Saving the Cannon Fodder’s Self-Destructive Daily Life
Saving the Cannon Fodder’s Self-Destructive Daily Life | Chapter 21

Xia Ruan was a bit surprised: “Fang Yinan is going to join the cheerleading team? Since when did the female protagonist become so cliché?”

Fan Shujuan nodded: “Yeah, because this basketball game is a competition between classes, so each class organizes its own cheerleading team.”

Xia Ruan nodded in understanding, then casually said, “If she wants to, then let her. I’m not interested in this right now.”

Fan Shujuan saw that she really didn’t care and thought for a moment before reminding her, “I think you should still check the messages in the group.”

“Then you help me keep an eye on the teacher,” Xia Ruan said, lowering her head to look at her phone.

She had muted the class group messages a long time ago, but now when she opened it, there were already hundreds of messages. She skimmed through and saw everyone strongly recommending Fang Yinan to be the captain of their class cheerleading squad. Someone joked, “When the time comes, Fang Yinan will win them over with her looks alone, no need to say a word.” The comments below echoed this, as if everyone had forgotten their class cheerleading team actually has a captain.

Xia Ruan kept scrolling down. The first person to mention that she was the cheerleading captain was Fan Shujuan, but soon the message was drowned out by later replies. Seeing this, Xia Ruan couldn’t help shaking her head—should she say the female protagonist was just too popular, or that she herself was just too unpopular?

The more she scrolled; the more surprised Xia Ruan was that Lu Yan actually commented. She could understand Lu Yanzhi standing up for her because he was there to have fun with her. But Lu Yan speaking up about such a trivial matter really surprised her: “Have you all selectively forgotten that the cheerleading squad has a captain?”

Fan Shujuan noticed Xia Ruan zoning out and leaned in to whisper: “Lu Yan is standing up for you!”

Xia Ruan looked up at the back of someone’s head in front and said righteously: “He’s not standing up for me, he’s just representing justice.”

Fan Shujuan laughed at her tone: “Think what you want, but everyone believes Lu Yan is sticking up for you.”

Xia Ruan was about to exit the group chat when she saw Fang Yinan’s apology: “Sorry, I was busy practicing problems earlier, didn’t expect so much would happen later.” She also tagged Xia Ruan in the message. Unfortunately, Xia Ruan had muted notifications and only saw it now.

Fang Yinan truly didn’t expect things to turn out like this. She had asked a question in the class group then went back to practicing problems, planning to check their replies before sleep. She tagged Xia Ruan but got no response. She also privately added Xia Ruan but still got no reply. So when she arrived in the classroom the next morning, she apologized directly: “Xia Ruan, I’m sorry about what happened in the group last night.”

Xia Ruan looked completely unconcerned as she said, “This has nothing to do with you. Besides, what they said made sense. I really have been neglecting cheerleading lately, so I haven’t been a very competent captain. If you’re willing to join, that would actually be great.”

Seeing her sincere attitude, Fang Yinan relaxed: “Then I hope we get along well.”

Xia Ruan glanced at the hand Fang Yinan stretched out and quickly reached out her right hand to shake it. Hmm, hopefully she could get some of the female protagonist’s good luck.

The onlookers had thought it would turn into a dramatic confrontation, but to their surprise, the issue was settled in just a few words. Even Lu Yan, who had stood up for Xia Ruan the night before, didn’t get a chance to appear today. Everyone felt a bit disappointed.

After Fang Yinan left, Fan Shujuan glanced at Xia Ruan, who was still buried in her book: “You’re really not angry?” Xia Ruan was really hard to figure out these days. In the past, or with anyone else, they would have been angry about this, but Xia Ruan seemed as if nothing had happened.

Xia Ruan truly wasn’t angry, because she didn’t care. Naturally, she didn’t feel upset. In fact, she was happy someone was helping her complete a task. Seeing the confused look on Fan Shujuan’s face, Xia Ruan smiled and explained, “Just thinking about having to shout ‘Go team!’ in the gym makes me feel awkward. If someone else does it for me, of course I’m happy.”

“Didn’t you used to enjoy doing these kinds of things?” Fan Shujuan asked. She wasn’t that close to Xia Ruan before, but she still knew that Xia Ruan had always liked being in the spotlight.

Xia Ruan curved her lips into a smile. “You said it yourself—used to.”

Fan Shujuan didn’t ask more. Everyone has times they want to change, and it’s never too late as long as they want to.

After class, Lu Jizhou, as the sports rep, came to find Xia Ruan, the cheerleading captain: “Hey, Xia Ruan, remember to have the cheerleading team practice more. Our class might be in the first game.” After all, his luck with drawing lots wasn’t very good. Xia Ruan gave him an OK gesture to reassure him.

Xia Fei found out about what happened in the group chat only at lunchtime and looked at Xia Ruan with some complaint: “Ruan Ruan, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I only found out this morning. Besides, it’s not a big deal,” Xia Ruan said casually.

“How is it not a big deal?” This was basically her being isolated. Xia Fei glanced at the unbothered Xia Ruan across from him and suddenly felt a little disheartened. Ruan Ruan didn’t seem to need him for anything anymore. For a moment, he actually felt a little down.

After swallowing her food, Xia Ruan seriously said to Xia Fei: “Brother, you know I need to focus on studying now. This stuff isn’t important to me. Besides, Fang Yinan being captain is good too—she’ll just kill them with her looks.”

Whether it was for class pride or because of Fang Yinan, Xia Fei hesitated a bit but eventually nodded in agreement with Xia Ruan.

Xia Ruan couldn’t help but chuckle. Men really are unreliable creatures.

Because of Lu Jizhou’s reminder, after school Xia Ruan gathered the cheerleading team members. Everyone guessed she was planning to settle scores later, since last night before Lu Yan spoke up they had all been playing dead.

Xia Ruan didn’t know what they were thinking. She specially went to Fang Yinan’s seat to invite her.

After Xia Ruan left, Yang Xiaomi looked a little worried and said, “Nan Nan, do you think Xia Ruan will try to make things difficult for you?”

Fang Yinan looked at her in surprise: “Why would you think that?”

Yang Xiaomi swallowed nervously and roughly recounted Xia Ruan’s past deeds. Fang Yinan furrowed her brow lightly and said, “Xiaomi, we can’t always judge people based on how they used to be. At least, I didn’t see any of the issues you mentioned in Xia Ruan just now.”

Yang Xiaomi thought for a moment. It did seem Xia Ruan had changed a lot recently, but who could say how long that change would last?

Seeing her deep in thought, Fang Yinan reached out and patted her shoulder, “I know you’re worried about me. Don’t worry, I’m not some soft target anyone can easily manipulate.”

Yang Xiaomi nodded in response, “No matter what, it’s always better to be cautious.”

The other cheerleading team members, seeing Fang Yinan standing beside Xia Ruan, basically shared Yang Xiaomi’s thoughts. The way they looked at Fang Yinan carried a trace of sympathy.

Xia Ruan was completely unaware of their wary gazes. She was asking Fang Yinan if he had any previous cheerleading experience. Fang Yinan nodded; he had been the captain of the cheerleading team in middle school, otherwise she wouldn’t have casually asked such questions in the group chat.

Hearing that, Xia Ruan raised the corner of her lips, “Then why don’t you try coordinating with them first?”

Fang Yinan wasn’t quite sure what she meant but still nodded.

After a short time communicating with them, Fang Yinan gave Xia Ruan an OK sign. Xia Ruan asked them to practice once, and sure enough, their movements were neat and synchronized.

Xia Ruan quickly made a decision: “Alright, let’s go with this. For the next few days, everyone come practice a few rounds after school.”

Then what about her? Was she not planning to perform? Just as Xia Ruan was about to leave, someone in the crowd finally voiced everyone’s thoughts: “What about you? Aren’t you joining?”

Xia Ruan cheerfully looked at them, “You’re cheering for the basketball team, and as the captain, I’m cheering for you.”

Fang Yinan frowned slightly and walked up to her. “Xia Ruan, if you’re doing this because of me, I can drop out.”

Xia Ruan looked at her calmly, “You’re overthinking it. Even without you, I don’t plan to participate.”

Fang Yinan glanced up at her, seeing her expression unchanged, and her frown slowly eased. “Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”

Xia Ruan smiled slightly, “No need to thank me. You earned it yourself.”

After Xia Ruan left, the others gathered around Fang Yinan, upset on her behalf. “Xia Ruan definitely did this on purpose, to mess with you.” This only fueled the rumor that Fang Yinan had stolen the cheerleading captain spot from her.

Fang Yinan tried to calm them down in a soft voice. “Why think so badly of her? She just doesn’t want to participate, that’s all. Don’t overthink it.”

Despite Fang Yinan’s comfort, everyone still believed Xia Ruan was being deliberate. They even comforted Fang Yinan, saying if anyone spread rumors in the future, they could prove it was Xia Ruan who didn’t want to join. This made Fang Yinan feel both amused and a little touched.

Xia Ruan, on the other hand, had no idea that her actions were being so misinterpreted. But even if she did, she wouldn’t care. After all, she wasn’t living her life based on their opinions.

Facing Lu Yanzhi blocking her way, Xia Ruan raised an eyebrow, “What’s up?”

“Can we talk?” Lu Yanzhi looked sincere. Regardless of his initial reasons for transferring schools, after being in the same class with Xia Ruan in Ming’an, he felt she was different from what he imagined. He hoped to clear the misunderstanding between them.

“I don’t think we have anything to talk about.” Xia Ruan spoke honestly. Besides their connection through her grandfather and Lu’s old man, they really didn’t know each other well.

“I thought we were friends?” Honestly, every time Xia Ruan ignored and rejected him, Lu Yanzhi felt a bit hurt.

“Seriously? Besides being in the same class, how many times have we met? Besides knowing each other’s names, I don’t think we’re close at all,” Xia Ruan said seriously.

Lu Yanzhi remembered the rumors he heard before coming here. Looking at the distant expression on the girl in front of him, he spoke, “The reason you’re so resistant to getting along with me—is it because you like Lu Yan?”

Someone just pushing through the crowd overheard Lu Yanzhi’s words and stopped in their tracks.
