Chapter 15: Yan Xiaoyue, Rest in Peace!
“Mom and Dad, don’t worry, we’ll be quick.”
Yan Xiaoyue comforted the two elderly people. They were about the same age as her grandfather, and having raised their children by hand, they were truly afraid of never seeing him happy and content again.
“Good, good. Let’s strive to have a grandchild next year.” Old Man Jin patted Jin Chao on the shoulder, his face full of relief.
Tears welled up in Old Woman Jin’s eyes. “Originally, I thought…”
“Old woman, it’s fine as long as the children are alright. Let’s not bring up sad things.”
Yan Xiaoyue blinked. Could it be that they were hinting that Jin Chao was infertile?
“Mom and Dad, don’t just talk, eat quickly.”
Yan Xiaoyue quickly put several pieces of meat into their bowls. Seeing the pile of meat, the two of them started eating again.
Yan Xiaoyue suddenly felt a little awkward. She blurted out, “Mom and Dad, don’t cry either. Your grandson will take care of you in the future.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the two elders cried even harder, almost gasping for breath.
Jin Chao glared at her, patted their chests, and they finally recovered.
Yan Xiaoyue instantly understood. It seemed that these two old folks weren’t completely unaware.
Yesterday’s hasty burial meant no one saw Jin Qingyang’s body. Some even suggested searching downstream, but Qi Lan directly refused.
She didn’t know whether the two elders only knew about it or were involved.
If they were involved, things would be difficult.
In the warm room, watching the flushed faces of the elderly, their eyes flashing with an unknown emotion, she pretended not to see and continued to help them serve food as they neared the end of their meal.
“Enough, Xiaoyue, your father and I can’t eat much. I’ll take this back for Xiaoshuǐ to eat.”
Old Man Jin packed the meat from his bowl and his wife’s bowl. She felt displeased; she genuinely disliked that child.
“Okay, take more.” She realized she was too kind-hearted. Seeing their trembling, stooped bodies, she couldn’t help but give them more food.
She even scooped all the remaining dishes into their bowls.
Jin Chao remained silent throughout. Yan Xiaoyue personally sent the two elders home.
When she returned, Jin Chao had already cleaned up the main room and was writing something in a notebook.
“Yan Xiaoyue, this is the money you spent today. I’ll give you twenty yuan a month for food.”
The stack of tickets and money Jin Chao gave her today added up to roughly that amount.
“Keep the money and tickets I gave you today to buy new things. I don’t usually stay home, and we lack many things. Get whatever you need.”
Jin Chao paused, then explained, “I’m not saying you spend too much. It’s fine if we eat less, just the two of us. We don’t need to worry about unrelated people.”
Hearing this, she felt like Jin Chao was saying his parents were unrelated people.
Perhaps she was overthinking, but she felt things weren’t as simple as they seemed.
“Jin Chao, what did you just call me?”
Yan Xiaoyue’s thoughts were a little muddled, but she noticed Jin Chao had called her incorrectly.
“Yan Xiaoyue, what else would you be called?”
A mocking smile played on Jin Chao’s lips, making her heart feel heavy.
A bad memory suddenly surfaced – the memories of the original owner, who had been reborn. It seemed that Jin Qingyang had mocked her in this way.
Yan Xiaoyue’s eyes filled with hatred as she stared at Jin Chao, her voice filled with rage. “Jin Chao, your entire Jin family deserves to die! You promised it would be you, why did you switch to Jin Qingyang?”
“You made me suffer a wrongful accusation! Do you know that your parents aren’t genuinely good to you? You…”
Before she could say anything else, Jin Chao covered her mouth. His eyes flashed with a terrifying light, as if he would devour her alive.
“Don’t want to die, then shut your mouth.”
Jin Chao’s vicious words echoed in her ear. Her heart trembled, and goosebumps erupted all over her body. It was so cold, like a messenger from the eighteenth level of hell.
“Jin Chao, if you kill me, I will follow you for the rest of my life.”
Yan Xiaoyue was afraid, but she had to resist. Only by resisting this once would this man stop underestimating her.
“I thought you were a cat, but you’re a rabbit that bites.”
Jin Chao laughed, releasing his hand. “Fine. I earn eighty yuan a month, and I’ll give you half for household expenses. If you want to do something, write a proposal. I need to see if it’s worth my investment.”
He turned around, then stopped and turned back. “I’ll sleep on the plank bed; you sleep on the bed.”
Yan Xiaoyue remembered there was a plank bed in the house, supposedly the coffin plank used when Jin Chao’s grandmother passed away.
After Jin Chao closed the door, she sat down, picked up the cup of water, and drank it down in large gulps.
She had initially thought it was just a period drama; now it seemed everyone involved was complex, and she had been naive.
And her elder sister, Yan Zhitáo. If she was simple, such a bright person, even with the protagonist’s halo, wouldn’t have been able to create a business empire with a simple mind.
She hadn’t misheard; Jin Chao called her “Blind Xiaoyue”…
She crouched down, wanting to be alone, went to the kitchen, closed the door, and took the opportunity to enter her space.
She hadn’t had time to check on her space all day. Now that she was here, she truly felt a sense of time passing.
Only in this small courtyard, which belonged solely to her, could she find such peace.
Just now, she felt she had been too influenced by the original owner, and it seemed as though the original owner had been seizing opportunities to reclaim control of her body.
“Yan Xiaoyue, if you’re here and want to take back this body, I’ll give it to you. If you’re not, then this body is mine.”
She spoke to the air. Something seemed to drift in the air, a black shadow and a white shadow passed by, and the air returned to calm.
Yan Xiaoyue sighed. She wanted to live, and since this body suited her well, it was hers.
She clasped her hands together, bowed to the air, “Yan Xiaoyue, rest in peace!”
The black and white shadows were the Black and White Impermanence. She had intentionally called the original owner out, and now the original owner had been taken away!
Well, with this body, Yan Xiaoyue wouldn’t be able to snatch it away from her.
If she didn’t think of a solution, she might go mad and try to seize the body again.
She knew that her questioning of Jin Chao and her hatred towards him were all the influence of the original owner.
Since she couldn’t bear it, she couldn’t blame her for being ruthless.
From now on, every Qingming Festival, she would burn paper money for the original owner – rest in peace, never to meet again.
Thank you, thank you!
