, Mrs. Lu, you can only cook once a year, just for today. The kitchen is still mine for the rest of the time.”

He picked up the cup beside him and took a sip of water. Qin Ruyan hummed in response. She didn’t like cooking much either.

He picked some food for her and ladled a bowl of soup. “Eat more, you’re too thin.”

He had a smile in his eyes, Qin Ruyan didn’t say anything, she lowered her head and took two sips of soup.

The phone she had placed beside her lit up. She picked it up and took a look, her eyes widening.

BL: Do you want to take a job, Lu Jingchen from Beijing placed the order, 50 million yuan.

Qin Ruyan only glanced at it before turning off the phone. She ignored it. She was always good at hiding her emotions, but Lu Jingchen could tell.

“What’s wrong?”

Qin Ruyan raised her head, nonchalantly humming, “Spam message, nothing.”

Lu Jingchen didn’t ask further. He picked up another piece of meat for her, “Eat more, you’re too thin.”

Qin Ruyan nodded. They ate in relative silence.

Two minutes later, the doorbell rang. Qin Ruyan looked at him, “Someone’s coming at this time?”

He smiled, stood up and walked towards the door, explaining, “It must be the milk tea I ordered for Mrs. Lu.”

Qin Ruyan hummed, lowered her head and took another bite of food, then raised her head in disbelief. What did he just say? He ordered her milk tea?

Qin Ruyan immediately put down her chopsticks, her eyes fixed on the milk tea he was holding.
