Chapter 15
“So, who is your type?”
Gu Jingcheng gave her a sideways glance and refused to answer.
“Hard to say?” Jiang Yehui thought of Lu Mingming in her heart, but didn’t say it out loud.
Gu Jingcheng merely said blandly,
“I’m a picky eater.”
Jiang Yehui was unimpressed.
“Being picky doesn’t mean you don’t eat. A picky eater might go crazy once they find something that suits their taste.”
“Is that so?”
Gu Jingcheng actually paused to think about it. He glanced at a half-eaten plate of steamed grouper on the table, and his expression grew a little complicated.
“So,” Jiang Yehui pressed on, unwilling to back down,
“is there or isn’t there something going on between you and Yu Jiayun?”
Gu Jingcheng looked up.
“She’s an artist under my company. Nothing more.”
They stared each other down.
Seeing that he still refused to admit it, Jiang Yehui’s stubbornness flared up too.
Her face turned cold.
“The second day after our wedding, did you or did you not meet with Yu Jiayun in your office?”
“I did.” Gu Jingcheng answered without hesitation.
“She asked you to pull strings so she could win Best Actress at the Golden Deer Awards, didn’t she?”
Gu Jingcheng’s eyes flashed as he nodded, “Correct.”
Ha! Jiang Yehui pressed further, “On October 8th, did Yu Jiayun fly to London on the same plane as you? Your—private jet.”
Gu Jingcheng seemed to think for a moment before replying, “Yes, it was on the way.”
In reality, Yu Jiayun had missed her scheduled flight that day. Her agent found out that the boss was also flying to London and asked Assistant Jin to help get them a ride.
Naturally, Jiang Yehui didn’t know any of this. She smiled.
“So many people in the world—why just her? And you two even had rumors before. Don’t you avoid suspicion?”
Gu Jingcheng frowned slightly, gazing at her rarely tense little face.
“You mind?”
Jiang Yehui spread her hands, the corners of her mouth curling in a perfunctory smile.
“Of course not.”
Gu Jingcheng gave her a searching look, then said seriously,
“It won’t happen again.”
Jiang Yehui arched her brow, sarcasm flashing in her eyes.
“What won’t happen again? Cheating?”
Gu Jingcheng frowned and replied clearly,
“Giving a woman a lift.”
Still pretending? Fine, don’t blame her for playing her trump card!
Jiang Yehui hadn’t intended to be the one to bring up Yu Jiayun’s pregnancy. But with the stalemate continuing and him refusing to admit anything, she pulled out her phone and started playing the recording.
Gu Jingcheng hadn’t expected this and raised his eyebrows slightly in surprise.
Jiang Yehui watched him openly, waiting for him to finally slip up.
Gu Jingcheng’s lips curled faintly as he cooperatively lowered his gaze and listened.
During the recording, Gu Jingcheng only blinked slightly when Yu Jiayun admitted she was pregnant, as if mildly surprised—but he didn’t look shocked at all.
Jiang Yehui couldn’t help but be impressed.
So calm. He’s really something.
Once the recording ended, she asked with confidence,
“Well, what’s your take?”
Gu Jingcheng paused thoughtfully and analyzed objectively,
“If you sell it to a small tabloid, you’ll get maybe a million. But if you sell it to Yu Jiayun, she might pay ten or twenty million.”
Jiang Yehui smirked,
“What if I sell it to you, Mr. Gu?”
Gu Jingcheng gave a half-smile,
“Which Mr. Gu?”
“Take a guess.”
Gu Jingcheng chuckled lightly, calm and composed.
“Yu Jiayun is Gu Siming’s mistress.”
“…Who’s Gu Siming?”
“My third uncle.”
“Oh.”
Jiang Yehui didn’t believe it one bit—she even felt like applauding.
In such a short time, he’d already found someone to take the fall?
She didn’t know the Gu family deeply, but she was familiar with that uncle. Compared to the deceased eldest brother and the ambitious second brother, the third uncle was quite mediocre. Still, with the family name behind him, he lived comfortably and relied on Gu Jingcheng now more than ever, so he naturally followed him blindly.
Seeing that she wasn’t buying it, Gu Jingcheng looked both annoyed and helpless. He stood and grabbed his suit jacket, took out his phone, and sat back down.
With one hand, he quickly tapped the screen, then placed the phone in the center of the table. The call was already ringing.
After two rings, a man’s voice came through clearly, a bit puzzled:
“Jingcheng? What a surprise—what’s the occasion?”
Gu Jingcheng’s dark eyes locked onto Jiang Yehui’s face, the corner of his lips tugging.
“Uncle, congratulations—you’re going to be a father again.”
“Huh? Wh-what do you mean?”
“You’ve got ten seconds to explain to my wife your relationship with a certain artist under Mingji.”
His voice was slow, but each word carried weight.
“Wh-what… What relationship?” the man stammered.
Gu Jingcheng’s mouth curled in a cold smile, eyes still on Jiang Yehui’s face.
“Ten, nine, eight…”
“Okay, okay! I’ll explain. Ahem… Xiaoye, I was indeed… um… with Yu… Jia…”
The man suddenly seemed to realize something.
“Yu Jiayun… She’s pregnant???”
Jiang Yehui’s heart sank. She instinctively avoided Gu Jingcheng’s gaze and reached out to end the call.
Right now, her heart felt parched—like walking through a desert only to spot a bottle of water in the distance. Joy filled her chest, but when she finally reached for it… it turned out to be empty.
She swallowed dryly, sat up straight, and placed both hands on the table.
“Fine. Let’s say Yu Jiayun really has nothing to do with you. We’ve been married for three months and six days. Can you prove that, during this time, you didn’t touch another woman?”
Gu Jingcheng frowned and glanced at her.
“I can’t prove it.”
“Oh?” Jiang Yehui laughed,
“Then I have every reason to suspect you cheated.”
“That’s twisting logic.”
“I’ve been abroad this entire time. You didn’t even come with me for our honeymoon. Am I not supposed to be suspicious?”
Gu Jingcheng looked at her, a complex expression in his eyes.
“Do you want me to have cheated?”
“Of course not!” Jiang Yehui said righteously.
“I told you—I’m a clean freak. I can’t accept my husband being touched by someone else.”
“I haven’t.”
“Proof?”
Gu Jingcheng’s expression darkened. After hesitating for a long while, he rubbed his forehead and finally muttered with difficulty:
“That time with you… was my first.”
“…Cough.”
Jiang Yehui was stunned.
Twenty-eight years old, the head of a conglomerate, constantly surrounded by glamorous women, even rumored in the tabloids—and he’s a virgin???
She felt like her intelligence had just been insulted.
“And how exactly do you prove you’re a virgin?”
Gu Jingcheng’s dark eyes locked onto hers, his jaw tense.
“Why should I have to?”
Jiang Yehui wasn’t about to back down. Their gazes clashed head-on.
They stared for five or six seconds—sparks practically flying.
Finally, Jiang Yehui lost her nerve and attempted a last feeble jab:
“You… you’re not unable, are you?”
Gu Jingcheng’s face instantly turned black. He took a deep breath and stood abruptly.
“Auntie Xie!” he called.
Three seconds later, Auntie Xie came rushing from her room, confused.
“Yes, sir?”
Jiang Yehui sneaked a peek at Gu Jingcheng’s ears—which were now bright red—and immediately stared at her own lap, pretending nothing happened. Not a word more.
“Escort Madam back to get her luggage!”
After saying this with extreme restraint, Gu Jingcheng didn’t even look at Jiang Yehui and strode out of the dining room. Heavy footsteps echoed up the stairs right after.
Auntie Xie glanced uneasily at Jiang Yehui, puzzled. Sir is usually so composed—everything was fine just now, why did he suddenly lose his temper?
Jiang Yehui forced a smile and patted her chest, feeling utterly disheartened.
Sigh… The road is long, and the revolution has yet to succeed.
Just then, the doorbell buzzed.
Auntie Xie let out a puzzled “Hmm?” and muttered, “Who could it be at this hour?”
Jiang Yehui stood up and offered, “I’ll get it.”
She walked over, turned on the monitor—and the moment she saw the visitor’s face, her heart sank even further.
She forced herself to calm her thoroughly shaken nerves, took a breath, lifted the corners of her mouth into a sweet smile, and said,
“Mom, you’re here!”
“Xiaoye, I heard you were back, so I came to see you.”
Madam Gu’s face appeared on the screen—elegant as always, with a kind and dignified expression.
Jiang Yehui kept smiling stiffly as she pressed the unlock button.
Her mother-in-law appeared slightly travel-worn, followed by a driver carrying several large shopping bags.
Jiang Yehui couldn’t help but ask in surprise,
“Mom, weren’t you in Malaysia? How did you come back so soon?”
“I’ve been there a few times already, nothing much to do this time—just visited a friend. When I heard you were returning today, I immediately asked someone to book a flight. I haven’t even gone home yet, came straight here.”
She pointed to the bags the driver was holding.
“The bird’s nest over there is top-quality—great for women’s health. I specially bought it from a reputable old shop for you.”
Jiang Yehui looked at the year’s worth of supply and smiled with curved eyes,
“Thank you, Mom!”
She sweetly took her arm and led her into the living room.
“Auntie Xie, take care of these. Have Aunt Lan make a nourishing soup for Madam every other day,” Madam Gu instructed.
“Yes, Madam.” Auntie Xie quickly told the driver to take the bags to the kitchen and had Aunt Lan store them properly.
“Eh? Where’s Jingcheng?” Madam Gu finally asked about her son.
Jiang Yehui smiled politely,
“He just finished dinner and went upstairs.”
…Though he had likely stormed off because of her.
At that moment, Auntie Xie approached and asked,
“Madam, which items do you need? I can go and fetch them for you.”
“Oh…” Jiang Yehui pretended to hesitate and glanced at her mother-in-law, frowning slightly.
“It’s hard to explain clearly. How about I go with you?”
Madam Gu was puzzled.
“Where are you going?”
Auntie Xie replied,
“Sir just told me to help Madam pack her things.”
“Her things?” Madam Gu looked at Jiang Yehui in confusion. Why weren’t her belongings already here?
“Oh,” Jiang Yehui explained with a smile,
“There are some items I left at the Zhongjing apartment before the wedding that I need now. I just want to bring them here.”
“Makes sense,” Madam Gu nodded.
“This is your home now. Auntie Xie might not be able to carry everything—Xiao Chen, go with them.” She gestured to the driver.
Just as Jiang Yehui was about to speak, her mother-in-law added,
“Xiaoye, just tell Auntie Xie what you need. She’s worked for the Gu family for over ten years—experienced and detail-oriented. I specifically transferred her here to help you. You can trust her to take care of the household.”
Jiang Yehui had initially planned to go herself and find an excuse not to return. But now that her mother-in-law had said this, insisting on going would not only contradict her but also suggest distrust—especially with Auntie Xie right there.
So she smiled sweetly and said,
“No wonder Auntie Xie is so capable—you snatched her from your side! I’m really lucky!”
The compliment flattered both women, and they beamed in response.
Once Jiang Yehui explained which items to collect, Auntie Xie and Xiao Chen left.
“Come,” Madam Gu took her hand,
“It’s been over two months—let me take a good look at you.”
Jiang Yehui smiled softly and sat beside her.
“You’ve lost a bit of weight.”
“Jingcheng said I’ve gotten darker. He even mocked me.”
Jiang Yehui pouted playfully.
“Don’t listen to him. You’re still beautiful,” Madam Gu chuckled.
“Come on, let’s go upstairs and take a look.”
They went upstairs together. In the master bedroom, Gu Jingcheng wasn’t there, but the bathroom door was shut.
Madam Gu chatted with Jiang Yehui as they looked around casually.
Not long after, the bathroom door opened. Gu Jingcheng stepped out, wearing only a towel around his waist. He first glanced at Jiang Yehui—smiling quietly—before greeting,
“Mom.”
His glance had made Jiang Yehui a little nervous. She had never seen a man’s upper body so directly before.
Wait no… she had seen nude models in her sketching classes before, but those were like plaster statues—totally emotionless. This… was different.
Especially with those wide shoulders, narrow waist, and defined chest—not exaggerated, just… perfect. And it was even more awkward seeing it in front of her mother-in-law. Her heart beat strangely, and her face flushed.
“You’re showering this early?” Madam Gu asked, glancing at her son, then at her blushing daughter-in-law.
After going upstairs, Gu Jingcheng had been stewing in frustration and vented in the gym before taking a shower.
He gave a small cough.
“I’m tired. Thought I’d rest early.”
“Oh,” Madam Gu misread the situation.
She thought, It’s been a while since the young couple saw each other. Of course he’d be full of energy… Isn’t absence supposed to make the heart grow fonder?
So she smiled knowingly and said,
“Then I won’t disturb you two. Xiaoye, you should shower and sleep early too.”
Jiang Yehui glanced at the clock—it was only 8:30 PM. Young people usually didn’t sleep that early…
Wait—does that mean she’s leaving?!
She let out a quiet sigh of relief and offered politely,
“Mom, are you tired? Why not stay here tonight?”
She hadn’t expected Madam Gu to seriously consider it for two seconds before replying cheerfully,
“That works too. I live out in the suburbs—this place is far from home. No point making the trip back. I’ll just stay here tonight.”
Uh…
Jiang Yehui immediately regretted that polite sentence she had just said. Why did I have to open my mouth?
Now what? What was she going to do tonight?
She sneaked a glance at Gu Jingcheng, who — whether intentionally or not — turned his head away.
Since she’d come upstairs, the two hadn’t even exchanged eye contact.
So, after a few more words, Madam Gu excused herself and — ever so thoughtfully — even closed the bedroom door behind them.
For a moment, the spacious room was left with just the husband and wife.
Jiang Yehui stood by the bed, feeling awkward whether she sat or stood. In the end, she perched on the edge of the mattress, barely sitting on a third of it. Her legs were neatly together, tilted to the side, back straight — elegant and proper, yet clearly ready to bolt at any moment.
Gu Jingcheng still looked calm on the surface. Without even glancing at her, he walked straight into the walk-in closet and randomly pulled on a white t-shirt from a neatly stacked pile.
Jiang Yehui figured he was still hung up on what she said earlier. After some hesitation, she looked up and said innocently,
“I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to say you were… you know… downstairs just now.”
She definitely meant to!
Gu Jingcheng whipped his head around and stared at her, a flare of anger suddenly rising again. He wanted to do something but clearly knew this wasn’t the right setting, so he just stiffly grabbed a pair of pants and walked out the door.
“Pfft!” Jiang Yehui burst into laughter — she had managed to piss him off again.
Not long after, some noise came from downstairs — Auntie Xie and Xiao Chen had returned.
From the sound of things, her mother-in-law had gone downstairs at some point and was now helping them bring things in.
Jiang Yehui went out to take a look — and was shocked.
How many things did they move?! Was she never going back?!
Other than sofas, furniture, and appliances that couldn’t be moved, every piece of clothing, every pair of shoes and hat, even blankets and little bedside decorations had been brought over.
And Madam Gu hadn’t been wrong — Auntie Xie was really good. Everything was packed perfectly, sorted meticulously. There was no fault to be found.
Auntie Xie looked energetic.
“Madam, is there anything we forgot? I can go get the rest.”
“No… no, this is great. Thank you so much.”
“Don’t mention it, Madam — this is my job.”
Jiang Yehui’s heart sank, but she still had to keep smiling on the surface.
Gu Jingcheng probably heard the commotion and strolled over holding a book.
Madam Gu looked at him, a bit puzzled.
“Didn’t you say you were tired? Why are you reading?”
“Just flipping through,” he said casually.
She assumed he was waiting for his wife and said warmly,
“Xiaoye, go ahead and rest. We’ll help Auntie Xie finish unpacking — just put everything in the guest room for now.”
“…Alright then.”
Under her mother-in-law’s gentle and expectant gaze, Jiang Yehui returned to the bedroom.
Gu Jingcheng hesitated a moment, then followed her in.
When the door closed, they were right back where they’d been fifteen minutes earlier.
Gu Jingcheng ignored her completely, got onto the bed, and leaned against the headboard to read.
Jiang Yehui sat at the foot of the bed and played with her phone — both keeping to their own spaces.
By 10 PM, Gu Jingcheng spoke mildly,
“Aren’t you going to shower?”
Jiang Yehui turned to look — his face was hidden behind the book, unreadable.
She pouted.
“No clothes.”
The room fell silent again. After about two minutes, Gu Jingcheng put down the book, slipped on his shoes, and walked out.
Five minutes later, he came back — holding two sets of pajamas and… a pair of pink underwear.
All hers.
Jiang Yehui’s heart lurched. She glared at him.
“Auntie Xie and Mom are still downstairs, aren’t they?”
“Yeah,” Gu Jingcheng replied as if it was the most natural thing, looking at her,
“I asked them to find it.”
Boom!
Jiang Yehui felt like she’d been struck by lightning. Her whole body flushed hot, her face burned, and she swore there was smoke rising from her head.
She swallowed hard, pointing a trembling finger at Gu Jingcheng.
“Y-You… how could you?!”
“How could I what?”
“That’s so embarrassing!” she stomped her foot angrily. She’d planned to quietly grab her things after they’d finished unpacking. Who knew he’d gone out just for this?!
“So what do you want me to do?” Gu Jingcheng replied coolly.
“Put it all back?”
He turned, clearly about to walk out.
“Gu—Jing—cheng!” Jiang Yehui stood up abruptly, hands on her hips.
“You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?!”
There was a flicker of amusement in Gu Jingcheng’s eyes, but when he turned around, his expression was calm again. He waved the clothes slightly and raised an eyebrow.
“Want them or not?”
“…Yes.”
Jiang Yehui pursed her lips and snatched the pajamas from his left hand.
“And this?”
He wiggled the pink underwear in his right hand.
Jiang Yehui grit her teeth inwardly, didn’t even look at him, and reached out — only for him to lift his hand slightly, just out of reach.
Jiang Yehui took a deep breath, squinted at him with a sweet smile,
“I promise I’ll never say you’re not ‘capable’ again!”
Gu Jingcheng gave her a dark smile, his voice low,
“Jiang Yehui… say that again?”
She seized the moment — snatched the pink underwear, and bolted for the bathroom.
